*RPS used to call its reviews that to make painfully clear they were the subjective opinion of the staff member writing the review. That's been quietly dropped in the last couple of years as it goes against Reedpop policy and the almighty SEO. I feel like that seemingly small thing was actually the point of no return for RPS, or at least the point where we could see it from the outside.
Regarding the question about how often we looked at the actual site, I've been following RPS and Eurogamer through RSS on Feedly for a few years now, which allows me to scroll past all the tedious guide and hardware articles relatively quickly. I'm not sure if the good stuff is much less frequent now but it's certainly being drowned out by cookie cutter SEO bait.

The REASON, EG resonated with me, way, way back was because it's wasn't a 'normal' gaming/review site. Independent, different, alternative. Anyway, that's how I saw it, and ultimately, bought me here - for better or worse. Peace. |

This is what they don't get. Gaming isn't (mostly,) flavour of the week. Gaming news is, and publisher PR factories would like it to be (as long as it's their new shiny this week,) but a lot of gaming is slow burn. Minecraft is massive and over 10 years old, the biggest games on steam by player are things like DOTA and CS:GO which have been around for ages too. Some people just buy this year's FIFA/Football Manager/Cod and play more or less only that till next year's one comes out. Flight Sim has a similarly long haul (arf) community around it. Just because something didn't get announced, launched or start a new season this week doesn't mean people aren't playing it, enjoying it and wanting to talk about it. Especially PC gaming. I've got such a big backlog (and an ageing gaming rig) I'm almost always playing a game that's over two years old. The only games I ever play when they're just released are indie games I'm really interested in and can actually afford on release. |

"Hi, I'm craigy. Your management has decided to close you down. Don't blame them, blame me. I'll be hanging round to chat and answer questions."
A day later: "Hi, it's Graham who used to manage RPS. We're shutting you down, I'll be around to answer questions as well."
Silence.
Several days later: craigy vaguely answers one question.
Silence forever.
So yeah, I'm not in a very forgiving mood towards anyone from reedpop central. I understand the decision but it wouldn't have cost anything to treat us like actual people.

I can totally understand how they are pissed off though as he appeared from nowhere and said we are closing you down. He was never a part of the community where as on EG he was around for years and used to chat and joke with us.
I still don't believe it was your decision though Craigy, but that's all history now.

Yeah, it was really odd that the forum closure wasn't mentioned at all on the front page, considering how important it was to the site at one point. Just a quick couple of paragraphs to acknowledge it would have been the least I expected, even if most of the old staff are now long gone. Really felt as if the site was ashamed of it (with some good reason, tbf), and just wanted to push it out the back door as quickly and quietly as possible. However, also not sure why the likes of Kotaku have raised such a fuss about it too. It was a tiny and niche forum, hardly NeoGAF in terms of breaking industry news and opinion. No one issued a press release for them to copy and paste from. |

Can understand feeling pissed off at the Roger Reedpop steamroller, especially as he didn’t call out before flattening some forums, or take a seconds reflection afterwards.
