I enjoyed it about as much as 3. If you ignore the base building nonsense there's some good wasteland looting to be had.
NV is miles better, though.

I really hate it, streamlined everything, everything solved by go here kill this and no real memorable locations.

Hot take - Fallout 76 is a better single player Fallout than 4.

You have a German Shepherd best friend in 4. All your complaints are invalid.
(But base building is crap)

This. It was balls. 3 & NV lived long in the brain 4 didn't really have the quality of quests or places, but was ok for exploring & looting, just never found much that was as memorable as some stuff in the previous two. I'm not even going to start on the aberation of base building.

Surely there can't be anything as bad as Little Lamplight in it though
The kid voicing Zip or whatever is literally tripping over his lines and they're all wankers apart from Knock Knock. She's cool

Loved 4, well apart from the base building as that was crap. Personally preferred it to 3 and NV. I’ve felt that each game improved on the last. Opinions hey

Fallout 4 was ok, it just couldn’t live up to expectations.
FO3 and NV were incredible, especially if you were a console gamer experiencing that kind of open world for the first time. 4 was exactly what you’d expect from a team iterating on the previous game- better graphics, some extra game mechanics, same basic gameplay loop. It didn’t hold up because the storytelling wasn’t as good (particularly the lack of environmental set pieces that characterised the earlier games), and the base building was essentially an extra real-time strategy game that no-one had asked for.
I still sunk dozens of hours into it, but I didn’t rinse all the DLC like I did with 3 and NV. The huge world isn’t worth a damn if the story doesn’t pull you through it. Makes me a bit worried for Starfield.

4 just felt so skin deep compared to NV let alone 3, it had some interesting missions but after playing something like Witcher 3 it just came across as Bethesda were very much stuck in the past design wise.

It's a time sink kind of game, it's fine if you enjoy the wandering/scavenging/looting/mild action/crafting/fucking around gameplay loop. But if you want depth, narrative, characters, excitement, tension, boy you're looking in the wrong place.

Yeah, the modern Fallout games are like Elder Scrolls games to me. New Vegas aside, I couldn’t really give a shit about the storyline in any of them. It’s all about the exploration, the cool stuff to find and the experience, which I think Bethesda nail better than anyone else.

I never cared much for the storyline in Fallout 4, but settlement mode with mods is what's kept me playing it more than anything.

Similar, because I loved building and imposing on the world my fun little themed settlements. It was always fun rocking up to the lighthouse/coastguard base up in the NE, or down to the feral trapper guys outside the Glowing Sea. I'd always thought about returning with mods for a full Costner/Postman/Minutemen playthrough, but never had time.
Hell, wandering around and hearing a tremendous ruckus, only to find it was a gaggle of my caravans waging WW3 on the locals was always fun.

Next time I get back to it, I'm going to use one of the mods that renders Spectacle Island completely flat and build a proper little city. EDIT: Also fun, build an absolutely massive array of defenses and then use the console to spawn in 100 enemies or more to test them. Absolute carnage.
EDIT 2:
This is a previous build in Sanctuary:

Has anyone jumped back into Fallout 76 after it's awful launch? Did they make it any more interesting in the years that followed?

played it last year for a bit, much better than it was, worth a dip in on game pass or £8 on sale fairly regular (on pc at least)
think I prefer it over fo4 now but ultimately still a bit pants

You’d assume it to be a different team than Starfield but I guess they’re understandably focussing their messaging on the game no one owns yet rather than the game everyone owns already. Is the Fallout 4 upgrade meant to be out late this year? I’m not sure anyone knows.

Saw something earlier on twitter that I can't be bothered to go and look for, but someone messaged Hines about it a couple of weeks back. He basically said 'You might not have noticed, but we're a bit fucking busy right now. When we're a bit less busy and have something to tell you, we will. Until then fuck off and stop asking stupid fucking questions.'

I’ve been going through the ps plus game catalog, and had my eye on this next as it seemed to review really well. Comments in here seem contrary to that though.
I might give it a go anyway, but it seems like a game I’d start and never finish anyway.

There’s stuff about it that’s really great, and stuff about it that’s deeply dissatisfying, but it’s very playable. You could copy-paste that review onto pretty much any Bethesda RPG really.

I played fallout 3 years ago when it came out and real enjoyed it, but have not played one since. I’ll give it a try. I’m guessing I’ll enjoy it then give up about half way through. Like every other game I play nowadays.

It's alright and I'll continue dipping in every now and again but why oh why is there no cross save support. Wanted to try in on the pc but nothing! It's a persistent online game FFS

Commonwealth is massive and has loads of content in it. Automation dlc actually adss to the base game in an interesting way but far harbour and nuka world are self contained excursions. I've reinstalled on pc recently and still love it. Needs mods on pc though to fix the loading
