I also have issues with the art. Mainly it's that almost everyone is wearing bulky costumes which mask the animations making all moves look a bit samey.
And yeah, the lighting is weird. It's too dark and has too many flashy visual effects.

Next year?? Sake, thought it was this year. Nah mate, fighting game devs try not to release games close to each other as it ultimately leads to cannibalisation of the user base so they like to give each other a wide berth. So this year it's SF6 and MK12. To be super pedantic here, they haven’t actually given a release date at all - but it’s safe to assume it’s 2024 at the earliest because of that.

And here is Jack-8, the last character we’ve seen previously:
The question now is whether we see Jun (who has so far only appeared in the story trailer) or any new reveals at all until after Evo Japan?

How long's it been, 20 years? If you don’t count Tag (1999 and 2011), Tekken 2 was a 1995 release, so closer to 30.

We should definitely count tag and tag 2. Please, let’s count tag and tag 2.
Evo Japan is this weekend. Apart from a bunch of fighting game goodness, it is also the first public test of tekken 8 - so there should be a bunch of actual match footage and impressions from people.

Out of nowhere; here’s Ling Xiaoyu!
Looking very cool. There goes my theory that the space ninja is next heh.
Edit: looks like Namco have released a ton of match footage and invited some folks to try it out. First impressions are very very good, apparently!

Ohh - new announcements at Evo Japan. Asuka and “The Grandmaster Of Drip” Leeroy Smith.
Both looking good. Asuka is especially adorable this time round.

He’s probably one of my favourite new characters from 7. Both him and Lydia are excellent imo. The others.. I could take or leave.

Watch them announce Akuma and then hear the sound of 100000 tekken fans crying at once.

Lili looks class. I know Tekken players hate how cheap she can be but she looks good there. Now will Lucky Chloe or Alisa be in the game is the bigger question

Maybe its because Ive only watched the trailers, maybe its because Im getting old but (and I know restraint was never Tekkens strong point) but I absolutely hate the sound design on this one.
Every punch is an explosion, the announcer and players all screaming at each other, the terrible late 90s techno. Its just as grating as fuck.

I agree about sound effects and graphics, but the music... yeah it's bad but it's a million times better than the Tekken 7 soundtrack. It's only been a single track so far though.

I don't mean the quality of the graphics, I mean the overload with flashy special effects. Similar to what Nick said about the sound effects, although I find the VFX worse because they make it harder to see what's happening and what the opponent is doing. My complaint is that I think they're just trying to increase the spectacle for the sake of it, to the detriment of gameplay.
edit: not that this started with Tekken 8, I just think it takes it to the next level. One thing that annoys me in T7 is that it's too offence-heavy and aggressive. In a typical T5 match there's much more defence and movement in all directions--but apparently that wasn't exciting enough to watch in esports, so in T7 (haven't played T6, no idea about that) they reduced that.
In some movies/TV shows, you see a fight where they chain together the fighters by their arm so that they can't back off. T7 feels a bit like that. Apparently that makes it more exciting to watch, but I don't care about watching, I only care about playing and I miss the greater freedom of movement and defence in T5.
So when they said T8 will be much more aggressive, that's taking it even further in that direction. I guess it makes sense from a viewership and profit point of view, but I hate it gameplay-wise. And I see all the flashy effects, cutscenes, camera movement and whatnot in the same vein, and it bugs me. I want more gameplay and less spectacle. But I'm also an old fart.

For what it’s worth, everyone who has had hands on with the game say it looks spectacular - in fact some of them say that the trailers make it look far worse than it is (with the multiple zooms / flashes etc).
I do get what you’re saying about T7 and yes from Namcos perspective they want a spectacle on their hands. Even with the reduced defensive movement, top level T7 can still be a war of small pokes rather than flashy combos and for the majority that’s just not exciting. I suppose T8 is an attempt to make it more dynamic and encourage riskier play, leading to more excitement.
Personally I think it remains to be seen whether they truly catch the casual audience, but SF6 is delivering a best in class lesson on how to teach a fighting game and I hope Tekken follows suit - partially because it’s just much much harder than street fighter.

It’s the sneering TKD biker Hwoarang!
I prefer his look here to T7 - less biker, more actual TKD person. Not sure about the face though.

He looks great. Was alway a Hwoarang fan. Though I basically like any fighting game character when you can identify their fighting style straight away.
