I've only played on a controller and the game is great, only thing is I still press c to crouch as I not found that on the pad yet.

This downloaded onto the ps5 earlier, I think it is due to unlock, late tomorrow afternoon...The missus will be happy. I think I will give it a go even though I hate turn based combat. I did read one review that said if you do not like the combat, simply put it on "easy/story" that way you will not get bogged down with long strategic drawn out battles I'm cool with that I tend to play most games for the story and their worlds anyway.
Other option is couch co-op with wife, just hang back and let her do all the killing!

The PS5 version is sitting there on my dashboard taunting me with the timer icon. Up for some co-op? How would it work? Playing through solo and then teaming up with others occasionally??

If you start together you both create a character or can use one of the origin ones. The host can play the save whenever but if the friend joins they get their characters back.
Can split the party any way you like.

I'll certainly do some co-op, probably do my first run solo though. Especially as I go away on holiday a week Monday, not great timing for BG3 unfortunately, one reason why I stumped up for Deluxe.

Yeah, they can also join at the start and make their own character. I would recommend taking an origin one for a co-op friend though as if they don't join again you still have 3 interesting NPC's.

I'm new to this type of game, played for a couple of hours and rerolled once I worked out a few things, all on easiest difficulty.
Youtube channel fextralife helped a lot and looking to play through it again as I've fucked over a lot of people and missing a few companions you could say. Seeing a youtube vid on companions and realising if your looting pyjamas you probably went wrong somewhere is great.

Turn based combat bores me to tears and I can't plan things ahead to save my life. Greatly enjoying the game regardless.

Yes, I've had several large battles which took at least 30 minutes to get through – and one of those I had to replay several times (including a ragequit) after getting wiped right near the very end.

Missus has uploaded her 220 hour save from the laptop to MY! ps5, her getting to grips (literally and figuratively) with the ps5 pad looks like being a laugh. To be fair looking at the menus for everything and I do not think I will be playing.

Well after, er, 6.5 hours my pretty new DualSense finally mentioned it was running low of juice so I thought that a good time to stop playing for the night. It's a bit good isn't it?
edit: harpies can fucking do one though, they were the toughest challenge I've faced so far and they had pretty much fuck all to nick once I actually did kill them.

So…this should be playable on a small-ish 40inch screen on ps5? I’m in the market for one for my sons birthday (yeah right) and fancy picking this up in the next month or so with it.
As it is I’m finding blood bowl 3 almost impossible on the Xbox at that screen size - have to literally stand next to the screen.

I play on a 42" in my bedroom. They've done a good job of maintaining text legibility and I think the options for resizing are there (I've not had to use them though)

Text being too small in games has an annoyance for me for years. Not had any problems with this. To go back a bit to the "this should/shouldn't be the new benchmark for RPGs, I just came across this: "On the other hand, so long as Larian is generating enough revenue to make payroll, Vincke can operate the business in whatever fashion he chooses. The downside, of course, is that a single flop could completely tank Larian — hence the three years of early access." www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-08-18/-baldur-s-gate-3-is-a-huge-hit-thanks-to-privately-owned-larian-studios?leadSource=uverify%20wallThis game represented a *massive* risk for Larian. They self-publish and seem to work on one title at a time, so there isn't a stream of other concurrent titles to help with cashflow. They went all in with this, and it paid off. But it could have so easily gone the other way. I also find it interesting how they didn't get any shit for the protracted early access.

I guess it's because they have used it before and always come good. They are afforded trust based on that and it's not a dissimilar game to what they have previously succeeded with albeit on a much bigger scale.

It's not just the scale or size of it though. It's got depth, the only game I can think of that's gone this far trying to make it free form like tabletop. You could make a way smaller game with text dialogue, less visuals and it'd still be amazing.

I'm a bit of a financial nerd, and just find the financial aspect of this fascinating. Did early access and residual sales of D:OS2 *really* provide enough cashflow for a staff of hundreds over 6 years? I'm guessing Vincke would be personally on the hook if there were loans involved, and I can imagine that would not have been cheap. Would you try to convince a bank to lend you money to develop a game? Where did all the money come from?

I imagine Wizards of the Coast invested money in it as well. They're the actual license holder for D&D and Baldur's Gate, so they'll get a share of the revenue.

DOS:2 sold about 7.5 million copies apparently. Where they self publish that's about 375 million if you estimate a copy being 50 dollars.
Around 400 staff at Larian.
Just to chuck a few more numbers into the equation.

It's worth remembering that the studio wasn't that big for most of development. What I've read (and take with a pinch of salt as I don't have a direct quote on hand) is that they paid for the license and WotC is not an investor.
I'd be surprised if there was no outside money at all. Belgium also has some tax incentive stuff for culture, but no idea how/if it relates to games.
No matter what it seems obvious that it's a risk. It would be for any studio unless you're Valve or something and have both independence and a continuous stream of Fuck You-money, which Larian certainly doesn't no matter how successful D:OS and Early Access have been.
