Yeah I don't think we should be chasing people away but also if they're precious about people swearing I don't see why we should desperately change our behaviour on the hope that they join. That being said I have added c u n t to the censored word list. Cunt

It probably wouldn't do me any harm to say c**t a bit less anyway, I've gotten a lot swearier and angrier at everything over the last couple of years.

Haha, took me a moment to realise it wasn't just a straight word swap with minge.
Good work.

I dont think its particularly the need to have them join but more the fact that they dont want to should lead to a bit of introspection. Maybe? If I were coming afresh to this forum, the presence of shit like the MCU thread would be a massive turn off. There's not much name calling in there, not too much spite or negativity, but comic movies aren't my bag so maybe this community ain't my bag. RPS deciding we're not the place for them after a cursory glance at a few swears isn't exactly an exhaustive analysis is it? I'd imagine there are other forums (reset era etc.) that perhaps they also don't want to join - and that has a dramatically different tone. A grown up approach would be to suck it and see. Not that I think we should encourage douchebaggery on here - and sometimes it really is too much - but the place is what it is. Fuck I've even had to make peace with the fact that Ecosse is still around: he wasn't ever much of one for the swears but was possibly the worst person on here for a decade! Either way, mods changing a couple of posts (in literally the early weeks of the new forum whilst we're still finding our feet) and some other forum thinking we're pricks has been put way out of proportion. It's not exactly the end times.

If everyone saying cunt over and over again doesn't get those RPS guys to join then I don't know what else we can do.

If they do join they can influence the tone of the forum themselves in whatever way they'd like. Though based on that one thread where they're judging us, they don't sound like particularly open minded people, he says, judgingly.

PhattsoI wasn't suggesting you had personally said all of that, other than the bit I quoted you. It just seems to be the general defense for why they shouldn't come here, like we're losing something vital by not acting like overfamiliar arseholes. I've got nothing against a bit of bad language but you lose tone in text. I generally prescribe to the idea that we should act toward one another like we would expect other kids to act toward our kids. The Ecosse/Wayne stuff is a prime example. Regardless of whether they were dicks or not, call it out and then ignore them and move on. Constantly baiting and insulting them without cause makes you (general "you", not specifically you) the arsehole. When the other forum announced the closure the first thread created there was "Ecosse is a cunt", and then it was the first thread here 20 minutes later. We don't need to be that way, even when it's just "for the bants". This is largely nothing to do with RPS coming here, it's just not the way adults should be willing choosing to behave. Hopefully they do give it a chance though. Once they create some threads in the PC space they can largely ignore the rest of the threads/us anyway.

Ecosse seems to enjoy the fact that he’s the chief cunt on here, I don’t think there’s any real malice in that dialogue
He certainly gives as good as he gets anyway

The Wayne situation could have been handled a bit differently but I’m fully confident that if anyone took a genuine grievance to the mods it would be respected no matter who you are. Wayne chose to flounce out and use another platform to air his petty vendettas which looks more like his issues come from the people he dislikes than any treatment received. Wayne always struck me as a Dale-lite, being a beige contributor to the forum isn’t enough so without anything actually interesting to say he chose to stink up every thread he went until the conversation was about him. I fully expect he’ll be back in some guise once the EG forum disappears, he needs the attention

Derblington But that’s the solution, isn’t it? If the RPS folk want to make use of a sub-forum or the whole forum itself, I can’t imagine anyone objecting. If for whatever reason they choose not to, that’s also fine. I think you’re conflating two separate things which muddies the waters. The culture at EG and now in FG is what it is. If it’s not for you (a generic “you”), you’re not obliged to stay. Trying to enact some global culture change might be noble, but I’m not sure lecturing is the way to do it.

I really don't get what's so difficult about being less "hostile" (for want for a better term)?

