Already played Nier A, bit of a nether zone now. I was the same after elden ring, what I love about XC3 is that it wasn't on my radar at all, so a lovely unexpected suprise. Made me realise that I really do love JRPG style turn based combat. Been trying to work out what to play next and I think I'll try and pick up persona 5 for the switch. Loved 4 when I played it on the psp. Otherwise it's something like Dragon quest xi Xenoblades 1 (Although worried about going to an older game after playing 3 which I assume will be more "polished" Shin megami v They seem like the obvious stand outs. Just worried been spoilt with XC3 haha. I've not played it (yet), but Live A Live is meant to be very good and a bit more bite sized compared to other JRPGs. Could be a good one to go for rather than jumping straight into another massive 100+ hour epic. No one has mentioned Fire Emblem yet, so I'll give a nod to Three Houses. Enjoyed that very much (although need to go back and finish the second half). I see Dragon Quest XI is available on the PS Plus subscription, so I'll probably give that a go there at some point.

Ni no kuni and it's sequel are also very good comfort blanket old school JRPGs with loads of charm. The first one is very grindy though.

Ni no kuni is indeed quite grindy, but the story and overall charm (and animation and voice acting) more than make up for it.

The end of chapter 5 is just.... Wow! It's been a while that a game actually had me glued to the screen, wanting to know how things would play out. Awesome stuff!

I have had my hands forced. Amazon dropped persona 5 to 40 quid. That with my 7 pound voucher worked out a decent price.
Played some of the dragon quest demo. Did enjoy it but will save that one for a other day.

Bringing this back up, I've only just made it into the third region, Pentelas, around the 45-hour mark (after spending almost thirty hours rinsing Fornis alone, and there's still places I haven't been through yet ) and... I'll have more to say later, but for now... The FUCK is wrong with J?!?!

You mean, what is wrong with J in a mental sense? Or what's wrong with the random difficulty spike?

Mentally, yeah. At this point I've explored so much I expect to be overlevelled for a good while. I even went to Elaice Highway and did stuff like Alexandria's questline (I squealed when I saw -and went to- the Distant Fingertip!) Entirely self-inflicted, of course, and with Xenoblade's Exp. formula it should correct itself. Plus it means I can keep a reserve of bonus Exp. to use as needed. Was really funny when I only got the tutorial for changing Heroes after Riku & Manana joined, I suppose the game only expected you to have Valdi at that point, since Ethel didn't stay, but I had a good half-dozen

All that aside, I'm officially loving this. It's not only a very good standalone game, but also a love letter to longtime fans like myself. From the soundtrack, to location design, to small things like Art, class and collectible names, there's references to the whole series all over the place, and the way they've managed to make it all fresh again (and all of the new things they've put in, of course!) is amazing. If there was ever any doubt in my mind that Tears of the Kingdom is going to be a damn incredible game, it's all gone. Monolith have proven time and again they know what's up, and a more powerful console (potentially) is just going to be the icing on the cake.

J has a lot of issues to do with self-loathing, feeling disrespected, etc etc. He does get a bit of depth, though the crazy is definitely up to 11 at the start.
Also, a protip: overlevelling is fine, but it may screw you a bit if you're interested in leveling up your various classes. You get very little CP (or whatever the class XP is) from killing things below your level.

So far I've been keeping up pretty well with class levels. I don't think there's any class that I don't have at least one of the main six high-to-max ranked in, and I've been switching them as I go to make sure no CP goes to waste. And push comes to shove I can always use Nopon coins on them I suppose. And yeah, I can definitely see J getting more depth as it goes. He's the only one of the Consuls to fight us and make a clean getaway so far, after all. Well, him and the very first one IIRC. Although it did make me paranoid about who else we might have re-killed at this point ("What letters have I fought, again?") That entire scene was awesome, honestly. Fake Isurd's voice acting, the other side of the Ouroboros pairs (Sena flipping a whole damn Ferronis )... And then they introduce what seems to be the peaceful AF not-Makna (or does that come later? The battlefield did seem Great Makna Falls-y, at least) to really make sure the whiplash sets in

Also apparently I stopped right before the chapter changed and, uh... Why do I have a feeling that the N in the cutscenes is somehow Noah...? They look similar, sound similar, Eunie was shown earlier to have had a past life or something... The mindfuckery is slowly starting to emerge... Don't say if I'm correct or not in that, by the way, it's just a long shot hunch

JuniorFE No spoilers, but when you get to the end of chapter 5 it will become clear. By the way, better reserve some time for that (you will know when once you get there - I just had to know how it was going to play out and ended up going to bed waaaay too late ).

