Sounds like you need to pick one of those things. Too many options leads to being spread too thin and not getting any of them done well.

Yeah, I've been through this. Wanted to learn guitar (twice), getting in to astronomy, learn a foreign language, signed up with the OU for some stuff...... Thing is, if you're going to commit to something like that, it is time consuming. And if you're just doing it for some kind of self-defined sense of achievement to aspire to....it just becomes another job, you know what I mean? I get the nebulous "I should be doing something with my time/life" but at the same time, there's value in just having your own time to yourself and the peace that comes with that. So every time now I fell like "am I wasting my life away playing games/watching tv/whatever" I remind myself that in setting myself random goals that I have to aspire to so I'm doing something worthwhile, I'm just being my own critic. Nobody else cares. Sitting down and stare in the the middle distance with your dogs, chopsen. Being *busy* isn't something to aspire to. I fully support this approach. Do whatever makes you happy.

That is good advice. To be fair during the day I think I can adhere to that. The trouble happens as I'm trying to sleep at night and the voice starts asking me what have I actually achieved that day.

I should probably spend less time on the internets, but that's about it. Whether I would do anything more productive with that time is another matter.

I used to pick pretentious books that you should read like Kafka instead of trash thrillers that I enjoy more.

I've decided not to upgrade my PS4 Pro to limit the amount of time I waste on games. The fact that PS5 is massive, ugly as fuck and unobtainable makes this an easier decision. I completely agree with the notion that time spent having fun is not wasted but in recent years I've found myself enjoying games less and less. I'm lucky that I really enjoy learning things, and I'm really getting a kick out of learning bass. If it felt like work there's no way I'd get anywhere, what's the point in spending your free time doing stuff you don't enjoy?

How do you get stars under your profile then? Some of you fuckers have a couple (I suspect shenanigans with Gremmi) but I’m on one.
It’s just a god damn popularity contest with you kids

It's just post count. Some have had there's artificially enhanced instead of putting the work in like a real man.

I see. Thought it was how many likes you’ve had or something.
Quality over quantity thank you very much!

I just presumed Gremmi and Nick had a private thread where they were sharing their most hilarious middle-aged men anecdotes with one another

One of you lazy cunts could have lifted all of our post counts from EG individually and applied them here. But nooooo, you were too busy going mad with power and stopping people from saying cunt.
Cunts.

Wow, EG axe their forums because of costs and THEN have the cheek to introduce a paid sub?!

In fairness to Oli he's replied to a few comments on it. The timing is a bit shit, but you really can't argue with how much of a bastard it'd be to migrate a bespoke forum to a modern platform.

When they asked about it a while back I thought it included the forum and maybe we get private messages back, I do pay £30 a year for my Giantbomb premium and dabble a bit with patreon to get some extras when I got a quiet month for podcasts etc from some others.
Don't think I need the EG one as it is but hope they continue doing what they do.

The size of the community was only a handful though.

Was shutting the RPS forum also a tech issue?

Not that it matters a great deal but I’d genuinely respect EG if they came out and actually said “we nuked the forum because it was a bit embarrassing and didn’t fit our corporate overlord’s culture”
The tech change stuff seems a convenient excuse, given they’ll have to migrate the comments so data transformation is needed regardless, but I get it.

If it was the case we were embarrassing why would they shut their other forums down?

Like I said, convenience. The stars aligned for something they’ve wanted to do for a while. I think somewhere in the discord Bertie or Oli or whoever’s staff there mentioned that they’ve talked about nuking the forum way before that for the embarrassment reasons and it was craigy’s debate skills (cheers craigy!) that saved it until now.

So start up a new forum, apologise about the lack of migration but keep the community.
A lot of good will was lost that day by EG and to request donations next month leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, he mentioned that Craigy fought to keep the forum today.

Was shutting the RPS forum also a tech issue? Partly yes, even though with RPS the membership was already far lower (and say what you will about Graham, I've worked with him and he does actually care about the various communities that sprung up around RPS). The pre-discourse forum (I forgot, Vbulletin?) was an absolute disaster that broke all the time and would collapse whenever you'd make a small change, and didn't even have a proper anti-spam feature. During my stint as moderator there were numerous idiotic tech issues that quite frankly should've killed the forum there and then. Instead, we got an upgrade to a far superior forum software... which broke because of the old forum database being such a goddamn mess. but I was focused fully on the Discord at that point anyway.
That being said, there is apparently quite a massive security issue by just having a forum around: It's quite a big password-email-username database at this point, and various data leaks over the past few years came from gaming websites having had their forums hacked. And if that happens, Reedpop would be responsible for not properly securing that data. So even with Discourse which I'm quite certain is decently secure, you'd still have to do constant security audits on a piece of software that's used by around 20 people. If I were in charge of RPS, I'd have made the same choice. I simply wouldn't be able to justify pouring man-hours into properly securing a database that if cracked would affect tens of thousands of people, even though the database itself is only used by about 20 people. If you'd nuke the entire database, ok: But you still have to maintain proper security on a feature of your website that is used by about 20 people, which takes a disproportionate amount of manhours.
So it's in part a tech issue and in part a security issue, and tbh the cost-benefit analysis simply doesn't work.
