Yeah for me the main problem with the side quests wasn’t the volume of them or even the task they gave to you, it was the unbelievable amount of cutscenes involved. They could definitely have edited some of them down.

Started this today and it's a bit bloody good so far! Combat just feels so polished, even though that change was the part putting me off getting it at first.
Plus it's endlessly amusing having characters called Clive and Rodney in a fantasy setting...

I finished the main story last night. I have mixed feelings. The initial opening 2 hours (as per the demo) were definitely the highlight for me. Intrigue, backstabbing etc, it was great. Unfortunately the game couldn't keep this up throughout. I mostly enjoyed this up to the end 25% from when it lost its way a bit. I still enjoyed the main missions, but I absolutely hated the side quests. Leading up to the end game, there were so many side quests to complete. Last night I ended up spending about 2 hours on side quests, 90% of that time was watching cutscenes, I just became really dis-interested that I started browsing on my tablet while listening in the background. In the end I ditched the remaining side quests (about 3 or 4) and just went straight into the final mission. 1st half of the game I would give a 10/10. 2nd half of the game I would give a 7/10. Side quests really drag the game down and gets a 4/10. Overall its probably an 8/10 from me, but if I ever replay it then I will just stick to the main missions and have a blast. I’m about 75% in and I’m finding the game takes a massive nose dive after the Kupka stuff. I’m currently post Dion stuff (I hope those two aren’t too spoilery) and it’s just.. well excruciating to get through at the moment. Really got into it but it’s just sending me around on inane quests. Story is wilting a little bit too - could be to do with the pacing, still looking forward to see how it plays out though.

I would say it ends strong.
By the way I had no idea that Jenny from This Time with Alan Partridge was the voice of Jill.
I think regarding the side quests complaints this will maybe lend itself better to repeat playthroughs when you’re not so desperate to find out what happens and it feels like there is less friction. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve like a FF more the second time

By the way richyroo, some of those final side quests are amongst the best in the game for story. I get why you’d start skipping them, but depending on which ones you skipped you may have missed out on the highlights

I get why you’d start skipping them, but depending on which ones you skipped you may have missed out on the highlights They may be great for story, but there was hardly any gameplay. I think if you have spent 2 hours running around, watching cutscenes and only actually played for about 5 minutes, then the game isn't designed very well. I hate to think how much longer I could have been doing them for. I may well have missed out, there were only about 4 sidequests left and i might go back and do them this weekend. But it was either that or just give up on the game entirely. However, I was too invested in the main story and wanted to see it to conclusion.

The sidequests aren't anything special from a gameplay standpoint. There are a few proper bosses hidden in there mind you. But from a story standpoint they are by far and away the best ones in the series. They give very good closure to multiple character arcs in the hideaway and beyond.
I think they are getting a bit of a bad rep because there isn't an 'endgame' chase in this one so they are being looked upon under the lens of being a replacement for superbosses and ultimate weapons. But they are purely narrative subplots that add to the world lore, really.

I did the Bahamut boss fight earlier. I cannot believe this game keeps topping itself in terms of boss fights. It's even got me so emotionally invested in the outcome for the story which nust elevates it further. Every single eikon encounter so far is better than the last, it's insane.

Theyve announced that two paid dlc's are in development for 16 as well as confirmation of a pc version. No dates for either of those, but a free update dropped today as well with a couple of fixes, but 2 of the more notable ones are that you can glamour Clives sword so you can give it any appearance and there are alternative outfits for Clive, Jill and others. Still playing the game but if I were yo hazard a guess, I'd imagine one of the DLC's is about Leviathan

Christ, how bad did sales drop off to cause a 30% share slump and be called a “disaster” after selling three million in one week

Square Enix and massively over estimating sales figures of its games. Name a more iconic duo.
There’s some really “clever” wording here stating that they lost the value after XVI came out, implying that it was the sole or major cause simply due to the sequence of events, when it seems that the mobile division is a big reason for the slump.

You're right, it's more that FFXVI failed to make up for a string of flops. The headline is definitely designed to make you think that FFXVI caused it Bloody Wes

No profit from Outriders, loses $200m on MARVEL games multiple mobile flops like FF7 First Soldier, Forspoken doesn't make back investment, Babylon's Fall bought by 3 people*
Games media: Well clearly its all FF16's fault that Square lost £2bn
For as many good games that come out from Square that I enjoy like FF16, FF7R, Triangle Strategy etc, they do like shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly.

