Much like AR stuff when they decided the best way to show it off is Minecraft, the real usage isn't consumer, it's business. This sort of thing is proving to be really invaluable in things like medical inventory and supply chain/production line stuff where you can get rid of the much of the clerical effort. We're piloting things like ICU observation and first pass imaging and it's genuinely good.

Fully agree that this has fuck all practical usage for general lifestyle though. The "where the fuck did I leave my keys" thing is nice, but as nick said, unless you want to bodycam your life 24/7 it's not going to know that.

AI can reduce a lot of admin work in business, absolutely.
Fortunately my company is very slow at implementing things due to copious amounts of red tape and risk aversion so my job is safe for a few years yet.

Because we already have cameras and mics in ours, sounds interesting.

I'm not super involved in that one but it's pretty much everything. Movement, sound, vitals, object recognition, room temp, etc etc. Practically everything that can be monitored. We already did remote person monitoring anyway with some automatic alerts, this just takes it to the next level allowing for precision detection based on symptoms and diagnoses. We're in early trials to have it in OR as well, augmenting surgery management.

The most amazing takeaway from that video is that apparently Google glasses are still an actual thing. Bless ‘em.

I guess that's where all-day wearable AR glasses will (eventually) come in.

Does anyone know when they'll be reviews of the "Snapdragon elite pcs"?
I'm not interested in the AI bullshit just performance and battery life.

Faces made of living skin make robots smile
just a quick quote The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human...
We are at the rubber skin stage...

Its not a massive shock that AI is better than humans in what is often a test of rote learning.

I bet they're fucking amazing at job interviews too, ticking off the arbitrary requirements.

Having just been involved in a hiring process at my work, I can say a LOT of covering letters are being written by ChatGPT, but you can spot them a mile off. Straight in the bin they go.
One slipped through, and in the initial interview (online) you could see he was reading prompts off a screen. His gaze kept switching and you could see the reflection in his glasses of a text file filling up. Some of his replies were OK, others showed a complete lack of understanding of why we were asking something. They didn't get a 2nd interview.

the MS free AI on windows desktop (copilot) is so shit at writing cover letters or anything else. Someone at work had the great idea of getting it to write novels and sell them on amazon. Didn't sell much at all

I think the thing that will do for AI in the end is its basic economic viability. It is catastrophically power intensive.
I had a demo on Monday from Microsofts AI department trying to sell us their Copilot bolt on for their security tools. They sell the service in blocks of computational units for like £2.5k each and something like de-obfuscating a malicious script would cost one unit of computational time. Nobody is paying for that.
It was pretty impressive, though. It could summarise a security incident into an executive summary really well but... yeah. I can do that. It just takes longer and doesn't cost 800 quid.

I'm assuming AI is going to go the Netflix/Spotify route of exponential growth by giving it away cheap. Then once it's replaced half the workers, bump up the monthly fees so companies are now paying the same as they were in wages.

The HW behind all this will rapidly mature though, so that whilst this current wave will no doubt start to drop off, there will be a follow on wave where as Bill says, ultimately companies will still be paying the same amount of money, but not have the hassle of real people, who want to leave early for a parents evening, get sick etc.

How new research is changing minds www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv223z15mpmoIf bees are conscious it can’t possibly be a matter of having enough neurons and thus processing power. Kind of redeems sir Roger Penrose’s idea that consciousness might be a quantum mechanical process. Personally I always thought most animals are conscious. Growing up we often had birds nests in our garden, and those motherfuckers are absolutely heartbroken when a magpie ravages their nest. I remember both momma and papa bird just sitting on our wall for hours after. Surely nature has it build in so they’ll feel like crap so they’ll avoid this happening again?
