Ahh okay.
If you like Studio Ghibli films, the Ni No Kuni games are also lovely. If you want something a little more mature, the recent Soul Hackers 2, and Yakuza Like A Dragon are good options also.
I'll let others recommend things now as to not take over the thread.

I’m hoping the Trails games make it to switch at some point

When do you meet her? Haven't had the privilege yet. Not until the end of chapter 5, so towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, she is a relatively important character, so you'll have to listen to that "Australian" accent for a bit even if she's not in the party. Ugh. (it doesn't ruin the game though)

And to be clear, it isn't just about her bad, inconsistent accent. Even if that didn't suck, the fact is that her personality boils down to "is angry, all the time".
Imagine the world's loudest, bitchiest, moodiest teen, and THEN give her a shit accent and lots of speaking lines.

As resident Aussie, how did you feel about Vanille (BARS!) in Final Fantasy XIII?
I usually love an Australian accent, but I'm like yo, get Aussie Minnie Mouse off my screen.

I don't remember finding Vanille too bad, but I don't really remember much about that game in general.
I think it helped that she was actually played by an Australian, instead of someone whose entire training apparently consisted of watching the Bart vs Australia Simpsons episode a couple times.

She’s one of the more famous members of the voice cast as well, just don’t understand the thinking behind asking her to play a complete Brooke from Darwin

Those people (bogans) definitely exist. I'm not opposed to that kind of broad Aussie accent being in games, though it's not very similar to mine. There are even a couple of other characters in XC3 with it (ie. basically anyone in the Vandham family).
But this character is something else. It's probably how other people react to the Yorkshire or Welsh or Essex or whatever accents in these games. I don't notice those ones, but this one is uniquely terrible to me.

Around about 54 hours into the second game, reaching chapter 7 and have really hit a brick wall with it. I feel like the blades I have are just a bit shit and finding it really hard to get chains going (both the break, topple, etc and the blade art chains). I'm normally ok against regular enemies, but as soon as I run into a named enemy or a boss it all just falls apart. My characters are even a couple levels above everything and still seem to just get wrecked, normally when the enemy gets into their enraged mode. I really feel that this has been since Pyra/Mythra has been taken away , with my usual composition no longer working without them and nothing I try seems to make up for their absence. Not really sure what to do about this. I've mostly been enjoying the game (although I was liking it more early on), but not sure how I can carry on. I'm now fighting Malos and have no clue how to proceed after getting him down to about 1/4 of his health 4 or 5 times before getting totally destroyed.

That fight is a bit of a bitch for a lot of people after a cursory internet search. Unfortunately it's been quite a while since I did it but I'll try and give some general tips: Make sure your Blades and Drivers are sporting up to date weapon chips (I'm not sure which town you last unlocked -I think it's Tantal at the point you're at- but that town's chips should be the best buyable ones so far) and Aux Cores/Accessories relevant to their roles (aggro boosters on your tank, damage boosters and aggro reducers on the others etc)
Have Rex with Blade Nia in the party for healing, but it might be a good idea to switch to controlling Morag for dodge tanking instead of controlling Rex yourself. If you go the Morag route it's probably better to use Zeke (for damage and flexibility) instead of Tora as well. Either way you'll want some aggro-drawing accessories on your tank and aggro reducers on the others, if Malos takes them down and you can't re-establish aggro quickly after reviving he'll shred the other two in short order.
Try to hold off on chain attacks until no party members are at risk of dying, since you need the gauge for revives. This also lets you build up more element orbs for the inevitable chain attack to really hurt him.
The big problem with the fight (well, one of them) is that with Mythra out of commission you can't reliably target Malos' weakness unless you got lucky with the gacha and/or have the DLC for an extra Light Blade. Still, try to diversify your party's elements as much as possible (a party of Rex/Morag/Zeke has Water/Wind-Rex-, Fire/possibly Water-Morag- and Thunder-Zeke- pretty much by default, leaving only Earth and Ice -Malos should resist Dark-), both for building and breaking orbs on Chain Attacks. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. It would help if you list which Blades you have on each character, but at the end of the day there's no shame in trying to find more Blades or grinding more levels/equipment, or even just fighting some randos to get used to a different character.

Oh, and if you can manage to make a Blade Combo ending with a Seal Blowdown or Seal Shackle Driver effect it'll take away the most annoying statuses your party can receive (Shackle Driver is especially bullshit because it prevents your healing). Only one of those may be active at once though (a new one will overwrite anything already active) so basically seal Shackle Driver and then never complete a full Blade Combo again.
Unfortunately I don't remember the exact element chain to do that though, might need some trial and error unless you just look it up...

Blades I have at the moment are: Rex - Nia, Roc and Nim Morag - Brighid, Aegaeon and Perceval Zeke - Pandoria, Vess and Shura - P and V are the only unique blades I have for Zeke and then there is Tora with his usual 2 at this point, although I haven't been using him much besides my last attempt in place of Morag . Edit: ok, just gave it another go controlling Morag instead of Rex and did it first time. It was still much closer than I feel it should have been and still couldn't actually complete a blade combo, so surprised I managed it.

