Of course. I'm not bloody hunting down some gnome because he stole your boots - I've got real shit to do. Underdark spoilers: Those mushrooms... I set off a huge chain reaction and from out of the flames ran a flaming dwarf. Whoops.

Hah, I'm having fun in the Underdark, but I've probably made a few enemies. The Drow really need to build some handrails.

If you've talked to key quest people you should have gotten several hints that Moonrise Tower is your next major destination after Act 1 and that the Underdark is one possible way of getting there, so it's not unreasonable to explore it even if the main quest is your impetus. It's more of an issue in Act 3 where some of the main bad guys have been within striking distance almost from the start, but I've spent a week sorting out my party members' personal issues and doing random side quests. To some extent I think you just have to swallow that cognitive dissonance in RPGs. Gathering power and allies makes sense, even if it might not be 100% satisfying as an explanation for why I'm taking a break saving the world in order to retrieve some random lady's lost slippers from the Discombobulating Catacombs of Nerflerghergh. They're just structured very differently. Act 1 is exploring, Act 2 is more focused on a single objective with multiple ways through but you seem to go through one, Act 3 is a big immersive sim playground with a few targets that you can basically single mindedly knock out the second you arrive. Everything else is optional, it's a big thriving city with lots going on. I think it confused some dialogue later on but I almost immediately snuck in and bumped one off Hitman style.

People should probably play both before making that claim, hicksy. But both games cater to different gamers so I can see people leaning heavily towards one or the other.

It does sound like Starfield has turned out to be a Bethesda game in space. I'm sure that will be ideal for some, but I'll be happy to stick around with BG3, which I still have plenty to do in (only just coming towards the end of act 1).
I just let my Game Pass sub expire this month, but maybe I'll re-sub to give Starfield a go in a few months.
Now, a Larian space game would be my idea of heaven!

I'm hoping to get around to both at some point in the future. May wait on a sale for Starfield, just simply because it may be a while before I get to it, so may as well, right?

Definitely sounds better than Starfield. Most the reviews seem to say it's not as good as previous Bethesda ones, if you think BG3 is better than them you can establish a transitive relationship without playing it. Or forking out cash.
Still wondering if they'll add a Patch 3 with more epilogue as I kinda want to load up my last save and have the ending bug free.

Some final thoughts for those about to embark into acts 2 and 3: I haven't quite finished yet because my PC died and I won't get to build a new one until next week. I have played almost all of Act 3, got all the mcguffins, finished every side quest I could find and finished or advanced every companion quest as far as possible before the point of no return. I've seen some bugs (still only one quest breaking one), but I'm not quite recognising the idea that it feels unfinished. There are a few threads from previous acts I would have liked to see more of, but nothing has felt incomplete or broken. It might vary depending on the choices you make of course, or maybe I've been relatively lucky with bugs, but I've seen a lot of general complaints like this about the last act and I've just not been having that experience.

That's already being partially addressed with Patch 2, with more to come. More here, especially under User Experience (potential spoiler warning to be safe, but I didn't see any big details about anything): baldursgate3.game/news/community-update-24-looking-to-the-future_88

Ahh, I think I've been stung for the Deluxe Edition on pre-order which gives 96 hour early access.

Enjoy. I was wondering how it would support controllers, so plugged my Xbox controller in. Almost a whole different game in terms of UI, but done very well.

I've only played it on controller so far and for 95% of things it's been fine.

Just use tactical view if you are ever having troubles selecting items with a pad. As soon as you get the knack of that using a controller is just fine.

You can shove people off of ledges and live out that revenge fantasy.
It's my favourite game I've played in years, alongside Elden ring.
