I only tried Vulkan and it's been fine. But I am a dickhead and basically always pick Vulkan as it's Open Source.

Ha, I was reading through that review and saw one of the pictures included: Unless I'm misremembering the thing you need to open it is in the cave that you can get to via a couple of hidden entrances in the blacksmith's basement in the same village. *Edited to make the spoiler less spoilery. I thought I cleared that place. I'll go back to have a look one of these days.

I've noticed the performance degrading also, so I'll give Vulkan a crack.
Recently reloaded back to near the start and remade a bunch of choices because I ended up in a dungeon with only myself and 1 party member and that fight was impossible. After initially trying to bite the gith lass which ended up with her dead and telling wizard jesus to fuck off, I just couldn't progress. Now they're both in my party it's much smoother sailing. But when I find a replacement for the gith I'll try bite her again because bullying Shadowbae is just not cricket.

She isn't too far in really so it's worth having a bit of a look about for her if you are looking for a ready made replacement

Fucking hell, how big is Act 1? I think I've got the prompt to go to the next area, but with a choice between the Underdark (which I'm doing) and the mountain pass.
I feel like I'm missing out on a whole separate area. Which is 100% fine if that's the case, but it's a bit nuts that I'm 40+ hours in and am not even close to Baldur's Gate.

You can do both routes - I went Underdark did that, then found the mountain pass exit in the next region so went through that and cleaned that area up as there was a juicy mission there.

The prompt is basically a warning it will resolve the Goblin/Druid situation if you haven't done it.
The Act 1 area is still available up untill near the end of Act 2.

You can do both should you wish, I had a bug with a boat not appearing in underdark and went mountain pass instead. Edit I was late to party, will teach me not to refresh.

Awaiting PS5 ed but these comments are all pushing towards me prioritising Starfield (assuming it’s not a bugged car crash of a release) and then giving BG3 6 months to patch up and either discount the digi release a bit or even better hope that they relent on their digi only channel decision and put out the physical copy in which case I might bight earlier.
Recently started Pillars of Eternity to scratch the CRPG itch and enjoying that too but BG3 is looking the nuts (pos exception chapter 3) so enjoying living vicariously by all your positive gaming comments!

You're prioritising a Bethesda RPG on release because you're waiting for some bugs to be patched out of another game...?

Loading times, of saves have definitely got slower in act 3. I may have to find a way to have the saves on the nvme not the normal SSD.
I did the underdark, skipped the mountain pass, only picked one way through act2, and act 3 I've left loads of stuff undone and am basically at the level cap. It's definitely a game for replays.
Act 3 the structure changes more. Baldur's Gate is so dense, there appears to be loads of tiny threads to follow and look into. So the plot is less connected up but in a way that feels like D&D in a bustling city. Pretty sure you could just mainline straight to the main bosses the instant you get there though.

Haven't done too much exploring tbh, but will try and find her shortly. Went for a wander into a swamp, found an OP frog and an old lady and then came back and been killing goblins for what feels like 12 hours now. Accidentally left their castle thing by the front door and agro'd everything within a mile it seems so.. Reloading again..

Haha that fight is a bastard if you stumble into it, there is some good prep work you can do that makes it much easier. I've done that on my second save and it was much easier.
The big bastard was the biggest problem as he one shotted one of my damage dealers and killed them again every time I got them back up. Think we ended up with with the gith lady as the only character alive.

I decided to get into this. Never really played this type of RPG before and I’m hugely intimidated by the amount of options before I even do anything. But I’m bolstered with new confidence for this sort of thing after my experiences with Elden Ring so I’m in for a penny.
I’m going to take my usual approach and do a test run character for a few hours just to get a sense of how it all works and not worry about fucking it all up.

You will be fine, things will go wrong but that's half the fun sometimes.
I wasn't prepared for someone leaving my party when I did something hideously evil though and had to reload as I need them on that particular run through. After I gave it some thought she was totally right to leave given what I had just done as well.

Hard as it can be sometimes, I'd say just relax and go with the flow, and don't worry too much about missing things.

@ kal Don't stress about character creation and early decisions. You can change all of it later if you have any regrets, so just make something you think you'll like and try it out.

I'm towards the end of Act 2 (I think) and there's stuff that I completely missed out on from the first area, and I very nearly missed out on old dead dude that is actually kind of important for your camp. I now can't go back and do that either. You also don't have the choice of going off and grinding to level up if you hit a difficulty spike and would benefit from levelling up.
So yeah: relax and go with the flow but *explore*.

Yeah sure, thats fair. In my mind I didn't link relaxing with mainlining or sticking to the critical path. Just that the liklihood for a game this big is that you're going to miss things and it can sometimes be less stressful just to accept and enjoy the experience your choices and die rolls lay out.
I'm still pottering around in act 1, so I havent experienced any real choice regret. I guess incremental saving can also help if you really end up somewhere you're not happy with.

Yeah, I'm not that fussed about missing out on side quests generally in games. Gives me something to do for my next* playthrough innit? However, I feel this game does blur a the distinction between "side" quests and the main narrative. There stuff you can completely walk past and miss that can have a significant impact on how the "main" story unfolds, and you can make life a lot harder for yourself without them.
(* I'm half tempted to have a start second playthrough already and run that in parallel, with a different character)

I hadn't actually thought about what would happen if you missed Withers. Wonder if he comes along another way.

I think my current play through is fucked, act 2 or thereabouts. Got to the boss battle with Oliver to lift the curse, and though I can breeze through that pretty easily, as soon as it’s done everyone basically dies from the shadow curse of the area. Can’t fast travel, can’t rest, and the only safe area has someone in the way that triggers a cutscene where most of my party becomes undead.
It seems I should be able to counter the worst of the shadow curse with a moon lantern, but googling how to fix one reveals that the quest to get a repaired one, I can’t start that quest because the Last Light Inn got massacred by that winged dude and literally everyone is dead.
