One of the reasons I prefer to rely on somewhere like this is because - as a recent example - there's no drama about a mythological video game character. I'm happy in my lefty snowflake bubble that also lets us say the C word.

Most other places it's just blah blah, Thor is fat, blah blah, Lara has no bewbs, blah blah why is that person non white, blah blah, what is wimmens doing here and so on. I appreciate how quickly that kind of thing is sneered out of here, not least because IT'S A VIDYA GAME.

Honestly this. If you ignore review scores/most of the fluff. IGN is a really good place to find out games are coming out. I like listening to the bomb ast but they have no one on staff who likes the same games as me (similar to nextlander) so it is sometimes a bit difficult. |

I do sometimes wonder if I've got some sort of closet autism when it comes to stuff like this. I don't understand how anyone could possibly give a semblance of a fuck about it. It's such a non-issue I fundamentally don't understand the point in raising it as a topic of conversation/concern in the first place. The whole thing just whizzes over my head.

Nobody who isn't Always Online actually cares. And even the Always Online folks probably don't care that much either, considering how quickly they move onto the next thing.
Usually it's about a week, maybe two.

I see that as true about so many issues when they are discussed online, especially on social media. The internet and it's boundless resources encourage a level of confidence in subjects that induce a transformation into rabid supporters or detractors of issue "X" utterly fanatical and quite often vitriolic for short bursts of time before reverting back to perfectly pleasant and mild mannered citizens IRL. |

Yeah, the forum does cover a fair amount without a lot of the bullshit. It baffles me to see people still so heavily invested in console wars and whatever
Some sites can pick up on smaller titles though which I appreciate hearing about, there's some good ideas floating around

Good God, that Thor article. I'm glad I'm not the only one baffled by it. I saw the headline and knew it would be a Wes article straight away. He's done some great investigative work in the past, but he outputs 10x as much dross. He has an ability to spin a story out of almost literally nothing and generate a tonne of comments. Guess it's a talent for getting hits tbh.

I have been wondering about who it was specifically that made the decision to vaporize the EG forums. I'm assuming it wasn't the editorial team. Is it likely to have been someone at ReedPop, otherwise known as Eurogamer's parent company?

It was down to the upcoming website code/design change. I imagine it was sort of the other way around - the forum wasn't compatible with the new code and no one would have argued to adapt the forum to keep it. Much easier to let it die, and would think all would have supported that.

I’m convinced the new code will align all their web platforms and they’ll all be merged in a year or two, the community side adds a headache they’d rather not have to deal with along with all the other headaches of running a forum for people who rarely read the main site anyway
