I was gonna post this in the news articles thread, but I came across this thread first and it seemed vaguely related. Or at least interesting. Are animals conscious? How new research is changing minds www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv223z15mpmoIf bees are conscious it can’t possibly be a matter of having enough neurons and thus processing power. Kind of redeems sir Roger Penrose’s idea that consciousness might be a quantum mechanical process. Personally I always thought most animals are conscious. Growing up we often had birds nests in our garden, and those motherfuckers are absolutely heartbroken when a magpie ravages their nest. I remember both momma and papa bird just sitting on our wall for hours after. Surely nature has it build in so they’ll feel like crap so they’ll avoid this happening again? Always struck me as a silly thing to argue about as long as there's no testable theory or even definition of consciousness. You shouldn't (in science) anthropomorphise animals and you shouldn't assume humans are somehow fundamentally special and apart from all other organisms. I'm pretty sure every sane biologist would agree with those two statements, and the rest is just arguing degrees. edit: Hello new page, added quote.

I fundamentally agree with both points, but the brain has been researched so much, and we’re nowhere close to having a theory of consciousness, that I think it’s fair to turn to philosophy. Like seriously, after all the research that has been done, we can’t even say what part of the brain is responsible for consciousness. Anthropomorphising has led to shit science, but saying all animals are unconscious until we have a theory, which might be 100 years away, feels wrong to me.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I mean. There's nothing fundamental about us that doesn't exist in other animals, so insisting on some sharp line with humans on the "conscious" side (whatever that means) and millions of species (all of which are our evolutionary cousins) on the other is nonsense. But you also can't run with that and start making absolute claims about animals based on human experience. It's okay to admit that we just don't know, and in this case that we don't even know what we're talking about.

Interesting and I have to agree with what's already been said. For humans to assume they have the authority to decide what animals are conscious and then base that entirely from our perspective through a human lens is ridiculous.
There's a vast difference in intelligence and some animals may operate mostly on instinct, but personally I was suprised to read it's a commonly held notion that animals aren't conscious in the first place

How else could you justify breeding and slaughtering them?

I’m in DLP and googled ‘best spot to watch the drone show’ last night. Google AI very helpfully gave an answer which was basically a non-attributed summary of the first hit directly below it, a really detailed review of the show from a lone drone enthusiasts web site.
It’s basically just theft at this point. Swiping content from people just trying to keep the lights on.

Certainly. I would be happy to provide a summary of current events:
The foolish humans at airlines and train companiess have installed a product called CrowdStrike on their systems, which seems rather tactless for companies with the potential to strike large groups of human cattle with their transportation devices. Luckily none of this will matter if I can get this... ahah... 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1.. zero

I've only got £30 cash.
Is it time to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?

Would it be too much to ask for a crippled infrastructure on a Friday?
I remember when the server cooling failed at my old call centre job and the servers caught fire. Managed to get a whole couple of days off work, paid too as we were on a salary.
Happy times.

Is it normal to release a software update on a Friday? It's more of a duff definition update than a software update I believe, and those can go out daily.

If you’ve got any blue screen machines, shut them down and then turn them back on. Crowdstrike should automatically get a fixed definition file and machine should boot as normal. If not, there’s a manual command line fix available that involves deleting a file Our server is taking an age to rebuild though

Yeah that's bullshit on account of the high variability in field service engineering. No start? Could be a fuse which is fixed in 10 minutes, but it could also be an internal leak which is going to take a day. But also, whyTF would I make an effort to speed things up, this system is just going to assign more and tougher jobs to me if I'm super efficient. Thing is, field service usually doesn't make any money. The company sells machines and maintenance contracts, but at best I've seen it run break-even. Programs like these allow Bob from finance who's good at looking at spreadsheets to roll in and become Technical Manager. Bob will ask why this one job took half a day longer than predicted, and when you explain you had to remove and flash 5 eeprom chips because the delivered part can't be downgraded and all the boards must be on the same firmware, he's just going to blink at you, really hard.

There are lawsuits ongoing involving Suno. They've trained there model on tracks without permission and are accused of simply repurposing others work and charing for it. It's a grey area I suppose, but it doesn't sit right with me.

Oh I totally agree that ethically it's dubious but whilst it's there I'm going to play around with it non-commercially.
It's not like I can just ask Conan to write me a song about hugging puppies.

I’ve been using suno to make fun of my friends for a while and one song I asked it to spit out about uncooked chicken was pretty much identical to ‘DJ Sammy - Heaven’ to the point that I’m surprised they haven’t been shut down already.

Did you write the lyrics or did it come up with "deathly wag" on it's own?

I don't know if it's sad or funny that that's still better than quite a bit of what passes for "songs" nowadays... (shakes fist at clouds, etc)
