Hooray, I finally fucking finished act 1.
Jaheira sounds weird. I guess it's good to see her again, but I've nfi why she's in this game. As far as I can tell, the plot has nothing to do with the previous games, so her turning up just feels like something for the fans.
I did love the little conversation with Elminster, though. Love that guy.

I'm not familiar with the earlier games (always bounced off the real time with pause combat). Were Jaheira and Elminster from those? Karlach mentioned Jaheira being a legendary figure.

Eliminster pops up in anything set in the Forgotten Realms. The old source books are written from his or Vollo's point of view.

Though perhaps you need to have Gale in your party, because his message is specifically about Gale.

Jaheira was a party member (and a romance option in the second game). Elminster was in them too, but he just pops up from time to time (sometimes under a pseudonym) to deliver plot-relevant stuff. It would be cool if he were recruitable, but given that he's like this legendarily powerful wizard, it would probably turn the game into easy mode.

I kind of want to see what would happen if I sent a fireball his way before he talked to me in act 1.
I assume he'd just murder all of us without even breaking a sweat, but it'd be funny if there was some special "ouch, that tickles!" dialogue.

You meet Elminster regardless, Gales plot ticks along without ever needing him in the party before act 3.

Have you put the knockback on eldritch blast as well? You can basically stop anything getting out of the cloud. Huh. I decided not to add knockback as I assumed it'd be annoying if I push them back a few meters every turn. Didn't think of the possibility to keep them in the hunger of Hadar cloud. I think I'll add it when I next level up.

I'm going again. I have a sketch of a core party in mind, but I'm not even going to try to min/max builds or whatever. The game isn't that hard so might as well go for whatever seems most fun/interesting at every turn. Not going to be puppy-murdering evil, but it's not going to be a Jesus playthrough like my first one.
Astarion as PC. Bard, though I haven't decided on Lore (more magic) or Swords (more stabbing) yet. Will probably multiclass at some point, but I haven't put much thought into it. Mostly I'm curious how the origin stories turn out when you play them yourself, and I'm going to make him as much of a skillmonkey as I can.
Lae'zel - Monk. I've never played a monk in DnD and have no clue how they work, so it'll be fun to find out. I also noticed there's an enormous number of items for unarmed attacks, and I think monks are the only ones who can make good use of them.
Shadowheart - keeping her a cleric because clerics are just stupidly good, but going to spec her into another domain as I never got any use out of the Trickery stuff that's her default. Probably Light or Tempest for more offence. Also going entirely the other way with her story this time.
Gale - Wizard or sorcerer. I just never used him in the first playthrough. Would feel silly to spec him as anything but a wizard/sorcerer given his story. I've never played sorcerer so might give that a go. Maybe multiclass both? I'll have to see how the mechanics work out.

I'm still trying to make my way stealthily through the Shattered Sanctum, slowly taking out the goblins. Making slow progress but I've taken down approx 12 gobbos so far, plus the scrying eye thing. Annoyingly, the drow bird has suddenly appeared. Possible re-load incoming... My vague plan for her is some combination of Hold Person / Tasha's Laughter / Shadowheart's distraction trick.

A decent Monk can be damn effective. Someone played one when I ran Princes of the Apocalypse. She could zip in, smack someone up, and then zip out again.

Laziel is never in my party for instance as I am playing a Paladin. Will I miss out on her story. I did have to put her in the party in the druid camp to advance the cresh ploat though.
Also I do not have the warlock guy in my part either. Will it matter?

I've basically resigned myself to just not using Asterion and Wyll this playthrough. I'm sure they are great, but my appetite for content only stretches so far.
By the by, is there an easy way to transfer equipment from people not in your party, to people in your party? Like, if I want Karlach to use a nice mace that Laezel picked up, is there an easier way than "go to camp, dismiss Karlach, recruit Laezel, get Laezel to drop the thing, dismiss Laezel, recruit Karlach again, get Karlach to pick up the thing"?
I feel like you should have access to everyone's inventories while at camp, but from what I can tell this is not the case.

