Deactivated my Twitter account a few weeks back, leading up to the election, reactivated then deactivated again just so I could recall some of the decent accounts I followed and add them to a Bluesky account.
I use it as a sports,Tv and gaming feed really. I am a born antisocial grump.
Hope Musk dies in the wreckage of one of his rockets, with Trump as a ride along, if they can find a spacesuit big enough to fit in his waste of flesh

this is the elrond thread now, right? anyway, i'm a mere lurker but our ottocrat bare lives over there so we can all follow him and make numbers go up bsky.app/profile/ottocr.atAll I need now is for the EIHL and Cardiff Devils to move their accounts over and I can delete that previous mess forever. you clearly meant the nottingham panthers

It'll be interesting to see how much Bluesky grows without an engagement algorithm.
Supposedly TikTok's massive growth is down to their carefully guarded recommendation algorithm. Which sounds like BS to me, how much different can it be from 'recommend popular thing that's similar to to other things user has watched'?
Sounds like a modern day Frosties Secret Formula.

You’d think so, but often these things are more complex than they might appear. The infamous Google pagerank algorithm is a good example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRankIn this instance, how do you know which tweets are “similar” to others? Do you measure content? Or similarly-followed?

Nah, we're talking about the TikTok algorithm.
if (video.has('#woke') OR poster=Elon{ recommendTo(allUsers) }
is the top secret X algorithm.

Oh great. I binned twitter partly because of the US election and all of the UK politics accounts ive followed are still constantly wetting themselves about it so my feed looks barely any different.

Maybe it's not the choice of platform that's the issue.

I was hoping it not being algorithmic would mean there wouldn't be a constant deluge forced on me. I suppose politics is politics but I can't really be arsed with watching idiocracy unfold in real time again.

I'm tempted to sign up to Bluesky to assist it's growth, but on balance I'm pretty sure my presence would do absolutely nothing to help.
Hope it does topple Twitter though

I was hoping it not being algorithmic would mean there wouldn't be a constant deluge forced on me. I suppose politics is politics but I can't really be arsed with watching idiocracy unfold in real time again. Join some feeds on specific topics and look at those instead of your general "following" tab. It probably is slightly unavoidable whilst numbers are relatively low though. Most people will have moved over because of political reasons, so inevitably they are going to be the more politically engaged and talk politics. As the numbers grow though and more people get pulled into the snowball it will make the conversations a little more diverse. The greater control you have should also make it easier to compartmentalise and only see what you want to see. It is happening at the moment and I have quite a lot of game developers I follow and will have a run of gaming related messages in my "following" (despite me recommending using other feeds, I still mostly stick to "following" out of habit). Same with books and, to a lesser extent, film.

I wasn't being facetious this time, though. I genuinely wonder if we're coming to the point where (this kind of) social media has run its course and the next thing will be along soon. Reddit is absolutely no different in this regard.

It does seem like every social media platform eventually converges into a human centipede of misery so, yeah, I can't imagine bluesky being any different.

Well, indeed. I get the idea of it not being engagement driven which might circumvent the algorithmic issues we've discussed before, but it still leaves the problems of a lot of people just wanting a row, or to noddingly agree with each other. It gets old one way or the other, I think. I guess, anyway.
I'm just awaiting the "Elon Musk buys Bluesky" headline, tbh.

Just go outside and show pics of your dogs to random strangers. That way you get exercise as well.
