Oh yeah. The weirdest part wasn't necessarily watching the playthrough, it was acting like he was playing the game. Stuff like "I've just got to the section with the scars, they're pretty difficult, any tips?" and so on.

The Dark Souls videos where the guy doesn't take any hits are pretty entertaining. There was terrific YT streamer who did Souls playthroughs Kay Plays, she was a Cryptologist or something not really a gamer, very analytical and I loved watching her play the games. But she just quit when she started to have PC problems and never returned, sad day in Gruf's world

According to the recent twitch hack where their payout lists got leaked, yeah, game streaming is very much a thing.

My YouTube category of sin is music theory and production. I could spend the time honing my own knowledge and skills... or I could veg out and watch some industry veterans complete a mix or whatever.
So yeah - much as I often don't "get it" for watching games vs. playing them... I kinda do.
Hell, given that I used to read and re-read and re-read and re-read games magazines as a young 'un because I didn't have the cash to buy many, and ended up playing games in my mind based on review screenshots, adverts, and wotnot... it's not hard to see how da yoof of today might watch people play for much the same reason.

Gogglebox? That’s awesome, one of my favourite TV programmes. It’s genuinely hilarious at times Agreed. I used to be of the "but why?" persuasion but I watched it and it's often genuinely brilliant and hilarious.

I'm with Ecosse. It baffles me. I am nearer 50 than 45 though, so I guess I'm not supposed to get it. It's probably because the only exposure I have to streamers are the wank stains that my son watches. Annoying cunts, every one of them. I'm with you, I didn't get it either. And I'm muuuuucchhh younger than you. I'm with you and I'm much older than you. /grumpy old bastard

I loved watching Aoife and Johnny during their Let's Play Dark Souls episodes, as, IMHO, they had real chemistry on-screen and were hilarious Other than that, every time I watch someone else play anything on YT, it's because I'm either stuck somewhere in a game or too tired to play myself; real life worries and all that jazz...

I'm on the fence. There are some YTers that I follow who play Apex legends, but then I watch them more for their skill than the game itself. If it's a narrative-based title I'd rather play it. I do check out the odd bits of playthroughs to get an idea if I'd like to play something, so they have worth in that sense.
But, there are a few games that my gf is interested in, that we don't think she'll enjoy playing. The solution is to watch me play them, so that she can get all the story and see the art and stuff, but without getting frustrated over controls or difficulty. Obviously she could just watch a playthrough, but doing it together means we can chat and stuff. Fundamentally the same thing though.

"Not getting streamers" is on the same level as "not getting music". There is such a vast variety available. Obviously the shouty young people rise to the top of the charts but if you know what you're looking for it's not as alien as you might think.

I get, but don’t enjoy, watching streamers playing games. I know there’s a lot to be learned from it - I think my understanding of the mechanics and metas of current games are deeply cut by not watching folks who know WTF they are doing - but at my age - at your age - I can’t handle the noise.
Which is a but fucking depressing. Having turned into your parents, not being able to tolerate an inferno racket.
/slippers
I will, however, watch the living fuck out of LetsGameItOut, which is just fantastic stuff. Thank you child, for finding that, and thank you creator for making videos which me and the daughter can watch and enjoy together. Thank you for showing her you don’t need to screech to get attention, and that doing things the opposite way from how you are supposed to can get rewarding and hilarious at the same time.

I used to be of the "but why?" persuasion but I watched it and it's often genuinely brilliant and hilarious. Gogglebox (the non-‘sleb version) is very well cast. It kind of goes without saying, but you watch that to see the amusing reactions and banter of the people in Gogglebox and don’t really care what they’re watching. I suppose I do understand those “reaction” videos where you get a bit of commentary about the experience, and obviously a proper decent video review of a game is informative. I just don’t get why my son wants to watch some berk play Fortnite when he might as well be playing Fortnite himself. (My son is good enough to get victory royales on his own, so it’s not like it’s out of any need to improve his skills.) I’ve concluded that 11 year olds just have a different viewpoint on what’s worthwhile entertainment. And I’m old and have turned into my own Dad.

People on gogglebox are just rude though. Talk about tv all you want, but save that shit until after the programme has finished, don't ruin what I'm watching with your dribblings.

Nah, I totally understand this and it sounds very familiar. Personally, I just want to read instructions. Same if I'm looking up how to fix something. I don't want to watch a 7 minute video to see you do a 4 second fix (yes, I know, you have to monetise etc. Yawn). Tbh, I barely use YouTube. Music videos, occasional skateboarding videos. That's it.

I think I spend a minimum of an hour a day on YT. Probably more. Gaming, fitness, tech stuff, mostly.

I used to be of the "but why?" persuasion but I watched it and it's often genuinely brilliant and hilarious. Same here. It's partly the relationships between the people and partly seeing them have the same reaction as you to some of the things they're watching.

I got about an hour and a bit into a 7hr + YouTube video of every Amiga game ever made last night. It’s amazing - just 10 seconds or so of a random part of the game with the title reduced to the emulation file name. I couldn’t switch it off!

Games streaming is just not for me, i do love watching long-form reviews of games on YouTube though.
If i play through a game and it affects me in anyway, the time i would have spent playing something else for the next week is usually spent watching 1+ hour video essays on it.
Maybe it's because i only really like single-player story-driven games, but i could watch someone do something amazingly skilled in a video game, and it's just like 'so what?'... but a deep analysis, exploring all the hidden context and themes - that's a bit of me.
I think what kicked it off was coming across a very good one on Pathalogic.

I kind of did the same with a Spectrum version of that, but only because in the first minute there were several games I'd completely forgotten were a part of my childhood. But after about ten minutes I just scrubbed through the rest looking for thumbnails.

I seen an old Bruce Lee game being played the other day and had flashbacks to the Amstrad version I played to death as a child.

There's a game that I've been trying to find for years now. It was Amiga or Win 95 and you played a samurai, moved from screen to screen, threw throwing stars at the bad guys. It started in a garden scene, outdoors at least.
Might start a "what the fuck was this game?" thread...

The gameplay was like Last Ninja, but the viewpoint wasn't isometric, it was flat. Each screen was static and highly detailed. The characters took up more of the screen than Last Ninja, and the main character was a samurai, with bent knees to hold himself low to the ground and the sword held flat. Game must have come out about '92-94.
I'm wondering if this was a demo of a game that didn't release. I've looked through lists and lists of games and never found anything that matches.

Top down or side scroller? Can you think of anything else about the gameplay?
