To start with just try to get a decent run on each level to unlock the next one. On the third one grab the map and then you can go back and start cleaning up collectibles on each level. Definitely go back to the first one asap with the map to unlock a secret character.
Have a look through the unlocks menu to get an idea for next goals. It's often worth considering how many you can cross off in a single run. It can be overwhelming at first, but you'll soon whittle the list down.

Is the library an easier map? I also had my best run on there after 2 or 3 hours of not being able to get much beyond 10 minutes and actually looked like I might get the full 30 mins. The run came to abrupt end with the sensory overload of getting an evolution of the runetracer and gold fever simulataneously.

Get more gold and buy those upgrades while getting some of the easy unlocks from the menu, last x minutes with a character or evolving each weapon with the right items.

Runetracer in a confined space is devastating, and one of the most powerful weapons in the game too. |

Just guessing, but I feel like the library being a tighter space forces you to play more aggressively and xp drops are more compressed, so you're more likely to quickly accrue xp and see the high level weapons and evolutions needed to beat it. That's how it worked for me, anyway. |

The bonus stage is a bit shit, 15 minutes of doing very little. Unless it has some purpose later they should just bin it.

Moonglow? That one actually does have a purpose later on  I love it personally. Lets you easily get evolutions without any RNG. |

I suppose it's useful for testing weapons, developing builds, analysing game mechanics etc. if you want to dive deeper. Like "target practice" in Borderlands games or something like that.

Not sure it is though as you don't find out if a build is decent until you see if it holds back a massive enemy surge. Static enemies just don't have the same effect.

Yeah of course that's the ultimate test, but it could be very helpful in getting a thorough understanding of how everything works if you want to go "professional". A practice target in Borderlands is certainly not the final test either but it's incredibly useful.

Had managed to evolve the whip (which is awesome). Now I need to check what I need to do to evolve some of the other weapons, as I think I am missing some of them. |

The drip feed of new weapons and passive abilities (and their evolutions) keeps going for ages. Fucking love this game but it's taken over all my free time now it's also on Android.

There's a hidden buff item in the Moonspell DLC where the game actually starts playing you. It's actually quite remarkable
