Had a fairly awful string of disconnects last week that really put me off the game. Seemed to work better when I switched to homeplugs though, so at least it's the kick up the arse I needed to finally put some proper cabling in for my consoles.
Also seemed to matchmake with ridiculously bad teams in salmon run and had a string of failures in that (even wiped on the first round) It's an absolutely cracking game when it's not frustrating the shit out of me.

The Girl finished the campaign this afternoon. First one she’s completed with no help *wipes tear away*. Although if the DLC is as hard as the octo expansion that may change. He finished it this weekend, no help (which is a good job as I haven't got a clue). All collectables and everything.

Pro has both "skill" based matchmaking and lobby weapon balancing, ie it tries to match effective ranges of weapons in teams so you don't get 4 aerosprays against 4 snipers. Open has neither.
The SBMM side didn't really work though because 58% of people picked Gear so MM took a while if you were on that team and it was just throwing anyone together it seemed. Pro was near unplayable for me. I'd be at Gear Champ and the other team were like, Fun Ruler +9.

I've been out of action with covid the past few days, and if you've been following my updates in the poo thread been having a Splatfest of my own, but I did manage a couple of games yesterday afternoon.
I was on gear too! (good choice). Matchmaking did seem to take ages. Did we win then?

Done some quality Salmon running tonight - got 126 eggs in one run and then in another killed Cohozuna at +60 on Eggsecutive VP rank.

Gah. My Wifi is horrifically unstable at the moment, so I can't really play online right now. Haven't even touched Salmon Run yet.
I can't wait until I have moved.

I genuinely don't understand clam blitz. People genuinely don't actually try to win?

I barely understand how to play it. I feel its a mode specifically for teams of 4 that are in a group chat. Without any comms you could be seriously disadvantaged.
If I play it, I tend to play defensively or assisting others.

I'm able to play this game with quite a stable connetion now, but still have the occasional game end early. A shame as it can bring a bice run of games to an abrupt halt.
Anyone else having such issues still, or just me?

Think I'm done with this game. I don't get why this far after launch and losing most matches I still get matched against S+ players in 100% of games, and get spawn camped to hell and back. God it's infuriating.

I think the new maps are most prone to spawn camping. They aren't particularly well balanced. Also, now you can join friends easily, I'm seeing a lot of squads of friends, which makes things so much harder.

Had a game last night in which the opposition managed over 30 splats as a team. My team had about 7, but we still won. Scrappy, but its the painting that matters most.
It helped that their base wasn't fully painted, but we timed our assault perfectly. Got a wipeout in the last 30 seconds and pushed them back into their own half.

It took 3 attempts, but I was actually on the winning team for a Splatfest! I dipped in and out all weekend and, for the most part, loved it.
Now I'm back to my best with the bucket, I've learned to appreciate all of the new maps. Mainly because they suit the bucket rather well, but also because they accommodate all the new weapons rather well too. I can also see how some of the older maps might hinder a few of the specials, with high walls and narrow corridors.
Its still early days, but I think this could be the best of the 3 games in regards to the online play. Its even more aggressive than Splatoon 2, but its even more important to figure out which parts of the map need to be held in order to defend your base and its even more important to know when to push as there are a few bottle knecks on the new maps. I know Splatoon 2 had strategy in gameplay, but it feels heightened here on a lot of the new maps.

I have hated splatfests since the first one of the original game.
"Hey, we're removing all the actual good modes from the game for a weekend, fuck you"

Thats always a downer. They could easily support them on the side. Or turn those into winning splatfest categories. Knowing Nintendo, it may be a feature in 5 years time!

They should have a Turf splat fest playlist and an objective splatfest playlist. Job done.

The problem is people spending ages fully painting the base right at the start of the match. You can get away with it if your 3 teammates can hold their own at mid, but if you cede control of mid super early in the match painting your base ain't gonna do much if you're getting spawn trapped the rest of the game and constantly trying to stop people making inroads at the base. Best approach is generally to paint what you can on your first life and then fill in gaps on subsequent spawns.
Not that TW is any good or worth stategising in anyways, the ranked modes are where the fun is.

You would hate playing with me! I'm terrible for wanting to paint the base first.
But, having said that, I also don't get splatted a lot. I'm not saying I'm great, but on average I get splatted once or twice per match. I can go a fair few games without being splatted at all, so I try to cover the base early. Saves me worrying about it later.
I'm not an overly aggressive player. I prefer holding ground and making small pushes when the team are all together. I really only go for splats if I'm confident I have an advantage.
I almost always win the award for number base painter and squid jump point.

Reading that back, I should probably consider using the mini gun more.

Heavy Splatling is great for that sort of role, you kinda of stay on the edge of mid stopping the other team from passing through. Chuck on a bunch of run speed up and zip around.

I'm finding matches alot more aggressive and frantic than Splatoon 2.
Not really enjoying it as much either. Maybe I'm a bit splatooned out.

They're fine for the ranked modes because most of them gain a few extra flanking routes, but this game's maps are basically one giant chokepoint for the most part.

Yeah, the maps have changed the feel of the game a lot. I do miss the classics like Walleye Warehouse. Such a different experience.
I'm sure they'll be tweaking maps for the mext two years, much like with Splatoon 2, but whether or not thats for the better, who knows?

I reckon they tweaked them for the worse already judging how scorch gorge changed from the original trailer Walleye is weird, because Hammerhead Bridge is very similar, just... worse. Almost the same layout, but the raised entrance to mid on the left side is designed in a way that makes it easier to trap people trying to use it and the right entrance to mid just doesn't exist in Turf War and Splat Zones.

This is why I like playing Splatling. I'm like a wall behind my team protecting them from people in front and stopping others from pushing up to us.

Those are some impressive numbers. Yeah, I briefly dabbled with the minigun on Splatoon 2, but Thingy and Jono were too good for me to reasonably get good with it. Haha
I might give it a go this evening. I've got plenty of tickets saved up.

What is the difference between a gold and silver award at the end of a round. You can be number 1 for something, but can get either type of award.
Also, took me a lifetime to realise you can quick jump from spawn. You don't even need to fire down to the map itself before hand. Its so much quicker.

I took losing my rank up battle very personally so endeavoured to try again as quickly as possible: Went 26-2 in one game lol.
