I can see myself drifting away from it. Story and combat aren't really grabbing me, and fucking hell the opening tutorial heavy section starts to drag. Just finished a big boss fight and finally back in a camp so I'll crack on a bit anyway and see if it clicks.

I can understand people drifting away from it at the start as it is a bit slow going, but for me the atmosphere and exploration are more than enough to counterbalance the story being subdued so far and the slow mechanics introduction. Besides it's Xenoblade, if it's anything like the previous ones I'd expect some shit to hit the fan rather soon Plus I'd argue that if all of its systems were tossed at you at once by, say, the start of chapter 2, plenty would be panning it for being confusing and convoluted. This gradual introduction may get a bit annoying (and I agree that explaining each button press in e.g. menu tutorials feels a bit unnecessary) but it gives you the time to get used to each thing before introducing the next one. Now of course one could argue that they could have made the gameplay simpler and thus require less tutorials to begin with, but that's another can of worms (and for the record so far I'm not feeling overwhelmed, but that's just me) Funny thing though, I ran some calculations just for fun, and even with a conservative assumption of 20 total classes in the game (10 from each faction) one character alone could have millions of Art/skill combinations to work with... And there's most likely more than 20 classes and potentially more systems I don't know about yet to increase that number... Hell of a sandbox to play in

Got £32 cash at CEX. Considering I paid £38 that's not bad for the 13 hours I did get out of it.

12 hours in, at the start of chapter 3 and I'm still getting tutorials ! 😁 Yes, I'm taking my time with this. I just love the battle system now that it opened up.

I'm new to the series having jumped on the hype. I think if they had thrown everything at me from the start it would have fried my brain

It's definitely less complicated than 2, though I don't often find myself using the robot transformations. Hell, I barely switch to control different characters.

I've just got to midway through chapter 2..had it relatively simple and now I've had
Gems Cooking Chained special attack thing Switching classes
All thrown at me in what feels like an hour. So feeling a bit overwhelmed.
The gems and cooking seems self explanatory, is this something like in BOTW which could be largely ignored?
In terms of class switching. What's the benefit In training everyone to lvl 10 in each class?
In terms of the chaining, again seems self explanatory although I feel like I'm just guessing when it comes to who I pick to attack etc. It seems if I pick a heal it stops the chain though?

For chaining I think you'd pick a healer to hit 99% before you use the heaviest damage dealer to finish the chain as high as you possibly can. It only really comes up in boss fights though, so you don't even get to try it again for a while after that tutorial.
Cooking does seem a bit forgettable, but I still haven't unlocked any new recipes. XP buff sounds like something you'd always want though, so worth doing. Gem crafting i just did the highest level ones that I could and equipped them, then pretty much forgot about it.
No idea about the benefits of getting classes to 10, other than it helps unlock other classes. I'm just sticking to the initial classes you change to for now and will experiment when I get those to 10 and have unlocked a few more.

Cooking needs better recipes to become something to watch for, the initial one is basically nothing. Gems seem very important at higher levels, +40% higher auto-attack speed and +40% chance to hit twice with an auto-attack will charge your arts something fierce if you're an Agnian class (Mio's, Sena's and Taion's classes if you're just starting), and there's quite a few other buffs that'll change your fighting quite a bit. Definitely something to watch. Levelling a class up is something you want to be doing in general. Gives you more skills and arts to equip later. In theory you could eventually be one class and be rocking Master Arts from three others that you've levelled up. If nothing else I'd keep swapping classes around as they cap out in levels during exploration and only grab my best setups for bosses, but that's just me not wanting to waste CP from mobs. Also, 10 is only the initial class rank cap, the tutorial says you'll eventually get quests that raise that cap and the interface says you can master more arts and skills at ranks higher than 10. Eventually each class can give you three Arts and two skills to equip whenever, which is... a lot of options

For Chain Attacks, you want an Attacker to launch the first strike to trigger their bonus and a Defender to hit 100% and complete the order, getting their own bonus in the process, as counter-intuitive as that may sound.
It's healers I don't really know what to do with during one, they keep the Chain at 99 so in theory you can prolong the order you're on, but completing orders gives you buffs and launches a finisher that deals big damage, so I'm not sure what the point of intentionally not completing an order is... I'll have to look into it more.

The point of healers is to get it to the 99% threshold. Then you get a heavy hitter to finish the order at 150% or more, which "reactivates" more characters for the next round. You get 1 at 100%, 2 at 150%, and 3 at 200%.

I can smell the infinite Chain shenanigans already

Nah, you can get 4 chains (plus 1 evangelion one) at most. No infinites!

Ah, so you can't just keep completing orders until everything dies then? Fair enough, I guess.
Might as well just topple-lock things if you're really struggling then, with six characters and customizable arts it should be easier than ever.