Yeah, that bit was definately the Xenoblade equivilent of the infamous FF14 text box "Several cutscenes will play in sequence. It is recommended you set aside enough time to view them in their entirity."

Ah, the "two hours of cutscenes" bit people were talking about, yeah? Good thing I'll be (should be) able to just put the Switch in sleep mode and head to bed in the middle if needed Not that I will, chances are I'll just stay up till six or whatever, but it's an option...

God damn it. God damn it. I fucking knew Ethel and Cammuravi were too cool to live, man... He ripped his damn eye out and everything, you get all happy and cheering that they're free, aaand then the "oh crap" sets in... Bright side, the ensuing fight against O& SP was all the more satisfying for it! Pretty sure there were quite a few people throwing punches along with Mio when she socked the bastards

I do still have a bit of hope though, although it's only thanks to a bit of an interface spoiler... The Hero Roster shows you silhouttes of the Heroes that haven't joined you yet, and one of them is pretty obviously a certain smouldering fellow...
So unless we somehow get his class posthumously (which is not at all far-fetched) they might be pulling a Fiora again... 🤞

Tbh I'm not sure I really like the "people getting rezzed again and again" concept, as it kind of cheapens any big story deaths that do happen. But it's a pretty common anime thing, so oh well.

Apologies. I thought it was a pretty early plot development, so didn't really think about spoilers.

Wait, what? Which cutscene did I forget? All I remember from the setup cutscenes is that the characters are basically manufactured and have a ten-year lifespan, and the closest I've seen alluding to repeated rebirths is the Eunie cutscene and then some conversations between Ethel and Cammuravi about "being reborn" that made it seem like it was some big important choice to make, not something that happens to everyone... Edit: ah, so it's revealed later then...

Maybe I just pieced it together earlier than when the plot got there. Sorry!

I need to get back into this, dropped it fairly early in because the combat was getting on my nerves. Am now playing P5R to death though, and bought the latest Tales game as it's cheap in the sale, and whatever Sword Art online game was on sale too. Things not looking good for available time! Edit: also debating Soul Hackers 2 on sale, supposed to be like a budget SMT, worth £35?

Come to think of it, there's still a lot of unknown context and questions around the topic anyway... Would it actually happen to everyone, like Zanza's "destruction and recreation" thing back in 1? Or is it a deal the Consuls/Queens make with just a select few (and if so, why?)? Would they come back properly or would they come back... Well, Joran? ...and so on. As long as I don't know any of that, the actual concept is really not that much of a spoiler. I mean, it was shown that it can happen. So really, no worries MolarAm🔵

I'm finally starting it this weekend - have the week off work next week whilst the missus is away and I've been saving this to play whilst I do fuck all bar walk the dog.
Considering the original is my favourite JRPG ever hyped is an understatement!

...Fuck me, that was some chapter! (chap. 4 spoilers abound) There was just so, so much to unpack! The state of Eryth Sea's Hovering Reefs, Alcamoth being converted into a Mechonis type area, sort-of-Mumkhar (he certainly gave me the vibes) doing the Fusion Dance with Joran, the Queen actually being the Melia except fuck you N, she duped(?) you (side note, I'm kinda glad she's (apparently) not an out-and-out enemy, I really liked her back in 1 and with all she went through I'd rather not have to actually fight her...) and of course the slam dunk of the Xeno X style pods being able to reproduce you... Damn! And it's kinda nice to see that my N hunch might actually be correct, somehow... What I didn't expect was for an "M" to show up, too! I actually had a thought that if N was Noah, it would be a Noah that had lost Mio and gone off the deep end... Guess not! Just... Damn. And chapter 5 is supposed to be better than this? I'm not sure I'm prepared

Oh, and that's not even getting into the craziness that was Ashera Best part was, the moment she quipped living in a world of strife, I started reciting Dunban's lines in my head... And then (among other things) her Talent Art was Blossom Dance and I just about doubled over
