Right, it's working now despite you lot. Still displays a big timer declaring four-ish hours to go.
Anyway, just fired it up quickly to fuck about with the menus and see how it runs, but the game railroads you into a narrative intro like Horizon 5. What happened to choosing to start a game?

Get the fuck off the game you. It's not for people actually in NZ.

I'll just go back to my sheep shearing and rugby then. And we'll keep all our dairy products from now on as well.

Seventeen lambs lashed together with number 8 wire put out more kWh than your namby-pamby Mercedes AMG.

Frog's in bed so he can't stop me from playing.
Anyone else on PC? Performance seems a bit unpredictable.

I'll be downloading it once I get home, so... I'll let you know how it performs in 2 days once it's finished.
Currently fighting the urge to buy a wheel.

I'm kinda glad I don't have the space for a wheel setup. Saves me money. All the more reason for you to get one ekz. You can lord it over me and all the other pad paupers.
So I'm using DF's 'optimised mid-range' settings and get 70+ fps on the benchmark tool. Start a race and get a fluctuating 45-60 fps. Run the benchmark again and it's 40 fps. Weird.

I really can’t find the option to skip practice laps in the career mode.
I’d also like to be able to change between cars in the same class between races in a series like I could on Horizon. 6 plus races plus multiple practice laps before each race is a long time to be stuck in one car.
That said foibles aside I’m having a great time. I particularly like playing around with the weather and lighting settings - bought a new car and took it for a test drive using Silverstone, sunrise, looming clouds. Amazing visuals.
Had a go with the full visuals mode on Series X last night and I won’t be going back. Performance RT is where it’s at here.

I think you have to actually start the practice session and there's an option to skip it if you press start then. Couldn't find a way to do it before then, which seems bonkers.

As I never got on with the handling in 7 I didn’t play it much, so the practice laps are a must for me to learn the tracks

Are you thermal throttling by chance? Or is it only this game that's got hippy dippy performance degradation?

I get stable 60fps in Cyberpunk and F1 '23, 80fps in Horizon 5. Starfield was a bit ropey though. Google suggests that others are having inconsistent performance.

Well if CP2077 is consistent I'd be hesitant to say it's your laptop. I'm sure there'll be driver and/or game updates soon enough to help address it.

The DF video did say that for some inexplicable reason the pc version is primarily single threaded and is ultimately quite CPU bound as well as having to restart the game after changing settings as it does cause bugs if you don't.

The IGN review surprised me when they thought GT7 looks better overall, despite FM having some impressive moments. I thought the RT would be doing a lot of work but it can look very flat still.

Shit shit. In my head i'm comparing it to Horizon. I know they're different games but I at least expected it to look as good as that. I'm only playing on a 3070 but struggling to get anywhere near 60fps playing at 1440p.

The IGN review surprised me when they thought GT7 looks better overall, despite FM having some impressive moments. I thought the RT would be doing a lot of work but it can look very flat still. I've been looking at a fair few comparisons, and both games have their strengths. GT7 seems to exaggerate a lot of its colours and effects, which is more pleasing to my eye. I think the car models are better, in terms of geometry, interiors especially. Of course, GT7 has the luxury of most of its track not supporting dynamic time of day and weather, but that's not necessarily a bad compromise. I do think GT7's car models 'pop' out of the scene more due to the lighting, meaning sometimes cars don't look like they're grounded in the scene properly. Forza's colours are very muted in comparison, and overall they've gone for a very low contrast, washed out look, which I'm not a massive fan of. However, cars appear more grounded in the scene (possibly due to ray-traced ambient occlusion) as if they exist in the same world as the scenery. Trackside details are also better and more abundant, as well as weather effects. For example, rain in GT7 is barely noticeable, but in Forza a rainstorm is all-encompassing. Hard to say which is the best. GT7 have gone all in on the car models and crowd-pleasing lighting, whereas Forza have gone for a more balanced, organic approach to everything.

I was hugely disappointed with GT7’s scope and thus the game overall, but, half an hour in to this oh my word am I missing the PS5 gamepad. Forza feels absolutely dead in comparison, there were so many little ground/tyre/traction details coming through to your hands in GT, feel like I’m driving wearing welding gloves here

Why, yes, I will accept a 0.5 second penalty for accidentally ramming 3 opponents off the track and going from 6th to 3rd, thanks

Yeah, same here. The Xbox pad feels so Rumble 1.0 in comparison, just on/off buzzing, no nuance at all.

I'm a bit weirded out by the segment time in practice laps that changes from red to green in real time according to whether you're faster or slower than last time. I keep going into a segment, braking when I want to, seeing it turn red, and going "shit, better ease off the brakes"... then going off the track or taking a corner badly. It might be useful if I can learn when to ignore it, but right now I can't decide if it's genius or Really Bloody Distracting Actually.

Not sure if gt7 online has improved much since I last played but I have been having more fun on the forza multiplayer so far . Probably because I didn’t have to get 400 cafe menus before I could unlock it.
Forza looks really good on the chase cam but the cockpit views aren’t as good as gt7