I love the chain attacks, but god I wish you could speed them up a bit. They have real "FF7 summon cutscenes" energy.

I remember there's options in the menu for turning off some animations, are chain attacks not included? The theme that plays when you perform them is nice, at least. Although it might go the way of Vision Reacts where people hate it (jokingly or not) for interrupting the other battle themes...

Haven't seen a canteen yet either... Although admittedly I had to take a break these past few days to take care of some other stuff I'd left hanging. I'd probably be a lot further at my current pace...

Fuck me there's too many quests in this game. I thought they'd cut down on it with the Collectopedia shit, but there's still loads and loads and loads of regular ones that are basically "please find a thing for me".
And did you know that every main character has a side story quest, and every Hero character has not one but TWO quests? The second one to upgrade their class? At least they have cutscenes and actual stories to them.
Anyway, if you are dumb like me and did not realise this... when upgrading gems, YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THE LOWER TIER ONES. Like, you can skip levels just fine, and not have to look up the half dozen do-dads you missed while trying to get to the next story point.

Should save on the gemstones you need too, in case you can't be arsed exploring too much to find them. Unless we're both misunderstanding something and it takes the lower tiers' materials anyway... That said, probably not a good idea to wait too long to make them, just to avoid using materials. The passives can be pretty helpful...

Ah FFS! Of course I've been doing level 1 and then 2 of everything! Better to find out now than after 50 hours I suppose... I like that you only need to craft once and can equip on all characters. Just unlocked the second gem slot so will dig into gem crafting a bit more later.
Didn't really have a chance to play it much recently apart from an hour in the garden and an hour last night, but seem to be over the hump of the seemingly endless tutorials at least.

The Hero quests sound pretty nice though. I really need to get back into this, I feel like I left it exactly at the spot where it goes from great to awesome...

The end of chapter 5 has a solid 2 hours worth of cutscenes. At least that's what it feels like.

No, I think it pretty much is about 2 hours. I felt the absence of the helpful popups in FF14 - "Several cutscenes will now play in sequence. It is recommended you set aside sufficient time to view them in their entirity."

I'm approaching about 40 hours in 2 and on chapter 6 at the moment. I've been really enjoying it, perhaps in some ways more than the first game. Some elements are beginning to grate though.
The sudden inclusion of spike damage against a boss was particularly annoying. The game offered zero indication that this was happening and it was only after a bunch of deaths and a Google could I realise what was happening. For a game that likes to drag out its tutorials, the lack of any indication of this fairly significant feature to combat was just bizarre. I'm also fairly certain there are a couple of enemies that have this ability too, but, again, it isn't really clearly.
Also, unlike 1, I'm not finding switching up characters as having a particularly noticeable effect on play style. The combat is enjoyable when you get into it, but there doesn't seem to be that much variation. Just work your way through the abilities and get those chains going. Perhaps some more varied characters will come along to mix this up a little more, but that feels a little unlikely.
I also seem to completely fall apart if I mix my team up. Perhaps I just need to sort out the extra characters with better blades and items, but my Rex, Nia and Tora combo just seems to work, whilst switching in the other characters seems to immediately cause me to struggle in fights. Which is odd, as the other two have higher levels than those core 3.
The randomness of the blade unlocking is also annoying. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I seem to constantly get the same ones, over and over again.

Re:characters, if you've already recruited Morag and Zeke, that's it. You don't get any more Drivers, it's all about the Blades from here on out. Re:Blades, 99% of the time the ones you need to worry about are those that have a big flashy cutscene that introduces them and that actually look like characters, rather than a generic grey skin/blue eyes NPC. There's a whole system around which Blades you get first, how many Cores it takes to actually hit a Rare Blade etc but hell if I can remember it off the top of my head. The random Blade system is a bit stupid anyway, because while you can eventually just brute force it by farming Cores till the cows come home (don't accidentally kill the Ardun you're feeding, by the way, trust me on this) and influence the element of the Blade you're going to get, there's pretty much no way to guarantee that you won't open, say, a pure tank Blade on Nia. And the items you can use to swap Blades between characters are rare and finite until New Game Plus... Just as a general hint, don't worry too much about giving Rare Blades to Rex. Prioritize other characters. As for your party, Tora will eventually start falling behind if you don't develop Poppi, and there's some good healer Blades for characters other than Nia. Eventually I just rolled with Rex, 4 and 5 (names redacted) and usually swapped control between Rex and 4, as needed.

Oh my fucking god the Australian girl in XC3 is like nails on a chalkboard. Even if she hadn't been voiced by someone whose apparently-only exposure to an Australian accent was watching Elaine on Seinfeld say A DINGO ATE MY BAY-BEEEY over and over again, it would still be terrible.
Just don't fucking try an accent if you can't do it. She can't even do the bad accent consistently!
