Bottom line is they see no value in it so it's not worth keeping regardless of how much or how little it costs. At least for RPS I doubt the people on the site ever saw much value in the forum except maybe occasionally the game clubs (which have been gone for years). That combined with there being just a handful of regulars using it for good while makes it easy to see why they don't want to bother with keeping it running. It's understandable, but I'm still a bit salty about how it was handled. Quite a few of us have been around for longer than anyone still working for the site, goshdarnit. *shakes walking stick*

Completely understand the challenge of moving the forum to a new platform and retaining the old posts, both from a technical and GDPR standpoint.
The decision not to maintain any forums however is surely a political one. To be fair, I can see the risk and we aren't worth the hassle (lots here saying they no longer visit EG at all, or infrequently anyway).
But frankly, the old posts are a loss - but then I could never keep up with the name changes and re-regs (I'm shit at names in real life, online it's much worse). But, this new home has much better features already so maybe the jump was for the best long term.
As for subbing, I won't be, and that popular now combo is really unfortunate timing for them

Any chance you can get us access to the letter from the editor each month? For old times sake. Or, to put it another way; When you go, will you send back a letter from the editor? I would walk 500 miles err, centimetres maybe, for quality gags like that.

Looks like a fair few people have issue with the mods, and specifically MrTom. Also a lot of mentions about the forum closing. Will be interesting to see how it goes for them.

I’d have subscribed if it came with a forum. Even a brand new one without all the old history would be better than nothing. But getting rid of the forums - not to mention the shoddy way it was handled - and THEN asking for money just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

That seems very expensive for the amount of content you get that isn’t freely available elsewhere.
I never visit the site anymore anyway, I just don’t read about games much.

The irony is, if the EG forum was still going, I probably would have subscribed- even though I never use the front page. That's basically what I do with Giant Bomb- it felt wrong getting the podcast(s) for free so I paid for premium even though video isn't my thing.

Wow. What a mess. The timing of this decision is _awful_. Yet, Oli's honesty in the comments is at least appreciated. But I'm mainly just left feeling disillusioned.

I thought they had billions of page views anyway, must be raking it in from ad revenues

When a cycling website I go to did this subscription deal they just said if you want to lose adverts lob us a few quid each month and it’ll help us do more, nothing paywalled, they had a few dozen comments in support as it came across as totally optional. Looks to me like there’s hundreds of pissed of eurogamers in the comments, a woefully misjudged strategy

I think it would have gone down a little better if they had more content on launch that wasn’t “what’s on my iPod today” and “look at our reviews, aren’t they lovely”, it all feels a little rushed. Also that they have a bunch of subscription models with Digital Foundry and their YouTube stuff that probably should have been consolidated.

They would have been better off doing a supplementary Only Fans page where the Digital Foundry nerds measure each others dicks obsessively.

There isn't a paywall for vast majority of stuff. I am all for paying to remove ads, just seems quite a lot when I compare it to other subscription services. Maybe they should have rolled into a single service across websites?
I have an FT sub and even then there is a premium tier. An ft sub is NOT cheap, so I'm quite pissed by premium stuff being locked away.

A lot of folks are commenting (in the comments section for the announcement especially) on the drop in quality of the articles over the years and I certainly find there is much less that attracts my attention than there used to be despite me being as much into gaming as I have always been. I think the biggest problem is that the demographics that they are trying to cover has massively widened. 15 years ago, most readers would have been a similar age and have a bit more predictable tastes in what we would have liked to read. Now they are having to cater for the likes of me (and older) as well as people young enough to be my children. We clearly won't have the same interest (on average) on game type and article style/type so by trying to catch us all, everything gets diluted and really appeals to no-one. They need to create two sites: a "Groovy, Funky Channel 27" version for the kids and 20s (Red Dwarf quote sorry), and the pensioner section for people in the 30s and up.

It’s difficult to get a lot of subscribers without a lot of high quality content that isn’t the same, or similar, to other sites. The likes of NYT manage it because they have a reputation and loyal following that’ll pay for that, and they’re used to paying for the paper every day.
I’m not sure it works as well when it’s for removing ads (not all trackers etc) and a few articles that are fairly niche. It’s tricky when it’sa big sure owned by a faceless corporation as well to get that interest from a community.
Good luck to those that work there though, maybe it’ll expand to a point where there is a bit more value for people that are interested. It won’t impact my usage of the site at all.

Hmmm, long slow slide to journalistic mediocrity in a bid to work the internet click system, binned the one thing there I was interested in (and badly) and then popping a cup on the ground to ask for (quite a fucking few) coins in order not to see ads I was blocking anyway and read about how the 23rd reskin of the latest Ubisoft shovelware reminds them of the sunlight hitting the shore on a childhood holiday to Margate.