I haven't really played this past the first time you visit Colony 9, but maybe I'll finally force myself to tomorrow as I'm stuck on a plane for 5 hours.

That's a pretty good spread in terms of elements and no real howlers when it comes to Blade/Driver pairs (two of the same element on Z aside). I will say you're missing quite a lot of Rare Blades even accounting for the fact that you haven't unlocked any good Core Crystal farming spots yet (that I can remember, at least). There's a few named Core Crystals you get from sidequests and shops that always give you a specific Rare Blade if you want to check them out. The good news is, you're past a big roadblock of a fight and closer to unlocking one of the big farming spots for not only Core Crystals but also some pretty good weapon chips (by getting the last few materials necessary for the Ardun back in Torigoth). That said, Blade (and Driver) Combos (and by extension big Chain Attacks) do become more and more important to at least have a decent grasp on. It's really not necessary to have any "meta" builds just to finish the game, that's DLC best times territory, but taking the time to understand and practice that system will make everything much easier from here on out.

That makes sense on the unique blades. Think Vess is the only one I've had from a side quest, with the others all being main quest line or random core crystal drops.
I have moved away from doing side quests a bit, as they increasingly seemed to rely on the field skills, which I've become to find really annoying. It really should just take it from the pool of blades you have, rather than only the equipped ones. The way it is set up, I can probably clear the field skill, but I have to spend 10 minutes shuffling blades in and out to get the right combination.
Perhaps I should spend some time clearing a few of the side quests.
Which shop type would sell unique core crystals? Don't think I've seen those on sale.

The bold part I 100% agree on, especially since some Field Skill checks needed me to use generics to get there and it was a nightmare sifting through the couple hundred I'd got in the search for rares (never mind then having to hope I could actually assign all of them...) I think the only shop that sells a Core Crystal is in Torigoth. I distinctly remember salvaging for hours to get her as soon as I got there, a main story quest needs you to grab three of a... something that only appears that early because of the quest, and it selled for a lot. So I'd get two, go sell them so the quest didn't update, get another two... Looks like I've got the JRPG grind mindset It did pay off, though, that Blade's Affinity chart gets unlocked as you spend money, so unless it's retroactive (which it might be, I haven't checked) getting her early kinda worked out! On that note, Affinity charts are one of the main things to power up your Blades, going from 20 to 60% bonus damage on a special move is quite the increase. They are a pretty massive sidequest though, so I'd say focus on the Blades you actually use, main story Blades especially, if you haven't been doing so already.

I'm getting on a bit these days and as a result there are fewer and fewer games that actually really grab me. JRPG's were my absolute go to after falling in love with FF7 as a 13 year old. That love died with final Fantasy 12 in my 20's. I just felt to old for them. The original Xenoblade kept that dying flame just about alive before a long hiatus and a renewed respect for the genre with Dragon Quest XI and Octopath Traveller where I managed to look past the anime melodrama and enjoy the systems at play, the constant feeling of progress. It was rewarding and good value for money and my time. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 may have brought me back to the table and for surprising reasons. Anime melodrama, check, pointless fetch quests, check, millions of shiny collectibles all over the screen, yep they are in there and these are three of my biggest hates in all of videogames and yet here I love it. The difference between Xenoblade and its use of these tropes are that it manages to make all of these things matter. You feel like they are worth your time. Everything you do feeds into a never ending feeling of progress. Those ugly shiny items? Those can be crafted, cooked with or traded to build affinity with colonies. The same can be said of the pointless side quests. The story is suprisingly touching and interesting. Combat is varied and the scope for experimentation is huge. Exploration rewards you with more goodies, a secret area or a Named monster to tick off the list in suprisingly tough fights. Many of the side quests are really good too. In many ways XC3 is the Stardew Valley of JRPG's. It takes the compulsive loop of completing tasks in a farming sim and wraps it in a gorgeous and massive epic. Not since Hades have I loved a game enough to post about it. I love it.

I'm so side-tracked that I actually can't remember which chapter I'm in That bit is great there's tons of interesting islands to find! There's loads there I've not fully explored but I did find landmarks for most if not all of the areas so I can fast travel back later. I moved on because I was in danger of spending 30 hours there alone and I'm terribly over levelled now (72)

I'm 60 hours and about as many levels. Feel quite overwhelmed by the island sections. Met a couple of the heros around there. So working on the quests for them at the moment.

I'm 30 hours in and at level 40. This game has this "oh let's do this mission first before continuing with the story" vibe that feels different from the other two. It helps that most of these side-quest are actually meaningful and interesting. I also like that my compulsive "grab everything I see" style of playing has some rewards

Back into this now, after a hiatus that took longer than I ever intended... About to start chapter 3 and get my first Hero quest done, getting the hang of chain attacks a bit more and the soundtrack continues to be amazing. The Moebius battle theme got stuck in my head the instant I heard it again, it might have played once earlier but I only now noticed how much of a banger it is. Sounds like the game is meaty enough to satisfy even Lanz, which bodes very well indeed Also Ethel is fit af awesome, glad the smarmy bastard didn't actually kill her
