Tokichiro is dead... ... Or not. Do you use protection talismans? I mean the one that 100% blocks one attack from a boss? It definitely became a staple for me during the last 1/4th of the game and the dlc. Shibia Katsui main flaw from a design perspective is that his charge attack can get "stuck" leaving you dodging it for minutes. I think I killed him on my 2nd try with a axe due to my insane ki damage. Did you ever try using a axe in Nioh 2?

Tokichiro is dead... ... Or not. You're tearing through them now, good stuff! Tokichiro's fight is one of my favourites in terms of presentation. The preceding cutscene oozes determination, the soundtrack is appropriately somber rather than triumphant, and the banter he offers is also surprisingly cutting (such as him still calling you Hiddy even while you're at each other's throats, or how hurt he sounds if you use Yokai Shift while fighting him).

rajin I have to admit that using items isn't my strong suit, and most of the talismans I've deployed so far just buffed my weapon with one element or another. Weapon-wise, I've stuck to my dual swords build from the original Nioh - I like its default moveset, and some of the unlockable skills are very helpful indeed. JuniorFE Thanks! Tokichiro was one of those bosses I got painfully close to beating on my first try, then struggled for a while to finish off, so it was good to get the win eventually (even if I was up until about 01:30 in the process). While I totally agree about the cutscene and the soundtrack, I do feel that the narrative would've been better served by a voiced protagonist, like William in Nioh 1 - there was a lot of emotional heft behind that particular fight, but with only one character able to say anything, it lacked a bit of oomph in my view.

Eh, I feel like the protagonist just saying nothing, walking towards Tokichiro while not even looking at the skeletons they're killing is better served by their utter silence tbh. And given that the cutscenes were crafted with them not saying anything in mind, I can't really recall any other moments when them talking would really be necessary... Besides, while I don't think that's what Team Ninja were actually going for, Hide being completely silent and more or less only fighting sort of feeds into them and Tokichiro being the two halves of the historical Hideyoshi, by essentially playing the role of the Kagemusha (lit. shadow warrior, a body double used by important figures for protection and to confuse opponents), contrasting the more boisterous Tokichiro. Ieyasu did the same thing but more literally back in Nioh 1. And you can always headcanon that Hide got stabbed in the neck in the opening cutscene (the stab is almost directly under the camera's POV) and their vocal cords got damaged or something

I'm not a fan of silent protagonists as a general rule, to be honest. I know some people find it more immersive, and fair play to them, but I've always thought it led to some slightly silly scenarios. Like the beginning of Dishonored, for instance, when Corvo is arrested for Jessamine's assassination, and just stands there mutely - if only he'd been a voiced character, he could've been, like, "Nuh-uh, guys. I didn't do shit!"

Maybe, but would it actually have changed anything? If anything, from what little I know about Dishonored I feel like Corvo wouldn't have said anything at that point even if he weren't a silent protagonist I don't want every game to have an MC that just goes "Hm" at everything mind, I just think that silent protagonists can be done just as well as talkative protagonists on the occasion, even if they're not used as self-inserts.

He's not exactly verbose in Dishonored 2 even when they DID give him a voice (the best voice ever as it happens, given who voices him).

Hey, JuniorFE - remember when I was grousing about boss rushes in the 'Game mechanics you hate...' thread, and you mentioned that Nioh 2 has one late on? Is that in 'The High-Spirited Demon', perchance?

Is that in 'The High-Spirited Demon', perchance? I don't think so? Looking it up, there's a Kamaitachi in the first area that I'm pretty sure is optional, a mid-boss that you do have to fight and then Mezuki as a regular enemy that I'm pretty sure you can skip as well. AFAIK two out of the three aren't mandatory.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure either Nioh has what I'd classify as a boss "rush", technically, at least not in its main missions. Boss gauntlets, certainly, but you usually get a chance to rest at a shrine in between fights. It's why I was confused at, I think it was Bichii off-handedly mentioning Nioh 1's final level at some point (but didn't say anything at the time), because you can rest at the shrine between the four boss rematches, either get a shrine or can backtrack to one after Nobunaga and don't have to refight Kelley if you lose to Orochi, so technically every one of its bosses gives you a chance to regroup after

Ah, okay. (I re-fought the ferret and the pony, then got to the boss door and thought I may have missed something.)
Thanks for the clarification

Since this thread has seen a bit of a resurgence lately thanks to Ulythium and myself, this is rather timely: The Nioh Collection (physical edition only, unfortunately), including both Nioh Remastered games and all DLCs, is currently on sale for 20 bucks: direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-games/the-nioh-collection-ps5If you'd like to enjoy these two great games for a frankly insultingly low price for the amount of content therein, you've got until the 28th of this month to grab them!

Fixed that for you
Well worth buying, especially at that price.
I'm currently hunting down some information on a Yokai-slaying sword in Nioh 2.

