Second wave of the Expansion Pass dropped for anyone that's bought it. Haven't downloaded it myself just yet though, so no impressions on the new Hero or Challenge Mode.

As for the actual game, after Aetia Region slightly railroaded you as to where you could go (although I still can't fast travel to where Mio's group was at the start and there's also at least one part of the region that's inaccessible until you can climb), Fornis is very open and really lets you go basically wherever as long as you can traverse it! Between leaving Colony 4 and the next story objective I must have doubled my playtime just going places, and I'm pretty sure I haven't explored like half the region still Unique Monsters still hand my party their collective arses if I'm not careful though. I do have a slight problem with just how much health they have, their movesets and damage are otherwise very challenging but fair (so far) but they feel just a bit too spongy. Then again I am at the cusp of unlocking a second accessory slot so that should help a lot considering some of the buffs they can give. Overall though a bit of sponginess is not nearly enough to tarnish the rest of the game. Very excited to see what opens up after I can use the various crossable ropes and climbable walls that are all over the place, too.

I don't think I'll bother going back to it until the story DLC is released next year sometime. I had a good time with it, but there's other things I want to play.

I finished this the other day, twas good.
Gameplay wise probably the weakest of the 3, the combat never felt like I needed to anything other than just use my arts when they were available for most classes. I wonder how much of that is by design because by extension I was a bit frustrated that I never really had a consistent party composition due to all the class sharing and swapping. There was no point ever figuring out a "lets build my party this way" because for the game's entire duration I was just swapping shit around to share stuff.
The combat just felt wildly unstrategic, never really mattering much more than your relative level compared to the enemy for the most part. Sometimes I had to chuck an extra healer in, but that was like <5 times. In the late game I had to think about how to make my controlled attacker character pull aggro less. But that was it, really. Fought every enemy, boss etc the exact same way.
Ultimately each of the series has its own strengths. I think 1 had the most likeable characters and interesting world to me. 2 had a patchy tone and was a bit cringey at places, but the overall narrative and pacing was phenomenal throughout. 3 nails the tone and story but the combat left me cold and the pacing fell apart after chapter 5 due to a pull to do a lot of ascension quests.

I feel like most of the issues with the combat system (which I like so far but can understand why people could get frustrated with it) stem from the doubled active party size compared to the previous. Controlling (and building) a party of 5-7 characters works well in a turn-based or Active Time Battle-based system like in Dragon Quest and earlier Final Fantasies and such. In a game like this, it makes battles feel like an MMO raid-lite... for every random critter.
I can understand why they did it story wise (Interlinks and such wouldn't really be possible with just three members) and I am still very much enjoying it as I said, but it can definitely get rather chaotic.
The one true gripe I have with it so far is that ordering party members to come to you makes them stop attacking as they go, which doesn't really make it a good strategic option, but they also don't feel like standing in the AoE's for buffs and heals if you don't use the order, sooo... Granted, other healing classes probably have healing skills that don't require you to cluster around them (and Chain Attacks eliminate positioning requirements from everything), but for the starting two healers it's definitely an issue for me.

As you can see from this thread I adored this game but I do understand the point about the combat. I didn't mind it so much as it allowed me to concentrate on the compelling task of mopping up every bit of content which was for the most part extremely fun and rewarding. Only during the super bosses did I have to think a little. The game definitely needed more of those to give you opportunity post game to use all of the class abilities you learned from all of the swapping. I am still class swapping after 170 hours and it would be nice to have something to test different builds against. I know you can "level up" the super bosses but it's not as compelling after you have already bested them.

Just finished and thought it was rather meh. Still good but not up to the highs of 1 and 2, mostly due to the combat. 130 hours so it clearly was engaging, but the last 50 or so I really just checked out. Combat was so dull and I only really looked at the screen during chain attacks, the rest of the time I would have to on in the background or browsing on my phone. More inertia to complete, especially that final dungeon that took forever. Says a lot that I am unsure of the ending as I was browsing my phone during the cutscenes, I think I missed whenever they explained the disappearing events for instance or the black fog.
It really felt like world of Warcraft or something where you grind in the background while doing something else, just to get another ascension quest or something, but then I struggled to then re engage when it actually needed me to concentrate. I also never really liked the world, it all looked the same, there was no big monster islands floating in fog or climbing up a giant dead man world, it was all just… well locations, sometimes with a sword in the background.
7/10

I was so overleveled for it that I didn't even really need the extra support they give you. But yeah, it would suck having to start over, it's a pretty long fight!

I have done it now, just needed an extra healer. Was level 80 and died on the last phase. I had been steam rolling everything up till that point.
Had to sleep the switch before the final cut scenes due to kid waking up. I'll be boring you all with my thoughts on this game. Essentially though I absolutly loved it! (Final boss frustration aside)

I'm still in chapter 5. Level 52, because I keep getting sidetracked by all the other quests. But hey, when the side quests are this good! 48 hours into the game now and still loving every second of it 😁 Even thought the battle system is not as good as 1 or 2, it's still great fun especially when you kick off a chain attack.

