I like the idea of Web3, where only landowners get to vote

It's bang on the money.
The stories that get pumped out about Crypto and NFTs being the gateway to some egalitarian future is pure marketing.
Only the other day there was a run of articles on tech staff abandoning big tech companies to join Web3 startups.
It's nothing to do with being a noble cause, all these start ups are funded by massive VC's and everyone is in it to make as much money as possible before it all collapses.

It's good to see him calling it out, bit odd given how he's super gay for Bitcoin but hey maybe him and Musk can form a tag team and live stream a fights between tech bros.

Feels the same as 2017/18 when ICO's were all the rage and people were willing to pump millions in to under-developed nothing coins/scams in the hope they'd pump after launching.

I think he's pissed off that he don't get to play with the big VCs. Best case scenario is he genuinely believed all the crap that crypto bros are blogging, only to have the veil pulled from his eyes when no one wanted to pump his scheme.

I still find the idea that we'll have NFT items in one game that you can transfer to another uttey daft thinking. There's no reason for the devs to support this when they can make more by either making their own NFTs or even just using traditional micro-transactions.
At best you might be able to transfer items between games that are published by a single publisher, or as occasional crossovers, but there already exists perfectly valid centralised databases that can allow this.
There's no real long term benefit to the publisher, and the only reason a few publishers are jumping onboard now is because they can rake in cash by jumping on the buzzwords.

Most people that pump crypto don't know much about technology. Those that do, and still pump, only care about making money, so they turn a blind eye to how stupid it all is.

Well it's all a big MLM isn't it, the game is to make your own crypto/scam so you can be at the top of the pyramid while all the other suckers pile in hoping for a whiff

Looks like Square Enix are also getting into the Blockchain and NFT game, cue a really weird letter that shows utter contempt for their customers who 'play games to have fun'.
Also love the typical crypto bro comments on this thread maintaining it will make developers richer, get better working conditions and gamers will have more control. It's all so fucking transparent.

The letter does addresses the point DrHickman raises earlier - if you can link nfts to 3rd party content, either mods or skins (not the fighty types) etc, then nfs provide a way to reward the developers of said mods without the company having to get involved, and still take a cut of the purchase fees.

But the small print that everyone misses is that the digital storefront that exists to keep track of said digital purchase lasts only as long as the publisher wants it to. Anyone who thinks a massive corporation wants to the developer and user with power and money is high on the fumes of the pyramid scheme under their noses.

The whole idea of web 3 being decentralised is a fantasy, it will just be in the hands of fucking venture capitalists. Not sure if that's actually any better than it being in the hands of a few big tech companies.

I much prefer the internet to be in the hand of giant companies with boards and shareholders than in the hands of individual multi billionaires answerable to absolutely no one but their own ego.

I might be a bit drunk but the whole web 3 proposition, and blockchains and NFTs and all that jazz, is just feeling quite Ayn Randy.

The rise of NFTs seems similar to the Retro gaming grading system - a lot of noise, and big money being spent by the same people selling to each other to bump the prices up.
edit - Or selling to themselves.

Thats exactly what it is. A handful of speculators have spunked a fortune to corner the market and now their job is to convince everyone else what they bought is worth something.

Turns out a friend of mine has built a couple of mining rigs for Ethereum. I still like him and consider him a friend but I have to admit I do think slightly less of him now.

I feel that way about so many things. I actually think we've seen the best the internet has to offer; it feels like the internet and gaming is just going to become and more commodified as the VCs get their claws into. That's certainly their intention anyway.

Recently or did he build them a while ago? I probably would've years ago if I had a garage or somewhere out of the way to shove a couple of machines. Sod doing it today, though. I would've carried on mining bitcoin back in the day come to think of it. Seem to remember thinking "two months to mine a full coin is a waste, I might as well just sell this stuff while I'm ahead."
