Ulythium Unfortunately the best advice I have for the Dark Realm is to Yokai Shift the bastard out of the first (and hopefully get a grapple out of the deal while shifted) and... beat it before it gets another, which is easier said than done to say the least... The best part about this is that you basically don't have to deal with the arms at all if you can manage it, but still. I'll throw in a "don't neglect your block button" just in case though. Obviously the grab is unblockable, but attacks like its tail swing or the homing projectiles it throws can be cancelled out entirely by blocking. And once it gets low, running the heck away and tossing a few projectiles at it (firebombs, magic, anything) might be your best bet rather than risking a bad grab again. The good news is, it should all be downhill from here if you can kick its scaly arse!

I think I'm going to try using kunai/shuriken/etc. to kill the snake arms once they become detached, as that should let me fight Yatsu during the Dark Realm phases instead of running away.
Fighting the smaller snakes with melee attacks proved inadvisable.

Well, it wasn't pretty - in fact, it was the definition of 'winning ugly' - but I got it done.
My attempts at killing the smaller snakes in the Dark Realm ended in abject failure, so I ended up waiting out those parts of the fight (and there were several).
I ran in and hit him when his snake-hands were buried in the ground; tried to Burst Counter his big attacks where possible; and otherwise dodged about the place while holding down L1 as though my life depended upon it.
Onwards and upwards!

Ulythium "ugly" doesn't detract squat, it's Nioh and it's Yatsu-no-Kami. You won, fuck the snake, congrats And if my experience was anything to go by, you shouldn't find much of anything else to be nearly as much of a roadblock... Except maybe a specific gimmick boss at some point, but it's more "annoying hard" than "difficult hard" tbh

Just so you know, Junior, your Nioh advice has definitely had an impact. Once upon a time - like, a month or so ago - I probably would've skipped the Onmyo Magic training mission that becomes available in the dojo after Yatsu-no-Kami is defeated. "Magic? Pfft! Give me a sword any day." Now, though? As soon as I saw it pop up, a little voice in my head whispered, "Sloth Talisman"... so I set aside my preconceptions, and did the mission right away.
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks, eh?

Now you're properly getting in the Nioh mindset For all the Soulslike comparisons, it plays pretty differently to them tbh. Blocking is very important, in some cases even more than dodging, but at the same time the combat is usually much more fast-paced compared to the more methodical approach in Souls, magic is required reading for pretty much every build rather than one build of many... I've seen quite a few people in the interwebs go in with the Souls mindset and find they're getting nowhere fast

Living Weapon seems overall quite a bit stronger compared to Yokai Shift, actually. Granted I am using my usual setup of Sloth/Weakness/Extraction, now enhanced by the addition of Carnage (+attack, -defence, but the debuff gets cancelled by a Steel afterwards) and Pleiades (increased Amrita gauge gain), two buffs I didn't find necessary in 2, but even so nothing in the fourth region lasted long after I activated LW and went to town... Even Okatsu got in a good combo at the start, then failed to dodge the Sloth and that's all she wrote. I pinned her in the corner and beat the curse out of her in less than a minute

I did prefer Living Weapon to Yokai Shift, I must admit.
The smart money is on you finishing 1 before I beat 2!
Sometimes I feel as though Team Ninja is trolling its players. Finish a main mission, and unlock a sub-mission that entails fighting the exact same boss you've just defeated? Thanks, guys.

No Umi-Bozu/Yatsu-no-Kami-esque boss for me to deal with (yet?)

Well, fifth region down too. Not as easy as the fourth, but that was more because Gasha-Dokuro isn't really the type of boss to just beat up (found it a bit more tedious than a similar one in 2 tbh, I did screw up and waste the foot stagger but still) and Magoichi is a bit of a zip-out-of-range cunt as usual (didn't manage to kill me, just annoying. Probably gonna skip his side mission, Yatagarasu isn't worth it right now).
Onwards and upwards to what I think is the final set of missions then!

Highlight was me getting a nifty armour smithing text... That needs Umi-Bozu eyes to craft, one for each piece out of five. Which means suffering through that mission at least five times praying for drops. Yeah, no. Overlevelled or not, that's not happening

Once you have enough levels, you can finish that Umi-Bozu mission in less than two minutes, but by then you usually have access to better equipment.

