Sorry if it's old news, but I didn't realise how many sites also picked up the forum closure news after Kotaku. Nice write up on Techraptor which includes not one but two links to here: techraptor.net/gaming/news/eurogamer-forums-suddenly-shut-downI found this by Googling "Where did the Eurogamer forum go?" (without the speechmarks) because I wanted to know whether fontgeek appeared in the results yet. Turns out we didn't need to fill EG comments with "spam" links to direct stragglers here after all.

Impressive exposure, this place is getting. They'll be having to institute a dress code, next.
I virtually never read the EG front page. Even though I'd stopped posting in the forum, I'd still go there to read up on folks' opinions on a game I thought I might be interested in, though.

Ahahah, loved this comment under that Tech Raptor article:
Genuinely cracks me up seeing the name Font Geek appearing somewhat soberly in these articles.

His spelling is usually a bit better than that. Though the errors looked a bit forced.
They need a better sub too, the article says 'overzealous mod' when they mean 'bellend called Tom'.

I feel like these websites are getting it backwards, thinking there’s no need for forums when in actual fact there’s no real need for the front page just regurgitating press releases. I have a better idea of what’s coming out on the platforms I own by just loading up the eStore then I just Google to see what the fuss is and get taken to Reddit or something like that, who needs EG to tell me what’s coming out? The forum should be on the front page, you’ve got hundreds of opinion pieces right there driving traffic and you just need to pay some mods to keep it on track instead of some Wesley farting out his brain guff Yeah, I was thinking similarly. But I suspect it's just me being old and set in my ways as regards internet habits. I was even wondering about attaching a review wiki to the FG front end. The main subject page would just be really simple Half Life 2 Mostly great. 8/10 or whatever, with actual user reviews in the discussion tab. But then I realised this is probably done better elsewhere and it would most likely be a nightmare to manage. And a source of cliques etc. So fuck that.

But isn't the internets all about the clicks?

I know its an uncomfortable subject for them but I am surprised the front page of EG didnt even acknowledge it was closing the forum. I wasnt expecting an X-Factor contestant best bits tribute but the forum did contribute something to the site for quite a while.

Just a short article that said "Sorry we're shutting it down, but it has to be done. Thanks for being part of our community, now fuck off as you're no longer a demographic we have any interest in." would have done.

My favorite thing in the last few dying weeks is them scooping Gamesmaster auditions from a different forum when it was also happening RIGHT ON THE FORUM THEY WERE SUNSETTING, it was a very obvious "don't talk about the forum" moment. Soory, I don't understand what you mean by the "scooping Gamesmaster auditions" CARE TO EXPLAIN!?

Bertie and Tom Phillips are the oldest surviving members, I think. It doesn't seem that long ago from when he applied for the job via a forum recruitment post.

Yeah, Bertie was posting the other day about the Kotaku piece. For those who don't do discord, here's everything Bertie had to say about it: Yeah I saw this Not thrilled about Kotaku wading in but I get why people don't want to see old forums go And I get why EG forum members are miffed But I guess place hosting them has to make a decision at some point about them It's not like Kotaku has a forum either, so it's an odd thing to pile in on Surprised the EG forum closing caught their notice at all, actually It's the end of an era, and it's a shame in some respects Perhaps a glitzier send off would have worked better, but the time has passed now And I suppose it is what it is I like that there's a new forum setup for people who still want to talk together in that way It'll probably feel nicer being in control of their own space too I suppose things just change, and the forum was a lingering thing from a time gone by I hope no one is too sad about it

MrTomFTW — Yesterday at 2:53 PM Less sad, more bitter it seems I dunno though. I see the appeal of forums, but gaming is very "flavour of the week" which really does suit the flowing nature of Discord better. And speaking of a more structured experience, this would have been better in the meta channel. Which is for discussion of the Eurogamer site itself
