As much as people hate on EG though, it's sad for the staff who probably do care about videos games, etc but this is how it is now and if they want to make a living, they have to do their jobs

I get the impression that they are going to, at least in part, pivot to the model escapist and a few other places moved to of ‘Here’s is a bit of free content, if you like it, there’s more behind this paywall’ faux-indie model.

I do not know anything about discord either, but am I right in thinking that it is just a new age Skype?

I remember Oli Welsh popped up on the forum not long back and vaguely mentioned something along those lines.

They as much as alluded to that when they put up the 'We need to put in more ads and find new ways to make more money" article.

Also remember that survey they commissioned a while back loaded with questions like "If Eurogamer had a paid subscription service, what would you want from it?"

And everyone answered "a properly maintained forum" and look how that worked out.

Discord = IRC with voice chat
I'm sure it's great if you find a server with like minded cunts.

Parp? Oh it's gone.
Anyway the millions of views isn't a great indication of traffic. The forum alone probably contributed a lot of clicks and refreshes.
Now if the visits were in the millions...
I'd be amazed.

I'd imagine the guides stuff they did gets them a lot of hits - I know they're quite high up whenever I need to google something to unstick progress in a game. But I think they've had to lay off a lot of those people, so that's done for (and most of them were unfinished anyway).
I don't wish EG ill in any respect, and I probably read more of their content than a lot of fellow forum dwellers, but it's hard to ignore that quality is down, relevance (to me) is down, and the current crop isn't quite matching the high water mark from contributors past. Hopefully that'll turn around for them and/or they're doing just fine anyway thankyouverymuch.

It must be tough. The niches they have found seem to have been spun off into their own thing and the days of paying someone to play a game for 20 hours just to have it drown in a sea of other reviews is probably over, so whats left?

I'm sure there's a couple of quid in just doing what they are doing and chucking a subscription on it. I'm sure a lot of the more regular comment people would quite like their own walled garden.

I'm confused about the Discord thing. Is this the EG Discord? I'm on there and literally haven't seen a single post discussing this place at all. Do I not have access to some super secret area or summat? There's quite the hissy fit in the swapsies discord apparently. Ah, I see. Don't have access to that one. Had presumed it was just for those weird old, octogenarian types that still buy ... what are they called again? ... physical editions? Dinosaur stuff.

If you've used Slack at work, Discord is basically a carbon copy. If you haven't then that comparison probably doesn't help much.

I lurk on quite a few forums. For me it's one of the best formats on the internet to get long format opinions and have the time to ponder and reply. The EG forum has nothing on some I've encountered for hostility, shit posting, and trolling. However I do think that that's what makes a good, healthy forum. For diverse subjects and opinions you have to have the reems of shite. It's what makes the gold all the more interesting. I know there are serious problems with online bullying etc. But I always try to remember it's just words on a screen from someone you know nothing about. So if that can't be disregarded or ignored then what can?

So... had this script running to save all my old EG posts running since teatime. Chances of it being done by 10am...? Going to be a close run thing, I reckon. /taps watch

No. And also the bloody thing's crashed out now, and I didn't have the sense to make it save posts as it went along so everything it had saved is now gone. Oh well.

Well, I've re-jigged it now to save as it goes along and to read the least-recently-bumped threads first, as they should mostly be shorter and quicker to scrape, and set it going again overnight. Totally pointless but I'm kind of committed to the bit by this point.

Crashed again. To hell with it. Mostly very dull anyway. Although it has saved for posterity the time I listened to every song on my iPod in alphabetical order. Which despite it taking up 15 months of my life I'd forgotten about.