As for roguey, he’s another one that appears to have issue with the people in charge rather than any treatment he got, he said a few times he didn’t want to be part of “the gremmi show” whatever that means. He’s always occupied the same space as vizinni in my mind, he’s got the answer to every question on every topic and increasingly outlandish claims to back up his expertise. He was harmless enough but I guess he couldn’t handle certain others wielding the forum power that he’ll never have so he’s over bitching about this place on discord in the hope mrtom will make him his lieutenant or something

Ecosse has on occasion rubbed me up the wrong way (matron!) And I'm sure he feels the same way about me. He has mastered a certain "style" of interaction.
That said he's contributed a huge amount to the gaming threads, especially Nintendo and to the audio threads amongst others and has been a part of the community since the early days. I applaud his thick skin as some of the interaction on EG was way beyond what was OK. I definitely regret contributing to that sort of interaction.
I don't think anyone holds any genuine malice towards anyone else on these forums and text doesn't always convey sentiment in its intended form.

I guess some people just invite hostility after a while. Its usually after persistent and wilfull fuckwittery. I can't think of many people that received 'hostility' without them at least in significant part strongly inviting it.

Worth pointing out that the last few pages of introspection are the sole reason I'm now aware of a "problem"

You want culture change. That’s hard to do. Lecturing won’t achieve it. It also ignores the fact that *A LOT* of people here *ARE* already behaving that way. I throw swears around for (relative) comic effect, but never directed at someone. I try to put in as much as I take out of the community. I try to help people out who need helping out. I try to avoid all the obvious shitty drama. Most of the people I enjoy interacting with on here do much the same. It's why I'm still around (like a bad smell) after two decades. And while I'd love to move on from the Ecosse thing, that dude is the reason I bailed on the forum for a couple of years (topically, a couple of years during which I tried on RPS for size) so it's quite personal for me. I fully understand that people who weren't directly impacted would look on in dismay. Perhaps the fact that it really is only a handful of users out of hundreds that gets that sort of treatment suggests it's the exception and not the rule. I don't think, on balance, we're all that bad. And I absolutely don't think, on any level, that we need to enact dramatic changes in the hope that another exiled forum will love us more. For all the fucking whinging, let's not forget one thing: EG is closing the forum. Within 48 hours of that news the community had banded together en masse to try to preserve as much of what we had as was possible, and has spent the weeks since trying to encourage as many people over as possible. It was a fucking beautiful process to behold, and I'm proud of you all. Let's keep that in mind, eh?

We're all cunts on way or the other. Some are cunts for one reason some are cunts for the other. At the end of the day this is a place where cunts can be cunts together.
To cunts.

I wouldn't describe it as a problem just trying to preserve what made EG great and at the same time lose some of the things that weren't so good.
Like Phattso I'm amazed at how successful the transition has been, I hope we also get some new faces.

I've honestly never seen anyone get treated like shit for absolutely no reason from the regs. While the bigger thing is obviously to ignore it, I also don't really see the issue with people being called out when they start spreading from thread to thread and deliberately causing issues when hundreds of others don't have a problem using the place on harmony.
While we've established it's not a 1:1 Eurogamer, we'd lose something if we did the Reddit safety thing of adding /s after everything to wrap everyone in cotton wool. It's very obvious 99% of stuff is light hearted whether you've been here 5 minutes or 5 years.

I'm confused about the Discord thing. Is this the EG Discord? I'm on there and literally haven't seen a single post discussing this place at all. Do I not have access to some super secret area or summat?

It was a fucking beautiful process to behold, and I'm proud of you all. Let's keep that in mind, eh? That's pretty much it in a nutshell. I don't honestly think we're as bad as all that. There's a lot worse places on the interent and over the years I've been here and there I've had lots of help and support on so many issues, and tried to be as supportive as I can in turn when it's something I can help with. I'm as guilty as anyone as throwing dodgy language about and, quite frankly, talking pish, but it's all meant in good humour, as is 99.9% of the other posts I see on here. Of course there's been the odd square peg / round hole incident over the years. Not everyone gets on all the time, and some just rub others up once in a while. There's not one place in living history where humans interact that that's not happened. We're also not always our best every day and sometimes say things out of turn. Again, that's part of being human. I don't think we should be too hard on ourselves.
