This is why I get annoyed at the whole "forums are dying because discord" argument. They are two very different things, and the internet is a big place. Surely one doesn't have to cancel out the other.

I think everyone knows that, it's just glossing over the real reasons for closing the forum: money and the potential for embarrassment.
Craigy is taking responsibility, but I suspect that someone put the gun in his hand. I can understand RPS forumites being annoyed about the way their closure is being handled, but I think that Craigy showing up here shows that he hasn't succumbed to the cold, dark heart of Reedpop yet.
Anyway, this place is loads better than EG and, more importantly, my new pad will not charge or switch on FFS.

The notion that forums are obsolete because Discord baffles me. Why have an ongoing discussion on a topic if you can have a chatroom instead that will drown any other debate in repeating the same shit over and over again? I don't know, I just can't take anyone seriously who thinks Discord replaces forums.

It’s GDPR to some extent that’s killed forums. Throwing it out to some other corporate social service means the liability isn’t yours, but an official hosted forum is problematic. It’s why they killed the PM function for one thing.

I think it's closer to the truth that forums are dying because Facebook Groups (and similar,) are a thing. |

Which kind of leads back to GDPR, since Facebook can afford the massive apparatus to uphold GDPR compliance, whilst smaller players can't. More to those that already have.

People generally don’t want to have a conversation, I think that’s why forums are on the decline. On twitter you can just say what you think and if you’re lucky people will agree, if not they’ll argue. Critical thinking is hard for most people, soundbite media gives you a chance to feel like your thoughts are important for a moment without the risk of having to elaborate

Its not really rocket surgery. Kids dont use forums anymore and people who did have either grown out of it or lived long enough to end up in a pro-boards ghetto.
Theres nothing coming in at the left side of the forum pipeline.

Just did a DuckDuckGo search for 'eurogamer forum closed' and got a hit (3rd) for a reddit post with a fontgeek.io link (got the Kotaku article but don't think they've got a link), so it's not too hard to find if people really want to. Could make a sneaky edit to the Eurogamer Wikipedia page |

Ah, bugger. I can't quote properly. You mentioned archery and I wondered if you shot. Yes! Not right now, unfortunately, because having to manage both my education, mental health issues and the current sociopolitical climate got in the way a little bit, but I plan on going back after my exams are over. It's the inaccessibility to the old forums that gets me - there's a lot of fun threads I wish I could look back on. The Wayback link that's been posted helps, but that barely skims the surface since there's still a lot of undocumented material.
