Had a sneak look today at the old place. Red text for Premium only and Red text for commenters who have subscribed. Work the FOMO to the max EG. Felt very tacky and crass. Saddened me tbh

Peak EG for me was the Darkfall review by Ed Zitron, subsequent re-review by Kieron Gillen, and all the hilarity surrounding that. [Edit] just found it all via Google, shocked to discover it was 2009. Christ I feel old That was brilliant.

EG used to appeal to me as it kind of felt like it was something like GamesTM as a website rather than places like IGN which were like, those crappy official magazines that gave everything a 9/10 or an 8/10 if it was bad.
These days though there's not really much going on that's interesting in terms of features, the previews are rarely hands on impressions (in fairness not their fault), and the reviews often don't really tell you much about the game. Which leaves the news, which is usually reported later than every other site and filled with mostly twitter quotes.
I dunno, EG used to feel like it put more into each story/bit of news, but maybe that's just my memory tricking me. I feel like Emma did a decent job at least but she moved on, right?

It’s ridiculous how much time I’ve spent recently mulling over the decline of EG, and how sad it makes me feel. I agree with others, it felt like a grown up website, the writing was funny and there were some genuinely great articles.
Somewhere along the line they’ve lost the humour and have become a joyless shell of what they were. The modern thinking seems forced and in your face, and it irks me that I get the feeling that they’re preaching but that being “woke” doesn’t come naturally for them. The reviews seem to be deliberately obtuse and different, and think they are much more intelligent than they are.
The front page seems to have no identity. Stupid they should make a game about articles, mixed in with news stolen from elsewhere and fortinte skin updates.
I really need to move on, but like many others am old and set in my ways.
I also hate MrTom.

For my money, such as it is, Emma was by far and away the best thing about Eurogamer in recent times - she managed to infuse her work with a tangible sense of personality and fun, without coming across as an ill-disguised tryhard in the process. I was sorry to see her leave, and whatever she ends up doing next, I hope she keeps writing.
Other than that... hmm. I actually quite like Edwin's work, even though he's totally the Will Self of video game journalism (as someone else said at EG, which was both amusing and true). At least he has his own style and steadfastly refuses to change it! Besides, the comments sections under his reviews always raise a chuckle or two.
Speaking of reviews, I rate Chris Tapsell pretty highly for the most part; watching Zoe and Aoife play games together on the YouTube channel is also nice, albeit in small doses. Otherwise, that's pretty much it for me as far as positive stuff is concerned.
The one-two combo of Emma leaving and the whole forum debacle - not even the closure itself, so much as the way in which it was carried out - led to me deleting my EG bookmark and moving onto pastures new. (I didn't even need a third strike, so to speak, but the recent subscription model would certainly have fitted the bill!)
As others have said, sad times.
I dunno, EG used to feel like it put more into each story/bit of news, but maybe that's just my memory tricking me. I feel like Emma did a decent job at least but she moved on, right?

I feel quite sad about EG’s changing recently.
I agree that Emma Kent was a real star and it’s really sad to have lost her. The rest of the team seem nice and write well enough - Wes’ review of FIFA 22 was really well done - but I think they’ve lost that style and independent voice that they used to have.
Snake’s comment about the Rob Florence incident made me go back and read some of the articles around that. Sure, it’s a difficult incident and probably not one the site wants to revisit, but the writing in Rob’s original article tackling the issue of games journalists getting too close to PR and being swayed by freebies was great.
And Tom Bramwell’s explanation and response to the whole thing after the legal threats and all that was heartfelt, honest and really well judged.
It feels kind of ironic that after all that, EG’s news has turned into a press release regurgitation machine and we hear more and more about “influencers” rather than informed critical commentary. A part of me dies every time Tom writes another Fortnite skin article, although I can well believe they’re good for clicks and ad impressions.
I guess it’s natural when you get older to believe that it was all better in your day, but I do think we have to credit Tom Bramwell, Kristan Reed and many of the old guard for making the site what it was then.
Tl;dr
It’s all gone to shit, hasn’t it?

