You can donate directly with the link at the bottom saying click here to remove banner ads. It can do one time payments or monthly. It all goes into a kitty that neilka can parse out for the forum stuff as needed. Done What happens if the kitty builds up to way more than we're using? Not that I'm massively bothered, but given the generosity of folks here and the number of people who answered that poll saying they'd do this, I can imagine donations exceeding usage. |

Everyone here is generally good, and 99% of real abuse is directed towards actual cunts like racists or homophobes. Balkanisation of middle-aged gaming communities is not the way forward. Shame about Roguey, but I think the tag was maybe a bit to close to home for him to have a sense of humour about. Hopefully he re-regs at some point. Alternate take: maybe you guys should consider toning things down if you want extra people to join.
The 'we only abuse people that really deserve it' excuse is just bollocks, anyone reading the EG sunsetting thread isn't going to know the history of all the posters, they're going to see a pile-on and someone receiving some pretty nasty abuse. It's no surprise if they noped the fuck out of this place having seen it.
Same with editing posts and custom titles, funny for those in on the joke, not necessarily so for those on the receiving end. Roguey was publicly branded a liar, again not a surprise if he takes it as a sign that he's not really welcome.
In summary: you're all cunts. Now, can I have a funny title to show I exist?

The thing is - this is the vibe. This has always been the vibe. Over the years even EG had massive variation in moderation. In my brief dalliance with the ban hammer I wanted to be consistently blood and thunder to anyone that was genuinely unpleasant. Plenty of mods on the other end of that scale. Plenty of mods who got off on other things like correcting threat titles. A scary number of mods did literally fuck all for years. One thing is for sure: moderation on EG wasn't universally loved, and everyone was convinced that The End Was Nigh pretty much constantly.
At least here on FG it's long standing community members doing what looks to be fairly light touch moderation; long standing members of the community probably know where the line is drawn. So far the only people bouncing off it are people who had... issues to start with. I won't miss Wayne. I'll miss Roguey a lot, but that cunt spoiled the season opener of The Walking Dead for a me a few years ago so JUSTICE IS SERVED. If that's the extent of the (over) reaction to moderation here, I'll call the migration a success.
In summary: who gives a fuck If people like RPS exiles come or not? From my brief sojourn to the RPS forum several years back, we're not missing much. And it's not like EG was any more likely to attract exiles from elsewhere than this place is.
Let's just accept that this forum is going to be ~500 regs, around 1500 lurkers, and we're all going to be here until we die. Last one alive gets to turn off the payments to stop the ads.

I think the problem with this generally is the tone, especially for anyone new who may be interested coming in but it doesn't only affect them. The excuse of "I just want to be able to insult who I like with my curse of choice and then claim it's in jest because I'm British and it's cute" is bullshit, and it does get a bit Lord of the Flies far too often. The forum was started with a thread called "Welcome, except for the solo poster that we're going to continue to single out", for example. It's just totally unnecessary.
There are moments of greatness with the various support threads that crop up now and again, not denying it. Whoever the poster was on their side that claimed we pride ourselves on being this way are right though.
By the same token of it not really mattering if they join, what's lost if the word 'cunt' wasn't posted 30 times a day, or mods didn't edit posts for fun?
Considering they're going through the same situation as us with seemingly a much smaller group it could be good if they found us welcoming, and had a new place to waste their days away with other nerds, but instead they get "who gives a fuck if people like RPS exiles come or not?" There was an period in the mid-2000s where being mean and grumpy was seen as a decent substitution for having a personality and I dont think EG ever really grew out of it.
I said it a few times on the old forum but

Is just pathetic and probably a contributing factor to having the forums shut down in the first place.

And look through my post history and count the uses of the word "cunt". In fact count the times I've personally insulted anyone here. In 20 years. And I have absolutely no issue if the RPS people join. The more the merrier. But why is it suddenly a success criteria that we be instantly likeable to any and all external entities. This is a community. For better or worse. It's what it is, and wringing hands isn't going to change that. For the record though - when I joined there, *they* weren't welcoming. And the threads I hung out in were *full* of people having pedantic arguments and name calling. Holding them up as some bastion of purity is very VERY odd. They're a community. For better and for worse.  So yes - I, me, personally, don't care if they stay away. Equally, like our recent Italian brethren, the more the merrier. A few post edits and a couple of swears shouldn't be the end of the world, as some people here are making out. And I'm with Gary Spinkick - the hazing of newcomers at EG got old years ago and, by and large, had stopped. So basically chill the fuck out. It'll work out. If other exiles want to find us and see if it can work out, sweet - but fuck you if it's now the personal life's mission of every poster on here to be on best behaviour just in case. Jesus wept. Note: that's the first time I've personally directed a swear at a poster in a while not in obvious jest.  |

When I was accused of lying by a few people including a mod a few days ago, I thought about quitting as I don't need that shit in my life. I like EG for the humour, the advice, the caring when someone's life goes to hell and the information, but I don't like the "pile on" mentality when people act like they've got a wounded animal in their midst that needs putting down and I also don't like that people are not letting this be a new start as they said it would be. I'm in my 50's and I guess - as I said - I'm just getting a bit old for some of this shit. That said, with thunderstorms in the air, I've a migraine, so my brain is a bit fucked up at the moment. |

There is obviously a difference between an 'irreverent tone' and just being a twat for the sake of it. Im not saying we should adjust our behaviour for the sake of being welcoming to people who dont even want to come here but I am saying that sometimes a chunk of stuff is stupid and needlessly cruel.
I suppose, narcissistically, the line is whether or not I find it funny.
