Funnily enough, I just started a new play through of this yesterday.
I actually think it looks pretty good still and I’ve had no glitches or frame rate issues yet.
Anyone know if the DLCs are worth purchasing?

I don't think the DLCs are great, imo not worth it except for completionism and/or if the base game isn't enough content. I wouldn't say they're terrible (except for an excruciatingly tedious puzzle section in Far Harbor), but I definitely had less fun with them than with the base game. Not as worthwhile as Skyrim's DLCs.

I thought this was already 60fps on Series X thanks to frame rate boost. I mean, it's good to have native support but on the flip side with these things, it means I can no longer run it from external SSD as native apps tend to only work on the internal drive.

Personally loved the DLC, both Far Harbour & Nuka World.
Nuka World from memory is a bit more challenging so I would save that until later in the game.

Fallout 76 is arguably the better game in pretty much every way now. It has an SP campaign, side quests and all the other stuff in FO4, but also MP and one of the nicest player bases you could ever meet. Downsides are VATs work less effectively, smallish inventory, and MP itself if you aren't into it. I can say absolutely certainly though, as someone who was once positive it couldn't work as a MP game (and who experienced how utterly crap it was at launch), it really does, albeit with all the same jank and occasional ugliness of the others in the series. A dozen players in everything from power armour to dinner jackets, blazing away with lasers, flamers, plasma and miniguns at a single massive boss is something to see. Just as an alternative

I played through 76 vanilla and 76 again up to the update before the most recent and it really is night and day in difference. I think I'd agree now that it is the better game.
Though playing Fallout 3 now made me realise they are both pretty shit compared to it for atmosphere alone.

Looks amazing at 60fps too, transformed.

It does look better than it did on the PSplus streaming and 52 hours in I've not had any freezes or anything so I won't complain.

Can you just play Fallout 76 as a single player game then?
I.e, ignore the multiplayer, wander the land and pick up side quests in the same way you would in previous titles?

There are max 24 players on a map, which is roughly the same size as FO4 I think, so encounters are rare in the wild, and you can see where others are on the map if you want to avoid. Players congregate for missions, events, places with vendors, and at each others homes, which you can build pretty much anywhere. It does a great job of allowing all levels to play together too, once you've got going.

I was like, finally! It must have been coming, but good to have it confirmed. Hopefully the update actually works and isn’t just a shitshow of new bugs that never get addressed.

Go on then – to those in the know:
My first Fallout was 3, and I absolutely fell in love with it, coming out of my first Elder Scrolls, being Oblivion. I completed it, and enjoyed every minute.
I got partway through Fallout 4 but never finished it. Only recently tried New Vegas, which almost everyone seems to think is the "best". It's great, but I'm not sure it's really grabbed me in the way 3 did.
I've bobbed in and out of Shelter, and never tried 76.
Would I get more joy out of starting a brand new session of 3, which has hitherto been my favourite, or something else?

Depends what you are after I think. There is nothing else in the series like FO3 I don't think, it is the only one that maintains that sense of a genuine apocalyptic wasteland, at least for a time. NV, 4 and 76 are all more like adventures in a wasteland rather than just surviving it. In all though, once you reach a certain point you're a living avatar of death with 6 ways to kill everything, and a locker with 500 more guns and 8 million grenades in it, just in case, and largely invulnerable. 76 is the only multiplayer, so if you like the idea of for instance taking a team to run a mission to launch a nuke, which then triggers a boss battle which 15 other wanderers come and assist with in a psychedelic lightshow of lasers and explosions, that would be the one for you. NV is 3 with arguably better story but less atmosphere. 4 and 76 are very similar, just SP v MP. Both have base building, you can get very inventive in 76, build anywhere. 76 does continue to have new content added. Of customary Bethesda unevenness. Joy and pain

I’ll have a think…

No probs They fixed a bug recently, which had been in 76 for years, whereby a specific holotape got stuck in inventory. Similar seen in all the other games. You can finally drop this tape, well done Bethesda. However, when you log in next time, it's back and needs dropping again. So even though MS paid all those billions, Bethesda haven't changed atall

I too loved 3, there's not many games I bother with any DLC but no hesitations on that one. I've literally just started 4 (though mainly as I only have a PS4 in my living room (the sprogs have the Xbox One's)), as you say everyone (well the internet collectively) seems to say Vegas is the best but I recall that really didn't grab me, I have to say 4 isn't exactly grabbing me but it was £1 and I'm still kinda enjoying the trudging around, discovering new places and collecting stuff. But I think actually if I'd had a choice I'd say go with 3. I much prefer the HUD in 3 and you don't have to mess about with building any bases crap.

Remove the HUD for some extra spice as that's what I've done here, hence 60 hours and only at the arrival of Enclave.

3 and 76 are the clear extremes. 3 has that stunning eerie reveal when you first leave the vault, and retains at least some sense of danger (until you get all the best gear), where even a single enemy can be a threat.
In 76, there is a mission called Radiation Rumble (amongst many similar), where for 10 minutes a dozen players fire non stop into wave after wave of glowing ghouls, deathclaws and other gribblies, it is brilliant fun and unlike anything in the other games, but the very far end of the scale from the original.

I don't get the New Vegas hype either. Didn't do anything for me the few times I've tried to get it going. But no Obsidian game has really done so.

Just FYI incase anyone missed it - If you're on PC, Fallout 3 is free on Epic for the next day or two.

If they up the number of mod plugins it can support, I might just end up playing settlement mode for another few years.

I’d like to see them do modern remakes of 1 and 2, but hand it over to Obsidian, because Bethesda are awful.
