So it seems we have had a moment of sanity in this fucked up world, in case it's not obvious I fully support the banning of transgenders partaking in 'same sex' sports in the way they have proposed (ie by age 12 I think) fuck me I'm not sure I even know how to describe the scenario. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/sport/swimming/61853450.ampI hope other sports follow suit.

I think, THINK, this thread can only go well and will be a resounding success.

Are we putting in bets yet for how long before the thread is locked? Pretty certain it is before the evening is out.
(On topic, seems pointlessly antagonistic towards transpeople and only going to continue fueling this dumb culture war.)

Oh ffs. Now we can't have an actual debate on the issue, thanks a lot.

Virtually nobody transitions by 12. It’s such a pathetic get out clause

Genuine question because I don’t fully know the ins and outs of it.
So the main objection is that someone who has gone through male puberty then transitioned male>female is on average more likely to be physically stronger than a cis woman. But now that puberty blockers are a reasonably common thing where does that leave male>female transitioned people in terms of sport because they presumably won’t have this perceived advantage?
Also, is there any conversation about female>male transitioned people wanting to compete in male sports? Obviously at the elite level its probably not got the same competitive objection but is that the only question that needs asking?
On balance, instinctively, I think transpeople should be allowed compete alongside the gender they’ve transitioned into but I’ll admit I’ve not paid a huge amount of attention to the debate because social media is very bad at it.

There's all sorts of factors. Bone density, height, muscle development that give advantages that drugs can't reverse safely.
You have to weigh up the impact on individuals vs the integrity of the events/sports.

It's not just Seb Coe though it seems pretty obvious to me, Sharon Davis has long since supported this amongst others, I don't understand the logic in not supporting it.

Because the instances are so rare in ‘elite’ sport they may as well be banning unicorns from competing.
It’s really just capitulating to and furthering the anti-trans rhetoric the media seems absolutely determined to push on us.

I’m surprised any athletes want a ban as it gives them a perfect “I would have got gold if it hadn’t been for those meddling pesky transgenders” excuse to whine about whenever they fuck up.

Should ban all tomboys/ big handed people/small eared/small breasted/large feeted swimmers as they have a natural advantage.

I think people need to read a bit more about the history of transgenders in swimming. Link us up, then. Let's have some empirical evidence to back up your position... It's cute that you seem to genuinely believe that this Conservative government is doing this because they care about the integrity of sports, though.

Yep that's the same thing.
There's a whiff of "those pesky women and their sports" to the dismissiveness of the topic.

Is there an informed debate to be had here? It's not something I will comment on from my position as a non-athlete, cis male, non medical/genetic/gender professional, no matter how much "research" I do.
Falls squarely into my "not my fucking business, but ffs why do people have to try to make other people's lives shittier" category.

I'm glad that a thread was created based around a conversation we have on a 3 month cyclical timeline that always ends the same way. Bravo user Freddie, bravo.

What, erm, does cis mean? People whose gender identity is the same as their birth gender.

What, erm, does cis mean? Cisgender. Where your identification of your gender is that of your birth.