Eh, it's "unfortunately" more in the sense that it might take a bit to arrive, not much else wrong with it

I was really enjoying the next mission, too... ... Until I reached Lady Osakabe. Sounds about right for Osakabe Unfortunately I don't have many hints here, I basically just bashed my head against her until things worked out. I was good on survivability, so she didn't actually kill me too many times, but she was annoying for sure. What I did use was Daion-Jin Sake (much like with Orochi) to defang her elemental attacks, then just bashed whatever head I could. Burst Counters give good opportunities to pile on the damage on the smaller heads, and don't forget to do as much damage as possible to the big head when it drops. I'd imagine good ranged weapons (especially cannons), Ninjutsu and/or spells would do wonders for hitting the heads (main head included I think) without having to wait for them to close in, too.

On the bright side, if you can get past her too there shouldn't be anything else in the game to give you too much pause. Especially since you're already past the "Got to fulfill our boss rush quota" stage

rajin I died all of once to her last night, before deciding to pack it in and go to bed. I'm sure I'll die far more than seven times overall before I get the job done! JuniorFE Many thanks for the tips, as always. (Even Cowboy struggled against her in his first playthrough!) I didn't mind the Daidara Bocchi fight a couple of missions ago, which also did the whole, "Massive boss and off-screen attacks" thing, but Osakabe is just obnoxious. Sort of like a rerun of the similar boss from the end of OG Nioh, whose name I can't for the life of me remember. I will admit that I quite enjoyed the boss rush part of this level, much to my amazement.

First try, boys! Unless for some reason you want to count the attempt I made last night... or the three I had this evening before I triumphed... in which case... fourth try, boys!

Shout-outs to Nick (for turning me onto Water Sword, which decimated Osakabe's health bar when she was stunned), and Junior (for the tip regarding Daion-Jin Sake, which helped nullify all the debuffs that made my first three attempts abject failures).

You wanna know the stupid part? I rewatched my video of Osakabe, after I'd made the hint post... Turns out I never used Daion-Jin Sake at all, I used all three X-Stop Talismans with Gust Talisman (blocks projectiles) as a backup... *facepalm* It's a legitimate strategy, but I could have had so many more quick item slots for stuff to pelt her with

I am so lost.
Zombie Tokichiro and the Red-Eyed Dickbag fall to my dual swords in short order, and I assume the credits will roll; however, first I have to pay a visit to Purgatory in order to speak to Mommy Dearest. She tells me to "fulfill my destiny"...
... So naturally I travel to a waterlogged basement, where I stab Ol' Red Eyes' glowing purple horn (not a euphemism, I promise) with my magic dagger/sword. This causes all manner of black goop to spray everywhere.
Tired from my exertions, I fall asleep on the floor. My waifu leaves me there, happy for me to get some well-earned rest, and apparently not at all concerned at the possibility that I'll drown in the foot or so of water in which I'm lying.
Next thing I know, I awaken to the sight of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed samurai staring at me - it's my boy William!
Instead of being a bro as expected, Billy Boy whips out his sword and tries to stick it in me (again, that's not a euphemism). Then we're fighting to the death! Except not really - when I remove two-thirds of Slick Willie's health bar, a cutscene plays.
Turns out I was possessed by the Man with the Staff - truly, the least-intimidating nickname for a villain ever - and with Will's help, he has been banished.
Then Big Willie Style shares his Guardian Spirit with me, as though we weren't just trying to murder each other with sharp implements! Then my waifu arrives, all, "Oh, you're up at last!" And I'm all, like, "Thanks for waking me - you know I had a meeting at 09:00."
Now I'm back in the dank room, having joined forces with Old Bill, and we're in pursuit of some woman of whom I've never heard (but with whom I apparently have major beef all of a sudden).
The hell is happening?

Ulythium that's the only thing I'd say is a slight dick move on the part of the storywriters: the lady you're attempting to stop now is Lady Maria (no, not the Bloodborne one, the other one)... who only appeared in Nioh 1's DLC. William knows her better than Hide does, he's had to fight her machinations for a while while Hide was trying to contain the Man With The Staff™ sealed within themself. Ironically, since you haven't played the DLC, she's to you exactly what she is to Hide: a complete unknown who you have to chase down because... William told you to (I forget if you've been told what she's actually after at this point in 2)

JuniorFEAh, okay! That makes a certain amount of sense. Kind of a dick move to bring back a DLC character in the sequel's main campaign with no explanation, as you say. No, I haven't been told who Maria is yet - all I know is that William says she needs to be stopped, and apparently I'm down with that. (I literally reached the shrine at the start of this mission, saved my game, and quit for the night.)

Well, Otakemaru was a total pain in the dick, but I eventually prevailed (albeit by the skin of my teeth). Then the credits rolled. JuniorFE Is that actually it? No epilogue mission, a la Nioh 1?
