Combat is nothing like the other games, story wise, where it's medieval it feels more like a game of thrones tribute.
I am usually not into FF at all and this really grabbed me and I can't wait to get more time with it.
Worth a look at the demo if you have the means

Definitely download the demo, this is the first Final Fantasy I've bothered buying after playing a demo.

Dunno how much stock to put into Famitsu these days but it got a 39/40.
Also, maybe it's me, but Ive seen discussion of the game elsewhere and I think the dumbest thing you can do with your time is predict the final metacritic score of a game. "I believe it will get an 89 but not a 90". The fuck are you doing?

2 hours 40 mins until reviews drop, not that it's going to matter much. Last hype boost before tomorrow though!

The threads on the place Tuffty mentioned are always hilarious, utterly, utterly pointless. Someone taking a stab at whether something may review well is one thing predicting a fucking Metacritic score is pathetic.

Interesting. EG were not fully enamoured with this, 3/5.
Also the review does add upon the lack of PoC in the game which is fair, BUT it couches it as the deletion of PoC being a "sinister" choice, I think that's a bit much really.

I read the byline and thought “oh, it’s Frog’s favorite editor…”

Even browsing through some of the reviews on Metacritic, it sounds a little mixed. Lots of praise for the combat system and story, but dull fetch quests aplenty, nothing to spend all your Gil on, rubbish crafting system and quite a bit of padding with backtracking and whatnot.
I'm kinda interested in a FF game for the first time since FFX, so if you can basically just plough on with a decent 50 hour campaign, I'd be OK with that. I remember getting to the final boss in FF7 after 40 hours and I was so under-levelled I couldn't beat it. Plus I couldn't be fucked to grind to improve my level, so I just left it there...

Ha, never realised EG had moved away from their silly no review scores thing.

My heart sank when I saw that Edwin had reviewed this. I knew before even looking at the score that it would differ from the consesus.
Oh well, I picked it up for £26, so I cannot complain. Looking forward to it after I have finished Jedi Survivor.

The sidequests being filler doesn't bother me so much if the combat is like what we've played. Gimme a combat scenario I can flex with to style on enemies and I'm golden. It has DMC/Dragons Dogma combat with a Soken OST so even collecting bear asses is going to likely feel epic. Sounds like you won't miss much if you skip them anyway so if that cuts down on playtime for others to focus on the main story in a more reasonable time frame then that's good too.
EG doubling down on the lack of PoC is a bit tired. If it was something like PoC being included in the game and being mistreated or killed for that reason then fair enough, criticise away. But come on, not everything is sinister as they claim. Sort your own house out first before casting stones at others.

I think its immersion breaking and a misrepresentation. But EG really is dead set now on full representation in every game.

The other half of the review, I suppose -
I did get an "oh, no" from seeing Edwin's name. Baffling choice. He marks Zelda down for too much crafting, then knocks 16 for a lackluster crafting system. I know, I know, subjective opinions, humans are not rational or consistent animals, but at least I got a decent eye-roll out of that.

More on topic. Genuine question, any people here miffed about the lack of diversity? I'm assuming that no-one is seriously considering a boycott (?) but I wouldn't mind a perspective on how it makes real people feel Straight, white and male, so don't really suffer from issues of representation and, if I'm being honest with myself, it likely would have gone unnoticed for me (having said that, I did notice the large amount of sausage at this year's Summer Game Fest, so maybe I would hav). However, I thought their response was the usual "representing medieval Europe" bollocks, both being factually nonsense and irrelevant for the fantasy world they are creating. It annoyed me more than if they hadn't have commented. It really isn't that hard to have a few PoC mixed in to your game and the completely absence is a problem. Having said that, it's a culturally wide issue and not one that you can point the finger entirely at the FFXVI devs. Edit: how the fuck does seeing a black person break your immersion in a fantasy game?

I agree in regards to this particular game. I dont understand why both here and on EG people respond hawkish to my comments. I simply dont like the idea that representation can never be up to the developers and should henceforth always be enforced. Not sure if the edit was meant towards me since I meant the exclusion of arabic/middle eastern IS immersion breaking. They are "too white" for their aesthestics to make sense.

But if you say representation should be up to developers than you are saying they should be able to make a conscious decision to not include PoC. What reason do you think they would have to decide to not include any? Because I can't think of any good reason to not feature characters of multiple ethnicities in a game with 100s of character modals.
Edit: sorry I missed your edit at first. You think the exclusion of different ethnicities is immersion breaking and a misrepresentation? In that case, I agree completely. For a second I thought you were espousing the myth that there were no PoC in medieval Europe.

I think your edit after has more information, so I was only responding to what you wrote which made it seem like it was immersion breaking having PoC in a game. Yes the it's developer's desire and prerogative to do whatever they want and that includes having no brown people but it's also fine for people to question that, even if it's a Japanese company, a Japanese company that deliberately made this FF to cater to a Western audience.

I understand people assume these days I side with that kind of wrong/unfortunate reasoning of the alt/far right based on my comments being quickly scanned. Thats why I said people are being hawkish. I believe depending on the setting, a developer should be allowed to make a full white movie/video game yes. In this game its obviously a mistake they unfortunately doubled down on. I do not think its "the purposefull erasure" of people of colour in EG's words. Its a purposefull awkward/mispresentation unfitting of its setting. I would have for example, prefered to see Titan either black nubian or middle eastern.

Well, don't firaga me, but the EG review is the best one I've read so far. Detailed, informative and critical in the right ways. And I find the the points he makes about representation hard to argue with - not that I want to. They seem pretty well supported in context.
I think folk are getting a bit silly about EG at times, to be honest.

Surely if you're using a culture or location and leave the people out, you are choosing to remove them from it. I don't see the comment about deleting them to be far off the mark

It's a medieval European setting akin to GoT so the argument is you can definitely have PoC in that game which I agree. It is what it is really.
