Aye, Grauniad reviews seem very high and miss. Definitely not something I'd use as my only source.
Although they have summed up my exact feeling with the franchise, so maybe it's a spot on review for a jaded old fucker like me.

It is far from perfection, but I am on my second watch. There are times when the production shines, others look quite cheap. The story is simple, but laying the foundations, But it is a solid start.

Good start to the series, feels very much like Rebels season 5. Could do without yet another MacGuffin with the map but hopefully that gets explained more fully at some point because it seems a bit strange that some old temple is going to have the directions to where Thrawn is, possibly a migratory map of the Purgil is the only thing that really makes any sense. Nice to see Clancy Brown as his Rebels character and Chopper still not giving a shit about potential casualties.

I’ve no background with the cartoons it comes from. Very bored by it so far, about 30 mins in.

Just finished watching Rebels last night. Decent series. Doesn't really have any major memorable stand-out moments like The Clone Wars but a great bunch of characters. All of which (almost) I expect to see in this.

I'll watch it tonight. The trailer contained a lot of moments that felt like (I hate the word) Star Wars tropes and imagery that was amazing the first time but lacks impact now.
I might be wrong but when you have Andor it's difficult to excuse it.

Good start. I loved Rebels, so seeing it transitioned to live action is great. I fully agree with the complaint of Whizzo. Chopper made me lol, so that's good 😊

I think it could have done with a bit less jet setting around - maybe start with the plot of the 2nd episode. Cast seems great.

Does watching Rebels first make a huge difference to enjoying A? Or is it more of a “you would benefit from it, but it’s not necessary”?

It's nice that there are always maps with directions to major characters in the star wars universe.

30 minutes in and there’s a lot of slow things happening and people talking very slowly, it’s like they have a target run time as the slowness isn’t creating tension. It’s very odd as when stuff does happen it’s alright.

Ashoka even blinks extra slowly.
Lots of characters just giving each other the side eye and folding their arms a lot.

This is Bobba levels of terrible acting and lots of awkward scenes of peps looking at each other. Hopefully the later episodes up their game in terms of tighter editing and pacing but so far it's following Filloni's general obsession of lore rather than actual characters/drama.
You just know the masked Sith merc is some random lore person.

Funny, knowing nothing about the background of any of this bar the Mando episode, I'd have said the mystery knight-helm guy was far more obvious...
But yeah, glacialy slow, ship CGI is great, sound great, fights standard fare, and the plot is pretty much all setup at the mo. I'll stick with for a few more, if only to pay respect to Ray.

Funny, I kind of like the slowness of it. Although I do hope interesting things start happening soon. Andor started slow as well and that turned out fine.

I was very interested in what was going on with Andor, and the pace was deliberate and it worked, the characters interesting and even the story seemed “important” in the context of Star Wars. It was politics, it was people, it was real.
Everything with Ashoka so far seems to rest on being pre-invested in the characters and whoever Thrawn is. I’m distracted by ancient magic balls in ancient magic temples leading to a guy who left a few years ago, and the unnatural movement of and creases in the big rubber hair of several characters. It’s magic guff, it’s cosplay, it’s not really grounded in anything. I’ll still watch it. It’s much better so far than Boba Fett and I watched that.

I will give Snyder one thing. He seems to have realised that the only way to get a Star Wars that has even a vague chance of being fun and interesting is to make your own.

I dont know about that but however it turns out, more happened in the trailer for that than pretty much the entirety of the star wars output for the last few years.
