I'm definitely finding the defensive side/ball recovery difficult. Can't shake the PES muscle memory of holding X/A to pressure the ball, constantly mis-timing my 'stand' (?) tackles, and I feel like whenever I get close to a player any sort of turn completely does me lol

L2/R2 helps but timing of that is crucial or you're toast.

In my 17 Rivals matches so far I’ve taken the lead in 16. Only managed to win 3. I am such a bottle job.
Looking forward to general release when the shit casuals turn up. The only people who play the ultimate edition pre release are all really good, except me. I just lose a lot.

I just can’t seem to master it. |

I played a bit more last night and then had a couple of games of PES21. PES just plays better for me. The animation is much better in FIFA and PES is a bit frantic, but the AI is so much better. Definitely felt like I had to work for my goals more than FIFA where I was just galloping through (and likewise in conceding). Can't help but think that an amalgamation of the two would be the perfect football game.

Jockey and contain until there’s an opportunity then go for it. With you defenders you need to be especially sure because if you bring them out of the defensive line for a tackle and miss, more often than not you’re toast from there. Anyone gone down the eneba route for 23 and have their (non ultimate) code yet? |

Don't love the defending but I can tolerate it and I'm not sure the AI does a brilliant job of making runs for you when you are on the ball. Still a a bit floaty as well.
The commentary is absolutely dire though, im playing my career as Man United and I'm going to have to sell Bruno because the commentator keeps pronouncing his name as Fernange and it's doing my nut in.
Considering picking up the pc version as the framerate should be a bit nicer as well.

EG's review was pretty terrible. The length of time the guy spent talking about FUT and how it is addictive and gambling was ridiculous. Was this his first FIFA or something?
Will get the game nearer Christmas probably.

I'm really enjoying this, definitely going to buy it once the trial is up. Had some fantastic games on the higher difficulties and it feels like you really need to work for the goals.
Defending is actually my favourite part of it. Really have to think about positioning, blocking shots, waiting for opportunities to get your foot in. Could never go back to just holding a button down and zooming in to take the ball now.
Better than any of the PES's now for me.

Just a quick shout to those that might be preordering or purchasing tomorrow... This regularly drops in price by October to get in the second wave of players. I noticed the standard edition for X/S seems to be around £60 and it's normally around £40 if you can wait a couple of weeks.

In career mode when you sell a player the cut scene it shows is hilarious. The manager and coach escort him from the building like he is being sacked. The music just adds to it as well.

Try going into the controller settings and changing all the different passing assists to semi instead of assisted. Feels like you've got more control over passing and crossing and it stops it picking the wrong player all the time.

Right stick switch is a must to help wrong player switching.
And yeah, semi's only for passing etc.

Main tip I would give for defending is just don't use the X button at all (or whatever the bottom button is on Xbox). All it does is take control away from you. Jockey all the time, and think more about how you would defend in a real game, getting yourself on the right place to cover angles, looking for interceptions or blocking passes and shots. If an opportunity comes to nick the ball stick your foot in but it's more important to keep your shape and keep them out of dangerous areas.

Using R1 to bring another defender while you cover the pass or run of another player helps too. AI defender hassles while you cover or press in for the tackle.
