the review doesn't mention specific locations like that for their argument. It's a medieval European setting akin to GoT so the argument is you can definitely have PoC in that game which I agree. It is what it is really. The review specifically calls out the Middle East / North Africa as obvious inspirations for in-game locations, in which case populating them with white characters does seem a bit off. I’m not normally a fan of Edwin’s stuff but I thought that was a pretty good review.

It'll be interesting if this is to be a common theme in regards to calling out Japanese devs for lack of representation because game journos have been traditionally loathe to apply such criticisms at times, although I do remember a very popular article criticising Persona's portrayal of homosexuality.

Same can be said about Genshin Impact, but I have not heard any of those thus far. Okay, I didn't want to bring this up myself since I didn't know if anyone else here cared about Genshin, but since you mentioned it... When it comes to non-white playable characters, Genshin has four so far (five if you squint) and they are, in release order: - A pretty good 4-star... That never appears on limited banners because he's one of the three starters, so getting him to his full potential is a pain in the ass - The worst 4-star in the game bar none - A decent 5-star who unfortunately hogs a lot of field time so his synergy with most supports is clunky (he's also the "if you squint" one) - A very niche 4-star that has basically one viable team, if that - Arguably the worst 5-star in the game (definitely among the worst) with too many issues in her kit to list here. She also happens to be one of my favourites, so, uh... Lucky me? The last three were only introduced recently, too, in the Middle East/India-inspired region. I'm not gonna draw any conclusions of my own from this but it doesn't really seem like they're going out of their way to make themselves look good on the subject... Not sure if there have been any articles on it specifically, either. The last character did make the community raise a decent stink* (more about gameplay than other issues, but I think some did complain about representation/race issues as well), but nothing really came out of it and she still sucks gameplay-wise, so... *(I should probably clarify that when I say "decent stink" I mean actual articles written about her, not just random comments in places)

I stand corrected, I only properly checked more then a year ago. Still, never saw any article complaining about representation in that game previously. I admit being rather irritated towards how often China is ignored as one the most racist countries on earth while seemingly being able to present itself as a constant victim. Then again my issues with that country go back almost a decade now and are too some extent personal (lets just say I have been on other end of their hospitality) Apologies for derailing the thread. The game arrives tommorow and I hope to give my opinion on the game proper on this forum

Game Collection kindly on target for Royal Mail delivery today so hoping to start this soon but slightly concerned about mention of forced motion blur. Hoping I can get on with that as otherwise may wait a couple of months to see if they patch in an option to disable it (last experience of default motion blur was on Plague Tale: Requiem which imo was much improved with the mb switched off)…

Skipped the demo because I wanted to go in fresh on day one. Got past the prologue, so post-flashback and title screen.
Fuck, what a start. That bit crushed me. Gonna play some mindless shoot em up before I go to bed.

Calling out Japanese media creators for a lack of representation can only be a good thing imho. At least I heard there's a girl in it this time TBH I think it's just not something most Japanese devs even think of, but they want to access global markets so they'll probably respond to it if it's brought to their attention. (ie: the afforementioned female character after the last one was all white dudes) Even moreso than the way most devs in the west are white dudes, most devs in Japan are japanese dudes. (who are portrayed as white in most anime-inspired media). As such they have a very limited viewpoint, unless it's pointed out to them. Was watching this on the train on the way home from work yesterday: japantoday.com/category/politics/japan-falls-to-record-low-125th-in-global-gender-gap-ranking

I think we are being too harsh on the developers. After all, Barret - that angry, raging inarticulate terrorist - was black. I pity the fool who doesn't notice that. Oh, and Wakka, that dumb-fuck religious bigot sportsman. He was some sort of Polynesian type, brudda.

A very buxom girl who wiped your windows when you went for petrol...
I remember a coworker in Japan casually explaining to me that there was a hierarchy of foreigners, with white people at the top, black people at the bottom and everyone else somewhere in between. Maybe things have changed in the last 20 years but it's Japan so...

