I used to enjoy Skill-up reviews but these days he seems to have become more ‘comedy’ and his reviews just don’t seem to have the insight and level of analysis they once did.

The one thing I use EG for these days is their guides. I prefer text and an image to a YouTube video where you have to skip through minutes of preamble to get to the 5-second bit where they show you the exact location of A Thing.

Wholeheartedly agree, although I tend to click Reddit rather than gaming sites

Yes, that is the unfortunate condition that is a bane on YouTube where you know they're trying to reach that magic time length to get advertising revenue so will stretch shit out for an eternity before getting to the actual point.

They all eventually sell out to corporate influence as well, after that their words are worthless. It is very prevalent in the people I have followed in sim racing, a new piece of expensive gear gifted by a corpo every other week. Gets me all Cyberpunk 2077, kill the corpo scum.

We should do an age range poll to see what sort of crusty antediluvian demographic we're dealing with here.

Is Grizzly the youngest member? Does he also have the largest member?
These are the things I need to know.

Honestly I think YouTube is great for game reviews. It’s just a case of finding a personality you can tolerate. They aren’t all shouty teenagers, there’s plenty of fuddy duddy sorts like us, especially in the retro scene, and they often have a decent following.
But in any case I find the actual footage of the game from an honest play through to be more enlightening than anything. Though saying that I just can’t adjust to Twitch, or live-streaming in general. Just doesn’t work for me

I thought you were much older than that. Not in a bad way, your presence over at RPS just seemed more mature.

Just to be sure, I wasn't calling for taking every shitty review on YT at face value. But I look at gameplay footage and listen to the opinions of some gamers on YT who seem to spend a lot of time playing those games and spend some thought on making their videos. There's always skipping through trash involved because everyone knows most YT videos are trash. On EG, actual reviews have become rarer, and many of them feel like they're more about the author rambling about whatever random thing they're interested in than giving me an actual idea about the game. It just feels like random comments on a game instead of an actual review.
I'm still baffled that they didn't even bother to review Supraland.

Most of the youtube/twitch stuff I watch is ex staffers from various gaming media outlets.

You’ll be alright once we return to imperial age measurement systems, lunar cycles are more easily divisible once you get the grips with it

Speaking of dogshit and made up illnesses, spamdangled has started posting in the comments on EG front page. In the comments of www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-09-25-hitman-gog-release-sparks-drm-row-review-bombing-accusationSome dude said "hey dark, did you really have something wrong with your heart or are you all better?" He replied "Yes, they just got the precise nature of the dx wrong. I actually spent most of the last week in hospital. It's related to a renal condition that affects my heart and muscle function." Cancer was simply misdiagnosed.

I have got greater aspirations. I bought a violin years ago and a keyboard even longer ago. I took a writing course aiming to pursue my dream of being a writer. I started learning mandarin, aiming to hike around China. I wanted to learn to draw. I wanted to get really fit (nearly managed this one, then my body broke) and others that I can't remember (once upon a time I was even going to be a missionary).
However, earning a living, being in relationships and a genuine love of games meant I've achieved sod all (tbf I am putting my kids through school and keeping a roof over their heads). I do think at times that the 200 hours I played on the last RPG I picked up might have been better spent on the dusty violin, but then I enjoy gaming, I don't enjoy 'strangling cats' which is how my violin sounds, so much.
Today, I could pick up the violin or I could finally try out BioShock Infinite. I'll probably do neither as I've a ton of chores to do, but if I do get some time at the end of a tiring day, it'll be the game as it's just more fun. I work long hours, so tend to be knackered by the time I've a spare moment.
Anyway, chores await. Oh and I've been gaming since my parents bought me a Binatone with a light gun and various versions of pong and loved every moment of it since... Well maybe not dying repeatedly in Monty Mole / Jet Set Willy / any platformer ever.
Can't say I every imagined I'd still be gaming in my 50's but then my 50's sounded so OLD and something that would never happen to me, yet here I am a young at heart gamer trapped in a grumpy, stressed and wrinkly shell. 🙂

quitskingGenuinely sounds like you're me only 10 years or so on. I'm exactly the same man. Got a saxophone I keep trying to learn, running to do, a typewriter set up with multiple unfinished stories on the go etc.. And I'm about to jump on Diablo 2 instead 😐 I think, with me anyway, gaming is the only thing out of all these things I can do without my brain constantly gong "why are you doing this, you're shit at it, who do you think you are", and instead it just shuts the fuck up.

Yeah, I've been through this. Wanted to learn guitar (twice), getting in to astronomy, learn a foreign language, signed up with the OU for some stuff......
Thing is, if you're going to commit to something like that, it is time consuming. And if you're just doing it for some kind of self-defined sense of achievement to aspire to....it just becomes another job, you know what I mean? I get the nebulous "I should be doing something with my time/life" but at the same time, there's value in just having your own time to yourself and the peace that comes with that.
So every time now I fell like "am I wasting my life away playing games/watching tv/whatever" I remind myself that in setting myself random goals that I have to aspire to so I'm doing something worthwhile, I'm just being my own critic. Nobody else cares. Sitting down and stare in the the middle distance with your dogs, chopsen. Being *busy* isn't something to aspire to.

Yeah good point Chopsen.
I've come to terms with my unfinished To Do list (juggling, learn to touch type,(been trying since 1996), astronomy (I've had three telescopes over the years), languages (not going to happen, but I enjoy mandarin now and then), violin (I'd love to play Pachelbel's Canon), keyboard, learning to draw, 6-pack , write that booketc ) and realise that its just not going to happen and so what. I might get a couple done and if I don't who cares.
As it stands, I'm busy catching up on last week's workload and trying to ensure I don't miss something on the home front. I've more than enough to keep me going for a few decades more.
About all I do try and ensure I do is meditation and fitness. I don't always manage those, but I try.
