£6 a month! I'm sure I used to say I'd pay for the forum, but.... I pay for the Guardian, that's £5 a month. I should really read it sometime...

It's not that different to people discussing a game on here while they're playing it, is it? The Elden Ring thread will be full of people talking about it as they play through it and wanting to hear the reactions of others to the parts they enjoyed or didn't like
There's plenty of other reasons but that should be pretty easy to understand
To me there's quite a difference to opinions, reviews, YouTube video reviews etc. to help divide if a game is for you and sitting watching someone play through a game while trying to "entertain" with their comments. I'd rather just, you know, play the game. I'm aware that I'm an old twat and in the gaming minority but /shrug Have you never watched a film or tv series (or even played a game) with someone who hasn't experienced it before and enjoyed their reaction to it? You also have to factor in that younger people have grown up watching YT/Twitch and consume everything via video. I like watching Let's Plays by people who add knowledge about the games they're playing, like trivia, lore or development stuff

I enjoyed watching playthroughs of the Dark Souls games because they were too much hard work to play myself but I loved the worlds and the action. I got as far as the hunter before the big spider on Bloodborne (Rom?) before I nearly had a meltdown so enjoyed watching the rest of that game too.

I'm with Ecosse. It baffles me. I am nearer 50 than 45 though, so I guess I'm not supposed to get it. It's probably because the only exposure I have to streamers are the wank stains that my son watches. Annoying cunts, every one of them.

I don't get half the throw away shit people watch on TV to be honest. Soaps, game shows, etc. It's all pointless nonsense

I watch quite a bit of stuff on Twitch. I never watch TV or films these days, it's either YouTube or Twitch when I'm not playing games myself. I mainly watch for the streamer, and not necessarily the game they're playing. I like the interactivity. Watching TV seems so passive to me.
I'm subscribed to only one streamer, EpicNameBro. He's someone I've been a fan of since he did Dark Souls lore videos on YouTube.

I'm excited for Elden Ring. Nothing gets me more tingly than a fromsoft game. Apart from that I don't really get hyped up for anything. I still get excited for games I'm interested in but I really don't play that many and haven't got a 'back log' to speak of. There's games I haven't played that I plan to but as long as I'm enjoying what I'm playing now, it doesn't really matter what else there is. I can definitely see how having loads of games to play or work through would dull your enthusiasm for new games

I think the fact that games are just so disposable now compared to when we were younger.

This is a really good playthrough of Silent Hill 2 I recommend. He's really enthusiastic and informative, giving plenty of trivia and background to the game as he plays through it. No shouting, screaming or playing up his reactions. I've watched his Silent Hill playthroughs several times. I just find them entertaining, like watching a good TV series. He's also got similar playthroughs for 1, 3 and Origins (and plenty of other games)

I used to work with a guy who was formerly in the industry (he worked for Codemasters) and he basically said he just didn’t have time to play games any more due to kids and life etc, but he kept up with gaming via videos.
He’d watched walkthrough videos of the entirety of Horizon Zero Dawn for the story and talked about it really enthusiastically… I just thought… well if you had time to watch however many hours of that, why not just play it?
I guess I do have some sympathy- I have far less gaming time than I used to before I had kids, but I’ve never felt tempted to totally give up playing things myself like that.

Wasn’t there one guy on EG who kept posting as if he was playing a game but it turned out he was just watching a 30 odd hour let’s play of it? That was weird.

I suppose the weird bit is pretending to be playing them but maybe he just wanted to be involved in the conversation. I think modern games can be quite mentally demanding as well as taking up a lot of time. I can understand someone who really enjoys the medium just wanting to watch others deal with all the bollocks while they just enjoy the end result
If I had a sudden hankering for Final Fantasy, I'd probably be more inclined to half watch someone on YT playing it and fucking about with all the materia or espers or whatever than deal with all that myself and just enjoy the story and nostalgia

I've developed a little bit of enjoyment out of watching speed runs for certain games. Resident Evil in particular is quite a cool one to watch get smashed apart. It's a good thing to have on in the background sometimes.
Never been into full on Lets Play type stuff though.

Probably because watching it is much easier than playing it? You can switch off and enjoy the game's content without having to engage with it, and be entertained by the player as well. I personally wouldn't do it myself for games I haven't played, but I have watched some streams (like Outside Xtra) and they can be quite fun.

That’s awesome, one of my favourite TV programmes. It’s genuinely hilarious at times

I watch twitch more than regular TV these days. There's a few streamers I put on if they are online - Distortion2, Elajjaz, Outworld, Ashens. It's very entertaining when you stick around for a bit and learn the injokes (much like EG forum with mustard etc).
Those who don't understand why people watch others playing games, it's like watching sport on TV. You could play football but you are sat watching someone else kick the ball about. No different.
I love watching speed runs and play throughs of modded dark souls etc.

I get Ecosse's point, as it is kind of weird when viewed objectively. For me, it's as much about the content creators (for want of a less odious term!) as is the games themselves - there are some YouTubers whose commentary I enjoy a great deal, and I'd happily watch them play Pong, but there are others I wouldn't watch play my favourite game if you paid me to do so.
It's that, plus the facts that 1) I can't afford to buy every game I'd like to check out, and 2) I hate playing from the first-person perspective, but quite enjoy the worlds/lore/mechanics/etc. of FP games like Dishonored and BioShock.

Also worth pointing out, if it's not something you're into, you're probably just going off the most popular YT channels and streamers who are going to be the shouty twatty ones that kids love. There's some really good ones out there if you look around

Anyway, people enjoy it, great, I'd just always rather play a game I'm keen on than watching someone else play it, I always have a backlog so I'd never waste time watching someone play a game I've already finished when I could be playing a fresh, new game from my backlog. I used to think Youtube was wank as well and have came round despite my fuddyduddyness so maybe there's hope. Narrator : "There wasn't."

I watched former EG writer Ellie Gibson start Demon's Souls the other night, while Keza MacDonald got very comedically upset with her for not taking it seriously enough and playing it wrong. Was genuinely hilarious

See, I don't understand people being obsessed with their backlogs. It just seems like a constant source of stress for something that's suppose to be fun. The 52 games in 52 weeks thread is nuts. Just blitzing through games to meet some arbitrary quota. All gamers are fucking weird

I buy what I like the look of and I play through them at my leisure. Might not be the most fiscally prudent approach, but it hasn't caused me problems so far.

We have a few things we watch regularly on youtube, Sorted Food, Barry Lewis, Wattles and a couple of other Minecraft players, the rest is all people getting hurt filler/trailers/the odd bit of standup between games/programmes etc. When Mrs Hermit isn't around I'm also watching a State of Decay playthrough by Rhadamant on the hardest difficulty which is a lot of fun and something I'll never do. He almost got wiped in between starting the game and getting to the first base, it's mental.
As for twitch, I used to have it on for background noise/music while I work, now I only fire it up once a week or so to check the free shit Amazon give you for having a prime sub.

I've been watching some of the new players on FF14 - coming at it with fresh perspective, and as it's story I know so well, watching them figure out the clues, or interpret a scene in a way I hadn't (or hadn't considered), has been pretty interesting. If the host is charismatic or engaging enough, I can easily understand why some people hang around and follow a streamer.

I think that was from TLOU2, there was a quite a heated debate about various aspects of the game but one of the more vocal detractors wasn't actually playing it.