I really don't get the whole watching other people play video games thing, it's baffling to me (apart from some special things like to see how to get past something tricky or whatever).

Yeah it was a shame Emma moved on, I thought she brought fresh perspective.
On the News Cast she didn't get excited for the hyped big game releases. She just liked the select few games that she was actually playing, like she could see through the derivative nature of many games, and see the true game underneath.
When pushed by Wes about which upcoming releases she was excited about, I found it amusing that she stood her ground and said "nothing really". When a game journalist isn't interested in any upcoming releases it's surely a damning indictment of the industry. Maybe Emma realised gaming no longer interested her.

I rarely get excited about a new game. I'm interested, but I think excitement is a bit much. Actually, I can't remember the last time I got excited about anything.

Wes’ review of FIFA 22 was really well done True, but, in a FIFA style, you could almost change 21 to 22 and no one would notice. 'I like the game but FUT is disgusting' is going to be a difficult take to keep fresh every year.

I feel like there's an alternate universe version of EG where instead of most of the front page being short news articles consisting of twitter grabs and press regurgitation with the occasional review/preview, they dived head first into giving indies etc more coverage by giving them hands on previews and doing more industry features etc like edge.

Agreed, although I'm somewhat mystified as to how "morally bankrupt" ≠ "Avoid."
Wes’ review of FIFA 22 was really well done

It's not that different to people discussing a game on here while they're playing it, is it? The Elden Ring thread will be full of people talking about it as they play through it and wanting to hear the reactions of others to the parts they enjoyed or didn't like
There's plenty of other reasons but that should be pretty easy to understand

Yeah, I mean, really, come on. Youre reviewing the whole package and part of it encourages underage gambling.

I'm presently excited about Metroid Dread, which I've preordered without reading a review because I'm a moron. Actually, if I'm entirely honest, I'm more excited about the keyring that's coming as a preorder bonus. I'm old, and actually need a new keyring right now, so it's kinda like getting socks for Christmas and being actually overjoyed because you really needed some socks. Fucking ageing. Fucking bullshit.

No shame in that. I’m looking forward to my Shopto pre-order of Metroid Dread plus key-ring too! Not too sure my wife will thank me if I put the poster up in our bedroom though… Besides Metroid, games I’m looking forward to currently pretty much amounts to: Elden Ring Horizon Forbidden West God of War Ragnarok Yeah, that’s it.

I think it was probably Game Pass that killed any remaining excitement for me. It used to be "ooh, new game coming soon, will I buy it, won't I buy it, better check the reviews" Now it's "Meh, I'll play it if it goes on Game Pass eventually"

To me there's quite a difference to opinions, reviews, YouTube video reviews etc. to help divide if a game is for you and sitting watching someone play through a game while trying to "entertain" with their comments. I'd rather just, you know, play the game. I'm aware that I'm an old twat and in the gaming minority but /shrug

After Metroid Dread comes out there's nothing on the horizon before Elden Ring that has me all that bothered. I don't preorder games very often, but Elden Ring will be one of those games.

It used to be "ooh, new game coming soon, will I buy it, won't I buy it, better check the reviews" Now it's "Meh, I'll play it if it goes on Game Pass eventually" This is precisely why GP doesn't work very well for me. I don't really care about playing anything on it, even when they're games I was looking forward too. I fall into the mentality of "it's always available" and don't make an effort to play them. I start but don't finish most of the stuff that's on there.

Yeah I've had GP for a year and I think I'm weird in that I just don't like it. I don't like the thought of starting a game only for it to be taken away at some arbitary point in the future. It's also the same with streaming music etc in that as I don't have the sense of ownership, I don't feel as though I give it the attention it's worth. I like to own things and form a relationship with them (not in a sexy way).

Well, according to my pile of shame, I used to like owning lots of things I never got around to playing. At least now I can not-own all the things I never get around to playing instead. Even accounting for the Ultimate subscription, it's still much cheaper.
Edit- as 2021 Pigwhippers will attest, I'm not *entirely* over owning things I don't play - but I'm working on it...
