The EG forum was a liability all they needed was a suicide, murder or "comedy" incel rant to get a daily mail headline.
Though it's bizarre they want to expand into areas outside gaming, like food and film. Doubt the would work if there was a forum with active threads that would have had far better community interaction.

I don’t mind ponying up for content on the patreon model and the like, but after seeing what they’re offering as subscriber exclusives I just noped out. Pop culture podcasts and some navel gazing pieces don’t do it for me, and as shitty as it sounds I’m not paying to keep somewhere ad free just because the ad model is collapsing. Pay so it’s not such a shitty experience isn’t compelling to me.

I think craigy mentioned the old forum was php5 based so, if nothing else, the forum hasnt had a meaningful security patch for 3 years and sits on technology first released in like 2005.
So, yeah, a steep technical debt to pay for to keep a bunch of middle aged idiots happy.

Good luck to them with it. £5.99 is kind of eye watering though if they aren't really going to improve their output with some new blood and take things in a slightly different direction. I pay less for a couple of different movie/TV streaming services ffs.

On this point I'd argue they have/had a modern supported system next door in Discourse at RPS with experience in running it and migrating to it. Definitely appreciate this is still isn't cost free to the corporation though (and Discourse, iirc is a bit pricey) (and folks (Grizzly? BillNotBen?) pointed out what I forgot - that the migration was not pain free)
But I did think one of the benefits of sites being swallowed up by a global publishing empire was the economies of scale that could be applied to backend systems - a small bunch of EG idiots, a small bunch of RPS idiots, hell - expand it, *grow* new communites and get some Dicebreaker idiots & Cosplay Central idiots.
Ah, ignore me, I'm still sad, it's the last couple of days of the RPS forum

Bottom line is they see no value in it so it's not worth keeping regardless of how much or how little it costs.

oh and re EG supporter program - looks like exact same price as RPS - I'm inclined to defend their program as the RPS writing is excellent (& the sort of posts which should be on the front page for everyone), *but* they recently gave us existing supporters up to a year free supporter status as they moved systems, so we got rather a good deal, and I think it was quite a lot cheaper when I last paid

Speaking of which, and especially given the paucity of content for the EG supporter program, I am quite surprised that they havent banged their heads together and come up with not only a unified account but a reedpop megapass.

That being said, there is apparently quite a massive security issue by just having a forum around: It's quite a big password-email-username database at this point, The problem with that argument is that the user database is not used exclusively by the forum. For EG at least it's used by the main site as well so they haven't gotten rid of anything.

It's not like EG to release something shoddy and have to constantly fix it.

Craigy was having to manually fix people's accounts that had signed up and were complaining in the comments that things weren't working so business as usual really.

Oli answered that in the comments somewhere. Something about EG being on different code to the rest of the Reedpop network.

Lots of interesting theorising here. You're all half-right, half-wrong. It's a bit of everything all at the same time.
For a bit of technical inside baseball: most of our sites are now running on our new platform. RPS, VG247, Dicebreaker, Cosplay Central, etc. Thanks to the magic of modern technology Eurogamer's subscriptions are handled through our new platform while content stays on the old one. Eurogamer and the local versions are next up to move over wholesale. We're breaking ground on the project next week.
Whoever posted about security audits, patching, penetration testing, etc -- nailed it.
EG has traditionally always been a bit crumbly but we have made huge strides in the last year or so with our new platform, testing methodologies, deployment systems, monitoring, etc. The new platform is just way better. Our application development is miles ahead of where we were a few years ago and we have a lot more people. Moving away from legacy systems written in PHP is a big reason why.

They should start a letters to the editor section and really nail that local newspaper feel.
Dear Oli,
I can’t help but notice the divots on the lawn outside the men’s working club still haven’t been filled in.