Scroll down through the list of items on the left and it shows you what other party members are carrying. Click on the 'thing' and it will equip it into the appropriate slot for Karlach. At least, that's how it works in the PS5 interface.

I guess that's an easier way to do it if they are both in your party. But I'd prefer a way to get equipment from benched party members, while you are at camp.

There's no way to access inventories of people not in your party, or if there is I certainly didn't find it (I suppose technically you could pickpocket people at camp, but that's not helpful).

Finished Act 1! Went via the mountains after clearing out the crèche on the way - mildly amusing I spent so much effort talking my way in there and following Laezels lead only to murder absolutely everyone on the way out. Not sure if there was a more efficient way to go about things.
30+ hours and still very much enjoying it! Can confirm performance appears to tank in Act 2 on Steam Deck. Hopefully the patches keep up with my progress.

I don't know if there's a way to peaceably resolve the thing with the gith in Act 1, without giving them the cube thing. I tried! But I had to kill them in the end.

When I spoke to the Gith commander person, they seemed to know I had the device, even though I hadn't shown it to anyone until then. Refused to hand it over, so I got into a fight with them. Same with the Inquestor. Not sure about the rest of the base, as I went into the secret tunnel near the Inquestor fight, where I was able to fast travel away (not before grabbing the excellent mace that was down there). Interestingly, I initially went through the secret passage before entering the device. Second I stepped through the hidden door, Lae'zel turned on me. The journal indicated this was due to killing the Gith Inquestor. She wiped out the party (we were all really weak after the fight having all been knocked down except for her), so I reloaded and went into the device first. Seems that stopped her turning on us. Bit weird, as it seemed more to do with not listening to what the Queen asked for rather than killing the Inquestor - as I say, Lae'zel was the only one left standing in that fight and she delivered the killing blow!

Lae'zel got really shitty at me when I didn't hand the device over, but I got a chance to talk her down with a tough persuasion check. But even though she didn't attack me, she remained shitty up until the rebel guy showed up at camp and turned her. She seems ok now. It's pretty weird how in the bag for the queen she is. Like anyone with half a brain can see how dodgy it all looks.

Almost all the Gith are more or less zealots. I was more pleasantly surprised by how quickly Lae'zel reevaluated things and told the Vlakith to go fuck herself once she found out the truth.

Started this on PS5 last night (had early access but in the end couldn't abuse the 72 hour head start so only started a day early) and fuck me, I'm immediately loving it.
Spent far too long at the character customisation screen - initially thought I'd go Bard as lots of articles saying how fun Bards are to play, then wanted to try and wild magic Barbarian, but in the end settled on a Dragonborn Warlock. Acid breath coupled with some cool spells, good charisma options, feeling good about this.
I will probably try a melee focused run-through at some point I'm sure, and also tempted to try a Dark Urge playthrough too. Can see this game taking lots of hours of my life...

Dark urge is a lot of fun and goes to some interesting places.
It's what I'm doing on my solo game and it's been an adventure.

As for my adventures in the Shadowlands without a moon lantern... ... I loaded up Shadowheart with health potions, useful sounding spells, some headgear that give access to an invisibility spell, elixirs, speed potions etc. All for naught. Did you try the other entrance to Moonrise, avoiding the town entirely and jumping over by the docks? IT WORKED! It was only 2 turns or so to get to the docks and once across, there's lanterns about that protect you from the curse. I wandered about trying to find a fast travel point but accidentally triggered some dialogue twice and then accidentally started a fight (with Shadowheart solo). I think I'll just use a potion of speed and dash my way across with my whole party. It was quite doable.

Oh dear. I met with Cerys - "sorry I missed you at the Grove!" - at the Inn, and according to her Zevlor is still alive and being held captive. Sorry, but I stood next to his corpse, which I was why I had to wait until now to finish the quest! .
