It doesn't feel remotely dated to me. Having said that, I was just recently playing Bioshock Infinite, so that is hardly a modern comparison. Now I feel old.
I'd have said Bioshock was modern.
Haven't gotten to Infinite yet... sigh.

I thought Bioshock Infinite was a pompous slog. The first game was great, the second game good. Some aspects of the story in Infinite were good, I liked the atypical ending, but the gameplay and design didn’t do a thing for me and the story was not remotely up there with the first game.

I'm only part way through Infinite and for me it has been mostly a bin diving simulator, but it has a fantastic world.
As a game though, its long way behind Metroid.

I got the final suit upgrade! I died to the big pirate once, but didn't really mind, because... get this... they put a save room BEFORE the boss. Not after. What a novel concept!
The new suit looks very cool, but doesn't really seem to do anything? I guess I can walk through the blue stuff now, but I was hoping for a cool traversal ability or something. Oh well.
Nfi what to do now. I guess get all the artifact things, is that what you're supposed to do?

I think you take less damage with each suit upgrade, too.

Yeah, it's an artifacts run after you've got the last suit upgrade. And yeah, you take less damage with it, can walk through phazon and it looks cool.

Re: save points. I like how this is not as brutal as Dark Souls, but still enough to get proper nervous when trying to find the next (or previous) save point. I got the thermal visor yesterday and it felt really tense to fight my way back to the save point in the dark (not sure if needed, but I'm adding spoilers just in case) Also, while I can recall little bits and pieces, it's been so long since I played this on the GC that I have no idea what will happen next. Joy!

All upgrades are mentioned in detail in the logbook. There is something added along side the final suit upgrade that is worth knowing.

Ok, finished it now.
It was pretty good overall. But maybe it's one of those "you had to be there" kinds of things, because I didn't think it was an absolute masterpiece.
Like, I can obviously see how massively influential this series has been, and can see how amazing this would have been at the time. But it is not that time anymore, and the past couple of decades have brought improvements to the genre that I really missed here. For me it doesn't feel timeless in the ways that your Marios and Zeldas do.
Anyway, it's still an 8/10, probably better than Halo.

Like 75 and 80ish, I think? Do you get something for grabbing/scanning everything?

Ban plz.
I can definitely see it not appealing as much to a newcomer today if you don't have those fond memories of no-lifing it one Christmas on your new purple GameCube and CRT.

Like 75 and 80ish, I think? Do you get something for grabbing/scanning everything? 1st extra scene in the ending for 75% items. 2nd extra scene in the ending for 100% items.
100% scans in a playthrough just get you access to the art galleries.

Cos I feel like Prime wasn't that influential. It feels like one of those evolutionary branches that kinda died off.
I always wanted more Prime style games, and could find almost none.

I dunno, I think 3d Metroidvanias are a thing. (though admittedly not nearly as much of a thing as the 2d ones are)

A vague similarity is Arkham Asylum. But I can't think of many others.

Darksiders was in that same sort of vein.

Supraland. I wouldn't classify it as an evolution of Metroid Prime, it's more of a genre mix with stronger emphasis on puzzles than combat, but still it is a first person game with very strong metroidvania elements

Darksiders was in that same sort of vein. I haven't played it, but I always thought it was more of a Zelda like.
Then again, 3d zelda isn't that far from 3d metroid I guess.

Anyway, it's still an 8/10, probably better than Halo. Memories of the time tell me that there was plenty of robust discussion* on the forum about whether it was as good/better than Halo, that MP was a shit FPS, and the fans claiming it was First Person Adventure, not a shooter. Because of all the exploration and scanning. Shooting wasn't the primary aim of the game. *arguments

I don't actually have an opinion about whether it's better than Halo, just doing the meme.

In other news, I've made some small progress - got missiles and morph ball. Based on the fact that I failed to complete this last time I feel like I should switch to dirty cheating lamer Casual mode. Anyone know if it's possible? Or do I need to restart with a new save? (Switch is downstairs and it's less effort to type that to walk downstairs!)

Difficulty selection is only available on beginning the game.
Finished my replay yesterday. had to cave and look up a guide for the last 5-6 missile upgrades. More or less everything else I had remembered. I was down to my last HP bar on the final boss.

I thought I heard it could be changed on the fly, but I couldn't find a way to do it.
I'm nearing the end of the game now. It's taken me around 11 hours, because I have been stopping to gawk at everything, but I've apparently only collected 66% of the items. I'm shocked. I swear I'm pretty much done for secrets on Tallon, Chozo Ruins, Magmoor Caverns and Phendrana Drifts, but apparently not...

I wish the difficulty could have been changed on the fly, it would have helped with the various frustrating bits. But no, I don't think you can.

I've started again on casual. I was only 1h28 in so it doesn't feel like a massive loss. Plus I should get through the first bits quicker as I know what's coming.
Are there many scans that are missable? This is reminding me of Horizon ZD and FW where you need to scan all machines, and at least one only shows up in a story mission.