Also, if "marginalised" people really want to put across their point of view, there's nothing stopping them from going out there and creating their own games - especially with tools like Game Maker / Unity / Godot readily available. Nintendo are a Japanese company. They created their popular mascot in the form of an Italian plumber. I don't see many Japanese, English and American people complaining about how they can't identify with a person who is Italian, and whose job it is to go down sewage pipes every day. Also, Sonic is a hedgehog. A BLUE hedgehog at that. How many people are going to complain about Sonic not being representative of hedgehogs, or even being representative of themselves? Maybe someone should write to Sega about how a blue hedgehog isn't representative of hedgehogs, and how hedgehogs will find it offensive to be portrayed blue. Hedgehogs also can't run fast, so therefore Sega aren't again being representative of all hedgehogs.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is waiting on my doormat at home EG have the joint harshest review on the internet, according to metacritic. Even though this has near universal acclaim I always judge FF games for myself. I hated XIII at the time but that had some absolutely glowing reviews, and I love XV despite all its flaws.

To maybe provide a bit of a counterpoint, we're talking about the same franchise that had the dwarves in FF4, hyper-competent mechanics that actually fucking did something against Golbez's army and, as shown/implied with their princess, Luca, in FF4: The After Years, are black (unless it's just the royal family, somehow, but I doubt that). Not to mention the viera in the Ivalice games (FF12 and Tactics Advance/A2) who, while definitely fanservice-y in terms of design, are also portrayed as powerful mystics and are capable of performing well as archers and physical fighters as well as being very strong mages. Fran in FF12 might actually be more competent than Balthier when it comes to being a sky pirate and the Summoner/Red Mage build can be one of the most broken setups in Tactics A2, for instance. Then there's ace pilot Sazh in FF13, with plenty of comic relief moments but also a decent fatherhood storyline... And probably a good few characters that I'm forgetting, especially in the MMO games that I haven't played... Point being, while there definitely are representation issues both in Final Fantasy and videogames in general, Final Fantasy is one of the franchises that can actually pull it off decently well, at least in retrospect.

Having seen bits and bobs of this, it looks quite fun. I thoroughly enjoyed Elden Ring on PS5 and the performance didn't bother me at all in the 60fps mode - sure, I saw the drops constantly but they weren't jarring to me.
I cannot stand 30fps gaming anymore having been used to 60 since PS5 launch - refuse to play any game in Quality as fluidity means more to me. However, Lego Star Wars in performance mode gave me a headache with how blurry it got at times.
Those who have played this in performance mode, is it really bad? Like unplayable bad? Especially those who had no issues with Elden Ring in performance mode. Reluctant in trying the demo for fears of spoilers.

It’s not unplayable at all, but definitely seems to be getting a free pass compared to others games, as it does slow down quite frequently.

Cheers Junior. I think it's fair to say your knowledge of the franchise far, far exceeds mine (and thanks for the summary, it's appreciated). I was being a little flippant and trollish truth be told. I should also say it's no coincidence I cited VII and X as they are two of my favourite gaming experiences of all time, despite my comments.

Honestly this is better at 30 the frame rate is all over the place in performance mode.
That's coming from someone that hates 30fps as well.

I’m playing in quality mode and it feels great overall. It did chug like crazy during the big Eikon fight at the end of the chapter, though. Felt like how fights would tank on PS1 when you summoned the GFs in FFVII and VIII. 🥹

I would use quality mode but the amount motion blur used is headache inducing.
Anyone figured out if you can turn off the horrible auto-sprint?

They have already said it's being patched I believe just not in the launch patch Good to know so thank you. I will wait a few weeks then to see if they patch in motion blur options sooner rather than later. With a little luck they might further optimise the graphical performance a little too but that is sounding like it could be further down the line if much at all (not a deal breaker given it’s an rpg but being an arpg then would be nice if they can further smooth things out especially the Performance mode…) if anyone has any opinions of the motion blur effect (good or bad) would be interesting to hear them!

It's just standard motion blur, not the worst you will ever see but it's never a good feature.