OK so all wrapped up now. Finished level 81 and about 100 hours in.
A bit of background, I've dabbled in JRPGs, persona/nier automata and some Japaneseish games along the way. I've never played a xenoblades game and this is my first.
I absolutly LOVED this! Probably my favorite game of the year and after elden ring that's not something I expected. The combat was always fun and I loved the characters and the world.
The music is probably my all time favorite in recent memory and I'll be honest carried most of the game for me.
I can't pin point why but just fell in love with it and dying to play some similar type games.
My only criticism would be, a bit more "tactics" for the combat but maybe that's something that would come with higher difficulties.
The rather long tutorial which I imagine would have turned alot away.
Some of the voice acting (english) was iffy looking at you ghondor.
Brilliant. Hook it to my veins

I'm about 45 hours into the first game now. Although it took a long while for me to get into it, I am now into it. Highlights are the music and the huge levels, which look amazing even on my small Switch Lite screen. Eryth Sea has been a particular highlight, absolutely massive and looks beautiful. The combat seems pretty well balanced. I'm doing a few sidequests here and there (about 200 done so far lol) and feel like the main story battles aren't too easy - I have to keep an eye on the health bars at least and have scraped through a few by the seat of my pants. Am mixing up my party to try to raise their affinity. The only mechanic I haven't engaged with at all so far is the gem crafting. Absolutely no idea how that works, but it doesn't seem like I really need it. The story is gubbins but enough to keep me engaged I guess. Characters are likeable, even Riki is growing on me.

For anyone wondering, the DLC Hero (in terms of mechanics) is basically Poppi from 2, except all the tedious minigame guff needed to upgrade her has been replaced with hunting down High Ether, which is much simpler and very much welcome.
Her gameplay is a bit odd (your dodge tank also becoming stronger by dying feels a bit counter-intuitive) but she's pretty damn good, universally useful in Chain Attacks and push comes to shove you can always have a second tank to cover for her I suppose. That aside I'm still savoring the game in general. Learned how to climb now so even Aetia opened up a good bit, now I'm just hoovering up Heroes and sidequests. I did stop using the bonus Exp. at camps to avoid being overlevelled because I could see it happening eventually, but it gives me a good backup if I run into a wall. And of course soundtrack, areas and such still phenomenal. I could probably copy/paste this under every post I make about this game and it would hold true

Trying to work out what to do with my xenoblade 3 hole in my life.
Trade it in for astral chain or the first xenoblades. Or hang on to it although after 100 hours not sure how much more I would get from it.

Although it might be a while before we get to the really meaty, Torna-style stuff. Otherwise the other Xenoblades are definitely something I'd recommend, although I do have a bias

In case you want something not Xenoblade, you could also consider Nier:Automata. It's out on Switch now. I bought it from a colleague but I'm trying to hold off starting that until I finish XC3.

Just finished and wow, what an ending, the pay off to 1 and 2 was *chefs kiss*
Took me 85 hours in the end, that's doing a few of the ascension hero quests and a lot of side quests but of course, so much I haven't done. To be honest I think I'll leave it there as 85 hours is quite intensive, realised I put more hours into that than any Trails game!
In the lead up to the story dlc comeing out I'll go back to it for sure to do the extra hero (did the one they've already released) and probably do more ascension quests.
Think I'll need a break from starting anything else for a bit as will struggle to get into something straight away I think after that epic.

Already played Nier A, bit of a nether zone now. I was the same after elden ring, what I love about XC3 is that it wasn't on my radar at all, so a lovely unexpected suprise.
Made me realise that I really do love JRPG style turn based combat. Been trying to work out what to play next and I think I'll try and pick up persona 5 for the switch. Loved 4 when I played it on the psp.
Otherwise it's something like
Dragon quest xi
Xenoblades 1 (Although worried about going to an older game after playing 3 which I assume will be more "polished"
Shin megami v
They seem like the obvious stand outs. Just worried been spoilt with XC3 haha.

I wouldn't worry about "going to an older game" with Xeno 1, it's a good bit simpler in terms of gameplay but I don't think it's worse for it (in fact, in some cases you might find it better). Plus it'll be fun to see if you can retroactively spot the references 3 made to the rest And Dragon Quest 11 is also a favourite of mine, especially if you'd prefer a slower, turn-based battle system after the Xeno action. Also Octopath Traveler, if you haven't played it (can't remember if you have off the top of my head).

I'll spare you the environment/music gushing re: Xenoblade 1 because I'd say it's pretty obvious at this point Do take your time at the title screen though

Another shout for Dragon Quest XI. There's a pretty lengthy demo on the eshop. Save carries over. Easily one of my favourite JRPGs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 of course is also an option. At least the combat system is different (enough) from XC1 and XC3. and I liked it just a tad more than XC1...

Oh definitely, I'm just focusing more on 1 because damagedinc mentioned it, otherwise 2 is also up there. As is X IMO, but that might be harder to find since it's still Wii U exclusive... Port it already you fucks

Dragon quest 11 and Persona 5 are both great shouts. DQ I have played through twice (probably close to 100 hours each time) and I am 60 hours into P5 on the series x after platinum runs on P5 on ps4 (100 hours) and P5R on PS4 (130 hours).
Amazing games.

I think the answer is simple. I must play them all! Haha.
Anyone know if they will release the XC3 soundtrack?

I've just realised I still love JRPG'S the 175 hours I put into XC3 would appear to support that. If you are looking for something to fill the void you could try DQ11 as others have said. DQ11 is the game that brought me back to JRPG'S after a long hiatus since my late teens (39 now) XC1 is an all time classic but the systems and progression don't interlock as beautifully as in XC3. In short if I were you and I'd not played DQ11 I'D Buy that. It's mechanically very straightforward and therefore easy to get into after another 100 hour epic. It's a warm fire of a JRPG that really taps into my inner young teen. I'd defo pick up XC1 at some point but maybe when there's distance between it and XC3
