D2 resurrected beta out, watch a participating twitch streamer for a couple of hours for access, unless you are a weirdo and like to preorder games. Played an hour or so, plays well enough, it's a lick of paint and a few qol tweaks (you can reset skill points, not sure that needed adding). Definately have a look if you've never played it anyway.

Playing the beta tonight after getting access earlier on Twitch. It is very much just Diablo II with updated graphics, which is all I want really.

Have you tried playing it with a controller?

Have you tried playing it with a controller? I haven't yet but I've heard streamers saying it works well.

I've had quick blast on the Xbox: works fine – as a Barbarian.

Remind me, is this outsourced or subcontracted, rather than ActiBlizz internal? Lots of speculation that D4's development has been delayed and disrupted by some of their best cunts having to leave.

It's Vicarious Visions who are wholly owned by Acti Blizzard. Yeah I imagine losing your lead on the project will have an effect.

I missed out on the Beta weekend as it was my Birthday on Saturday so went away for a couple of days to have a lovely time, completely forgetting about this. Looking at the Diablo Reddit, it seems that lot's of folk ( or a vocal minority ) are unhappy with the controller implementation.
Kind of think though that it's a case of rose tinted glasses after how well D3 played and the controller working fine with D2 and it's just Reddit doing their usual overreaction.

Although this is Blizz's fanbase...

How dare other people enjoy a game on another system. People are sooo fucking weird.

It'll feel surreal not playing D2 on a giant grey keyboard, with a huge crt monitor. Really looking forward to some PS5 D2.
Just one of those games that no matter how it was remade, there's always going to be some bitter people resenting it which is always a strange sentiment I feel as the original is always there. Once it gets to folk moaning that they don't have to click to pick up gold anymore, I bow out of reading any further. That kind of gatekeeping around some games is absurd.

There was much the same thing around WoW Classic with the whole "NOCHANGES" crowd, that bayed for blood whenever the slightest alteration to what they remembered in their 2006 heads was mentioned. It's very odd.

I think one of the main issues with the Warcraft 3 remaster (apart from it being a bit crap by all accounts) is that they did actually replace the original so that you could no longer buy/play it

Yeah I think that really was the nail in it: not only releasing an unfinished mess, having cut many of the features they promised, but they also pulled the plug on the original completely. A genuinely incredible decision. What a mess they are in.

They've already said that the classic Diablo II is all present and correct under the hood, and that you can swap between visual treatments at will. That's already a shite sight better than some of the other remasters. Things like Starcraft 1, and hopefully D2, show that the can do it.
Warcraft 3 was just a clusterfuck of an example.

I’ve bothered to get this and had a quick go on the beta, it’s the only game I’m likely to pay for this year.
It looks and feels like Diablo 2, the controller option feels alright and works well. You can switch between graphics modes but there’s not really any reason to use the old view for anything other than curiosity.
The problem with it is that, well, it feels like a 20 year old + game with prettier graphics and a controller. Things like the speech in tiny bubbles and not scrolling smoothly if you want it to go quicker is a bit irritating and combat feels a bit off.
Overall, and only from about 30 minutes play, I’ll probably finish it and enjoy it but it does miss out a lot of QOL improvements that we’re used to in other games.

Aye, my Barbarian isn’t having any issues with the controller. Not sure how the ranged classes hold up. I’ve not explored the legacy graphics, but chuckled at the ability to swap between 800*600 and 640*480 resolution.
Anyone up for questing together? I’m not sure if it’s different to D3.

Do we know yet if D4 is going to be always online for consoles?

Do we know yet if D4 is going to be always online for consoles? I believe so yes as they're talking about it in the sense of Destiny with things like Strikes.

Open Beta starts tomorrow: would anybody care to join me on Xbox? As I understand it, Blizzard aren't implementing cross-platform multiplayer until after launch… :/

I've downloaded it on ps5 but not sure why. I liked diablo 2 back in the day, as I did diablo, but 3 just seems so much better I can't be arsed going back.

I suppose it's up to the individual. I wouldn't crucify anyone for wanting to play it though, especially when there's so much nostalgia involved

I've got a feeling that a lot of people having only played D3 will come away very underwhelmed and wonder why all these nerds kept telling them it was the bestest ever.

Especially people who will be confused that you had to use health, stamina and mana potions and that you had buy scrolls to identify magic items.

The bosses in D2 actually felt like a pretty big deal, as did progressing between acts. There wasn't really any pacing in D3, just felt like a continuous slog from beginning to end