Think that at this point Sony could probably do with giving them a hand and snapping them up.

Finished it, this game sure has some really high moments. The story really has some impressive emotional beats but is at the same time all over the place due to the time skips. I will remember the game much more then 13 and probably 12.
So for me its a return to form. I still can't finish FFX15 with its atrocious combat.
It does have some baffling decisions, such as a lack of fast travel around the hideout. It dis not bother me for the most part except when you have to visit Mid or go to the Botany.

Squenix for me are the Netflix of game studios. Knock sh*t out left right and centre. Mostly average nonsense with a few decent ones thrown into the mix. Then look bemused when everyone buggers off for the most part and just comes back occasionally for the odd decent release.
It’s a shame cause they do try but bless ‘em they won’t be making any money soon unless they can really dial it back down, refocus and start knocking it back out the park…

Completed this last night after 110 hrs. Every side quest cleared, every curiosity collected, every mark hunted, S ranked all Arcade and Final Chronolith challenges. I think I'll write a review at some point in the Completed Games thread but in short, it's my GOTY. I have criticisms of it, both in gameplay and story but in true form of the character action genre, the peaks are peaks and the valleys are valleys. In spite of all these criticisms, I personally don't think it stops it from being a GOTY, there's so many moments, scripted or otherwise through player expression in the combat, that elevated the game to elicit genuine excitement and tears out of me more times than any other game I've played this year. But I know for some people that it's their worst FF game, to me it's one of the best and with such difference in opinion, in the end, does that not make it a true FF game?
I'm tempted to go back and replay in Final Fantasy mode to see what's new, but now wondering if maybe I should hold off until both bits of DLC comes out and allow me the hard drive space to play Spiderman.

Funnily enough I think it's clear this time they made a conscious effort to go for more Witcher-style mass appeal, which ironically has made some FF fans turn their nose up

For sure, I also think it exists in a weird space right now where it's a PS exclusive and that then causes the MS fanboys to drive up criticism of it and general negative perception. But if someone were to say they didn't like it I'd understand it, there's a lot of elements that you would imagine a FF game to have which it doesn't. Meanwhile I'm here thinking if they want to take the same approach with XVII and make it another character action game, I'm completley all in.

Do you think the irony of their character names in this game completely passed the development team’s attention due to lack of cultural references? Or do you think they are well aware and went all in for the lols?
I’m not complaining… Frankly it’s one of the highlights. To be Frank about it.

Given the outsized influence of the localisation team on the game I can pretty much guarantee it is on purpose.

Finished the first bit of DLC Echoes of the Fallen. Took about 3 hrs? The first hour could have been cut down a bit but the dungeon you fight through might be one of the best ones in the game. 3 pretty cool sub bosses and the final one is one of the most difficult and has one of the best tracks. I'm somewhat at a loss however, the quest can only be done right before you do the final mission and there are new weapons, accessories and orchestrion rolls too. The accessories bust the combat even further. Displaying when to parry, auto trigger limit break if you're about to die, increased aerial damage, even something absurd like break the damage multiplier you can get up to from 1.5x to 2x and more. But I'm already some ways in on FF mode playthrough, I think I'm gonna have to restart, clear the game again on that save file and start a new FF playthrough to keep hold of everything otherwise I won't get it again right til the end at which point there won't be anything else in the game to test it out with. Might just wait til the Leviathan DLC is done and start then so I can have a full playthrough using everything...but I was enjoying it so far! Ah well, don't have to wait that long I think

Yeah, it was a decent dungeon. The final boss music is a version of the music from FF14 for the same enemy, so I wonder if they are trying to setup a recurring series theme for them like they have done with Gilgamesh.
Looking forward to the Leviathan DLC. From the brief bit we saw in the trailer, it looks like there's another full Eikon v Eikon fight, and those were a massive highlight of the base game.

I've played two hours, and I'm very impressed. I'm hoping the story stays engaging, as it feels like it's going to be pretty cut scene heavy. As long as it doesn't go down FF15 with those long boring corridor sections..
