Nervous for our final game tonight. Despite playing well and getting results recently it is still likely that we will fuck it all up somehow.
Ah well. Here’s to ignoring the internet until 2130 tonight

Ha! I'm off to the gym for the first half, since i don't have permier sports anymore. I will keep an eye on livescore though, then will be chewing my nails down to the quick for the second half while listening to the commentary on the wireless.

Ha! Spot the non-Scots.
Burned so many times & this could be the only way we get into any tournament these days!

I get the distinct impression you aren't taking this very seriously.

I sense the entirely-expected despair and perennial Scottish disappointment is due any minute now ... 11 min to play.

Seems we got relegated and I've no idea what that means either....

We get a play off game against some ok opposition to maybe make the next euros.
Plus we get bumped up into another league above. Playing higher ranked teams might help the pot ranking in future.
N. B. Results dependent. Not our strong point.

Dodged that bullet but we've a long way to go yet to match Scotland despite matching yiz on the the day twice. Some good young players coming through now at least. Love every finals you get to, you never know how long you'll be waiting again.

Yeah, we get promotion to the ‘A’ groups. Which means better teams to play against that can be a good thing.
We get a play off for Euro 2024 if we need it.
And we get bumped up to pot 2 for the euro draw which should be a boost we haven’t seen for many a year.

Qualifying and tournaments have a purpose though. This is just a nonsense.

That's a distinctly English perception.
For us these games are a huge improvement over the old friendlies. There's a bit of bite that you just didn't get before, as well as potential reward in the form of playoff places and promotion etc.

DougsMaybe. But it is a route to qualification, rightly or wrongly, both in terms of how it affects the draw and access to a potential play off. It's how Scotland managed to qualify for the Euros last time around. Where, lest you forget, we secured a glorious 0-0 victory!

If England can't reach a tournament through qualifying, they don't deserve to be there imo. Not relying on some backdoor to sneak bigger teams through after failure. (see also my irritation with 3rd place CL dropping into the EL).

Rome wasn't built in a day and all that. Strong Home Nations teams are a must imo.

The main problem is getting back up from being in a low pot against too many decent teams.
Plus, your mob always seem to get a decent qualifying group- some of those even we could have qualified from. I still remember one run where we had 3 teams from the last 16 of the previous world cup in ours. That was no fun.

Presumably that's down to seeding though - and perhaps something that this competition might help with.

That's it exactly the hope for the nations league for us and the other home nations, improved ranking will make groups a bit more feasible to qualify from.
I hope. It's never a guarantee with us!

I think you can see the benefits already to be honest. Instead of grinding out friendlies with Netherlands one week and then Faroe Islands the next then waiting 6 months for a 'competetive' game where we fuck it up and lose ground in qualifying, we are playing in a league format against a similar mix of teams that all technically have something to play for.
It seems to suit Scotland at the moment so of course we are keen on it. England, maybe not so much. But then you guys have qualified for every major tournament more or less for the last 40 years.
If we were getting relegated after getting pumped by everyone in the group we might not feel as positive but at the minute we have reaped the maximum rewards.
(then we go up to league A and get pumped by everyone in the group....)

It definitely suits smaller teams in terms of giving them something to fight for and compete with teams in and around their level. I actually think England stand to benefit because they are playing the big teams more often now so it won't be such a surprise that after winning every qualifier, it turns out you're shit against Italy.
