I still don't understand Discord, can't even find the swapsies thread. Are there threads you have to be invited to or something? If you're looking on the 'official' EG Discord then it's not there. I too was confused by this, but I believe it's actually an entirely separate one for the swapsies stuff. No idea what the link is, but I'm sure someone here has it. Thanks - I don't actually need the link, I just felt like I was missing out every time someone mentioned folks in Discord discussing this place. But I've scanned through the official EG Discord this morning and I really don't feel like I'm missing much.

I wonder, if Discord replaced forums, haven't gaming sites be replaced even more by Youtube? Nowadays, I find Youtube far more useful for an informed decision on buying a game than a review on Eurogamer. Same for exploring topics around games, there's such an amount of in-depth exploration or documentaries or interviews made by enthusiasts that I find much more interesting than a 10-minute read on some gaming site. In theory, websites like EG could be reduced to mere distributors of press releases. Oh wait...

Probably. Certainly, my gaming path is usually seeing someone on the forum talk about it and then I have a look on Youtube to see it in action.

I tend to rely on you lot more than anything to find out if something is worth my time and money. It's worked fine, mostly

Yeah, the forum’s been an excellent source of game info for me.
Films though… the stuff you lot like very often I find dire. That works the other way, too.

Given that Discord now has threads I suspect it won't be too long until it adds an actual forum to its feature creep

I only skimmed it the other day for the posts about the forum, but is the EG discord basically MrScumFTL talking to Bertie?

I still don't understand Discord as a way of building a community as there's just no permanence to what's been discussed so you just find people repeating the same questions again and again especially if it's a chat that acts as a information resource. I haven't been on the official EG Discord but that's deader than dead right? Which is ironic considering the forum was judged as dead. It really isn’t the same thing at all. Do forums really cost so much money to run?

Do forums really cost so much money to run? I help run a small (probably 150 active posters, circa 1000 total accounts,) forum. Despite our entire software stack being open source and thus free, our hosting plan, domain registration, security cert etc. costs £400-500 a year.

Forum -> metacritic -> youtube -> see if on gamepass. Youtube is my main media source these days, hardly watch any terrestrial TV TBH. View my subscriptions (games, iRacing, film channels ) and that does for me apart from Netflix. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing or if I am unusual in this, but that is how my media consumption has evolved

More than I thought, for sure! More than I though too, but trivial compared to the budget of EG or RPS, I'd guess. I think the issue is less cost and more that it's work for the IT team with no perceived benefit for the sites.

My impression of EG staff is that they seemed to hold the forums in contempt for some reason.

We all hated their reviews and pretended the front page didn't exist.
I'm surprised they didn't boot us out sooner.

Probably because they had adult content, were largely unmoderated, were unwelcoming to newcomers, and had regular bouts of drama that might have been intimidating to anyone still wanting to join. And because the participants made a big deal about not interacting with the main site in any way.
I mean, I liked the place, overall. But it was the Wild West, which has a downside too. And while you don't have to like Mr Reedpop finally shutting down a place that was costing him money for no benefit, you shouldn't be surprised that it eventually happened.

Pretty sure that's nothing to do with it though as RPS forums are nothing like that and they got shut down too.
It's just a cost cutting exercise and adjustment of their offering.

Cost was no doubt the main reason. All the other stuff may well be why there was no "fare thee well" on EGs front page however

There was some aspect of that in the RPS forums as well (esp. in the DARK DAYS OF 2013), but it's also notable that the RPS forums got shut down later despite having a far smaller userbase.
