Back in my day, forums and IRC went hand in hand.

MrTomFTW — Yesterday at 2:53 PM Less sad, more bitter it seems I dunno though. I see the appeal of forums, but gaming is very "flavour of the week" which really does suit the flowing nature of Discord better. And speaking of a more structured experience, this would have been better in the meta channel. Which is for discussion of the Eurogamer site itself  This is what they don't get. Gaming isn't (mostly,) flavour of the week. Gaming news is, and publisher PR factories would like it to be (as long as it's their new shiny this week,) but a lot of gaming is slow burn. Minecraft is massive and over 10 years old, the biggest games on steam by player are things like DOTA and CS:GO which have been around for ages too. Some people just buy this year's FIFA/Football Manager/Cod and play more or less only that till next year's one comes out. Flight Sim has a similarly long haul (arf) community around it. Just because something didn't get announced, launched or start a new season this week doesn't mean people aren't playing it, enjoying it and wanting to talk about it.

There's quite a bit of history with MrTom and the forum which has led to him being discords champion. He doesn't actually believe what he's just wrote there

I still don’t get discord. When I had a quick look on the eg one it was almost completely empty. Is it like a chat room where nothing happens?

For the RPS folks, MrTom is just a deeply troubled individual who’s delighted the nasty forum is gone and doubly delighted that he gets to be the almighty ruler of the unofficial discord

How does he have time for Discord on top of his hectic career as a 20 year old Twitch streamer?

He’s probably made himself a massive gold EG Discord World Champion belt that he wears when he logs on

For those who don't do discord, here's everything Bertie had to say about it: Surprised the EG forum closing caught their notice at all, actually It's the end of an era, and it's a shame in some respects Yeah, why the fuck would Kotaku write about the end of an era?

An actual, properly active Discord can be really decent, for clan/guild stuff or if you just want to ask a basic question about a game etc., but it is absolutely no replacement for a forum. They serve almost entirely different purposes. I struggle to believe that the Eurogamer guys genuinely do not appreciate the distinction.

I'd mentioned previously it was an odd thing not to even acknowledge the forum closure.
Minor tweaks to scoring, changes of staff, the most minor site updates get a short article or news feed item. Closing a 20 year old community forum? Nada.
Nice to see outside perspectives agree that it was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Ironically in my experience the RPS Discord is a very good example of an effective Discord. With the clan stuff, basic questions and game organising. I use it as such. It's also hopeless as a forum replacement. There's room for both done right. Just easier for reedpop to not have the hassle of the forum as discord is somebody else's problem to maintain they don't mind it.

I know its an uncomfortable subject for them but I am surprised the front page of EG didnt even acknowledge it was closing the forum. I wasnt expecting an X-Factor contestant best bits tribute but the forum did contribute something to the site for quite a while. I think it's appalling. Someone else made the point earlier that the forum and regulards were instrumental in building the site. I know it's virtually all different personnel etc but still. An acknowledgement and thanks would have been appropriate.

Unless you are using it like a WhatsApp chat or like MS teams, discord is great for one thing: organising online games...

Discord works just fine when your community is 20-30 people tops. If the channels are deployed smartly, you probably won't have all those people talking in one place at the same time, but it really only works for ingame guilds of a modest size. It is perfect as a better version of the myriad VoIP apps, but it hasn't got a hope of acting as a forum, or even as a replacement for a traditional website.

Discord is basically the Live Chat sidebar on a video steam isn’t it, just a flow of meaningless text thats destined for the ether

Discord is basically the Live Chat sidebar on a video steam isn’t it, just a flow of meaningless text thats destined for the ether Big ones certainly are. There's one Discord I'm an active user in, there are about 20 of us, it's easy to keep track of what's going on. I'm always confused by big Twitch streamers talking about "hanging out with their community". The chat's going so quick that you start reading a new post and it's already off the screen before you get to the end of it. How is a streamer meant to actually acknowledge any of that whilst also playing a game?

Without speaking out of turn, the staff that seeded the forum are all long gone and the newer editorial team have never had a relationship with the forum, so doing a “farewell, thanks for the memories” type thing would come off as disingenuous at best. Tricky spot for everyone involved.

This is a safe space craigy, you can speak freely.
Is it true that Matulef was sacked for taking a shit in the staff room kettle?