True. Not to mention in NG it isn't really worth worrying too much about builds just yet. I just found the requirement funny

Well, boys, it finally happened: I encountered my first Tengu in Nioh 2.
While making my way down a mountain path, the winged bastard appeared before me. With sweaty palms and clenched buttocks, I approached, thinking that maybe - just maybe - this time would be different.
I took a deep breath, mentally invoked the spirit of Leeroy Jenkins, then prepared to strike...
... And promptly got my shit ruined.

The Karasu Tengu is about the only enemy I never really got the hang of fighting. Such a pain, probably because of all the vertical swooping and such.

I just Sloth them every time they show up, too much of a hassle otherwise. There's quite a few other big enemies that I don't mind fighting normally, especially in 2 where there seem to be less oneshots happening, but Tengu get the VIP treatment

A(nother) stupid question: once I've unlocked the Adept-level missions in the dojo, how do I go about doing them?
I obviously met the requirements for the combat tutorial, as that was available right away; however, the magic and ninja tutorials are currently greyed out.
In the original game, I just had to respec and put enough points into the relevant skills, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

You have to get a certain amount of exp in each. You get it by just using ninja arts and spells. I unlocked magic quite quickly naturally but I did have to consciously remember to throw a few poison shurikens to bump up the numbers for ninjitsu

Ulythium another little bonus from Divination is that, because it counts as a buff, dealing damage while it's active builds Onmyo proficiency as if you had, say, an element imbuing spell active. So if you've got it active pretty much always (as you should, the thing lasts an eternity and makes ambushes and collecting stuff much easier) you'll be gaining Onmyo proficiency all throughout the game! Unfortunately Ninjutsu doesn't have anything that lasts that long to my knowledge, but buffs like the broths that let you inflict paralysis or poison with weapon attacks should count.

I think the mission 'A Way Out' may be my least-favourite part of any game I've ever played.

I think the mission 'A Way Out' may be my least-favourite part of any game I've ever played. That's the one with the searchlight bastards all over the place, right? Yeah, not a fan of it either. Alerting all the Yokai ever with a glance would be one thing, but putting you in Dark Realm on top of that? It was easier with a map, but even so it was still rough.

Bang on the money as usual, JuniorFE. I just found it completely obnoxious. Managed to get out of the second searchlight area through sheer dumb luck, but died before reaching a shrine or shortcut; now I have no idea which way to go in order to get back there, as I sprint about the place like a freshly-decapitated chicken. Ended up rage-quitting (which is pretty rare for me, despite outward appearances!).

Rant time! Fuck's sake, if the dojo mission for the Onmyo mystic arts in 2 was annoying, its predecessor is downright infuriating, and I don't seem to be the only one after some cursory searches... You're given only wooden weapons (you keep your armour) and a (pretty good actually) set of spells, to defeat a pair of the soldier statues (they one-shot you, but not too bad), an Onyudo (tongue monk, same as in 2) and a freaking NUE of all things (Onryoki in 2) in a row! No Living Weapon available either (although I didn't expect it to be)... You're even given 1 Sloth, it's still not enough! Not to mention, for some reason I can't use wooden Tonfa?? The Odachi is there just fine (also a DLC weapon in 1) and in 2 I could use my fists, so why are Tonfa excluded? Your guess is as good as mine... Joke's on the game though. I can craft a headpiece that has Onmyo Casting Speed guaranteed (a slightly lesser version of one of the buffs I would unlock from the mission) and I can still use my preferred set bonus even with it taking up a slot... So I'll just bin the mission, grab like 100 extra levels and Divine armour from NG+ or something and double back to NG to get my revenge if I feel like it

Remember to use your skills. Pick a weapon and add the fire and poison arcanas to the two fastest hitting skills to proc damage over time and then just run around in circles for a bit.

Arcana don't exist in 1 though, do they? I got through 2 a while ago, including the equivalent dojo mission, and arcana did help then, but afaik they're not an option in 1... And I would love to use more skills but the weapon I've built and learned the most (Tonfa) is straight-up unavailable for some reason (insert the "if I HAD one!!" meme here ) so although I've tried a few others Nue just doesn't seem beatable right now... Again though, it's not necessary at the moment so I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it. Thank you for the help though

Oh, sorry, I thought you were playing the second one. Yeah, I never did those missions in the first one, I dont think. I could never be arsed to grind for the unlocks if I'm thinking of the right one.
Just unlocking through casting/throwing stars was the right play.
