I'm going to be the arsehole and say, too bad it took being relegated for them to wake up and play some ball. Nice turnaround though, hopefully it lasts. It didn’t

Saka very close there, even more evidence that he should have started.

It didn’t I'm imagining a sitcom-style freeze frame as I posted this and Morgan Freeman going "Reader, it did not, in fact, last." in his best narrator voice...

Ffs, really wanted Pope to do well, but he had a really poor game, not just the howler at the end.

Annoying that the 3 goals were all self inflicted, but maybe we needed to go a couple of goals to snap us out of our malaise.

Saka very close there, even more evidence that he should have started. Realised in commentary that they played him at LWB last time out. Just play players I'm their best positions FFS!

Have we actually had a great goalie since David Seaman?

Have we actually had a great goalie since David Seaman? Ramsdale, Pope and Henderson, so I've heard.

Ramsdale has his flaws but I honestly think he’s the pick of the bunch.

Not sure anyone has said that, just that Pickford is a bit shit.

Its mad that you still hear the same defence of Maguire being trotted out by old pros every time he has a game like this - that he’s a great defender as long as you put him beside someone who can read the play ahead and someone with more mobility.
Surely if you can’t read the play and lack the movement to cover the ground (combined with a chronic inability to play the ball forward well) you’re not a great defender?
England seem like they’re going to be in a lot of trouble if the draw doesn’t fall in their favour in Qatar. Tonight was very undisciplined from both sides so it felt like it flattered them. I doubt it would have been 3-3 if there was anything to play for. I don’t really understand why all the parts of the team feel so detached from each other when its largely the same squad Southgate always picks and its not like its a creaky old squad in need of younger legs.

The Maguire defence force is absolutely baffling to me. Even United fans staunchly defending him.
I mean, if he even had an ounce of a likeable personality I could understand it. But......

I'm not sure any United fans here are defending him and I've certainly not heard anyone outside the forum defend him. Must be Southgate fans.

I've seen Luke Shaw defending him, but that's different, not United fans bothered about Maguire. Most would want him fired into the sun before being picked for anyone, including England.
It's odd that Southgate insists on keeping on picking him, though, when he's so obviously not up to it. Symptomatic, perhaps, of England's current state.
I have, it should be said, seen Liverpool fans crying over TAA being left out. I'd assumed he'd been injured or something, but his defensive form has been similarly poor. Odd that Maguire keeps getting picked, but he doesn't.

I'm trying to remember times when an international manager kept with their established stars/favourites instead of going with club form and it proved the right decision, with them being rewarded with unexpectedly great performances.
Not talking about marginal cases, I mean times where the player in question had been terrible for their club for a prolonged period and there were obvious alternatives playing well.
I can't think of any, but that's probably because I'm English and for much of my life underperforming in the International jersey has been the norm. Also difficult to remember good performances in an unsuccessful side. There must be some.

TAA not being picked in a wing back system is proper mad. It's just a shame that Southgate appears to have lost his bottle. He came in and picked players in form and played them in their preferred positions. That's all gone out of the window as pressure tells though.

Been a thread every day this week on Reddit about some players defending him, and the amount of posts sympathetic and defending him is fairly mad.
Obviously not nice to be one of the biggest meme players in football currently, but he doesn't help himself at all.
