The Swapsies Discord is, in many ways, the worst of here in terms of fluff. Pacrifice live blogging his life. Lots of unilad style bants and memes. I'm on there, but very very quiet and can't bring myself to read the majority of it. But there are some peeps on there that have clearly grown quite close and bonded, so I'm pleased for that - they're having a great time! But it's absolutely not for me.

I just can't keep up with a discord. I was on the swapsies one and it seems fine enough, with nice people but it moves too fast for me.

As for roguey, he’s another one that appears to have issue with the people in charge rather than any treatment he got, he said a few times he didn’t want to be part of “the gremmi show” whatever that means. Have you never watched The Gremmi Show? Best episode probably the one where he made a kid cry over Animal Crossing.

Yeah I can't stand discord. Impossible to keep up with anything unless you're on there 24/7.

Ironically, the only time I've ever thought "That was a bit unecessary" in my entire time on Eurogamer is when some melt tried calling me out on the swapsies discord and acting like a big man in front of his mates for something I'd said on the forum.
I only saw it about a fortnight later, because fuck discord. But yeah, that place isn't immune from people acting like old fishwives either.

On the topic of general forum behaviour, isn't this what most online communities are like?
I used to mod on the Queens of the Stone Age forum years ago and it was toxic back then but you had a lot of sound people and it seemed to work.
You had your newbies and it always felt like a sink or swim situation, if you quickly got used to the tone it was congratulations you're one of us, plenty left but there's no point getting wrung up over it, it's the internet.

Wow, have we hit the first Fontgeek navel-gazing stage already?
Impressive.

I'm in a couple of Discords and they are great but they also tend to be slower moving ones so they're a lot like forums. I'd hate to be on a busy Discord it'd be like being in a crowded pub with everyone talking past each other.
Navel-gazing? hmm, dunno. Mum had a word about our language tho.

It's a mixture of Mumble/Ventrillo/RogerWilco/TeamSpeak and IRC. It works well if people treat the channels much like forum categories, or just want easily accessible voice comms for gaming/jerking each other off. The format doesn't work for me as a medium/large community message board. Two completely different beasts in my eyes and claiming either as a replacement for the other seems a bit daft.

I use it for arranging games in Destiny 2, and for that it's a really great tool.
Its absolutely no replacement for message boards though.

Life moves pretty fast these days and reading this forum over the last few weeks has reminded me how much I've missed the lofi nature of a message forum.

No one really uses the swapsies discord now. Various eg members went off and created exclusive discord splinter groups. Full of back slapping and handjobs.

There was someone who quit before Rogeywon. Can't remember their name now but they deleted, and as far as I could tell, were a reg from EG
Just feel it's important to respect those we lost, whatever their name was

I only partook in the swapsies on the rare occasion, always seemed like madness going on in that thread.
Once bought a massive green original xbox off somebody on there with a pile of games for £50. Thought it was a decent deal. Can't even remember who it was from though, and can't even check EGs useless messaging system. Can you even PM on EG anymore?

Nope, they binned PM's over GDPR concerns. I think

I reckon they've been running low on funds for quite a while, so this GDPR bollocks was probably real, but also mores the point that they didn't have the funds to invest any time or effort on the community stuff anyway.
In this day and age you wonder what written content is really for anyway. It's an events business with a news front page.

Well according to Craigy, all the EG network sites are getting hundreds of millions of views. Not really sure how, they were notoriously always miles behind in news compared to places like Kotaku and GAF. I imagine anybody who is serious about gaming these days gets most of their info from Reddit these days.

I guess views aren't really what they were though considering ad revenues being in the toilet these days.
When do we get portable view?

I'd be interested to see the audience breakdown for EG, specifically if one were to take Digital Foundry out of the equation. I imagine we're all deeply underestimating how many of The Young Ones click through to shit like the "Why doesn't someone make a game about... the lack of reviews on a site famed for fucking reviewing shit" and wotnot.

I guess views aren't really what they were though considering ad revenues being in the toilet these days. When do we get portable view? They probably make a few quid from affiliate revenue. It's an authority site and ranks well. Expect to see many more "best VR headset deals" articles and less reviews and journalism. Which has been the trend for a few years now, judging from my 2-3 visits to the homepage per year.

I doubt anyone under 25 even know video games are reviewed in text form. With Youtube sponsored adverts, Twitch beta drops, and FOMO events the review articles have been irrelevant for years.
Can't imagine they're top of anyone's new radar either. The mind boggles where the 'millions' of page views came from. BOGGLES I SAY.

They don't even seem to do a lot of news these days or interviews for that matter. It's pretty much just 'there should be a game' and a copy and paste from some other site or Reddit. Like was said it's a newsfront for an expo business. I don't think that's exclusive to EG though a lot of gaming sites have massively dropped in quality of content and writing these days. It's either click bait, handwringing over politics with all the nuance of a first year politics student or a blog about their personal life masquerading as a review.
