16hrs completion time would be a bit long for a an interactive movie. Also, I'm amazed that linearity is seen as a con these days.

Yeah I'm happy for that rather than games adding open world stuff just because.

Indeed. Linearity is a plus in my book these days if I'm being honest. Actually, how is that even a surprise? Dead Space was linear. So was Dead Space 2. Dead Space 3 had some side missions but apart from that, that was also linear.
Were people expecting some kind of semi open world or what? There was no indication it was going to be anything but linear.

Dead Space did involve some exploration, opening up previously closed off areas etc and then back-tracking / revisiting previous areas. Maybe they mean you’re just being funnelled on down a pathway without any deviation? I dunno.
Either way, it better not be like 1886. That was crap.

I for one was really looking forward to farming materials to upgrade my base in the central hub and doing various other utterly pointless activities from semi open world games.
Absolutely love a linear game when they rarely appear, and that's a perfect length for me too (ooer!). Ass temps cranking!

To a point, but you could never go back between levels in the first Dead Space as it was a level based game. The remake or remaining allows you to go back and forth now.

So "you're out" because one guy on Reddit said it's like an interactive movie despite it being clearly nonsense going from every video that's been released?

Also, erm, I quite like The Order The Order 1886 was great! Really don't understand the vitriol for it. It was steampunk Gears of War with werewolves. It had all the Sony cinematic storytelling and climbing gamers love. And it was the first thing that really made the PS4 stand out from the PS3. Sad it did so poorly because I did want to see the story continued.

The devs and marketing team earn extra brownie points for showing hardly any story or even weapons & enemies.
So important to keep that sense of discovery in a linear games like this. Showing off some fully upgraded mid game weapon might have even helped the devs, so I'm impressed they've held back to let the players discover it for themselves.

So it's a short, linear, interactive movie (with barely any interactivity); its narrative isn't worth a damn; it has non-existent enemies, zero weapons, abysmal graphics, and a distinct lack of Ubisoft-esque open-world awesomeness; and to cap it off, every time you boot up this sorry excuse for a game, your penis shrinks by a centimetre. Have I got that right?

I just got home with The Callisto Protocol and have it installing on PS5. Big concern right out of the gate though, I noticed it comes in packaging VERY similar (exact) to the packet you get Blu-Ray MOVIES in. Coincidence?
Going to make a coffee then walk my cat before checking further.

Real Talk: so far the opening of the game is unskippable cutscenes, which I’m having to watch again because you can’t trust the autosave.
To switch between performance mode, you have to exit the game. Do NOT trust the game when it says it checkpointed 45 seconds ago. I’m guessing it doesn’t count the 5-10 minutes of cut scene you just say through. Do a hard save when you exit the game.

I see ACG has said he isn't enjoying it as much as he hoped he would, still flipping between buy and wait for a sale so it's fairly decent. Said the atmosphere is amazing but the combat isn't great and there is loads of jank.

Reviews are a bit shit eh. Shame about the enemy variety. I'll probably still get it once I've rinsed GOW for all it's worth.

Patches could well improve it down the line, I will wait and see. It's a good example for the don't preorder games thing though, I think my only preorders this year were elden ring and god of war which were safe bets (and elden ring was stupidly cheap at the time).

I never really understood people's demands for a 30+ hr survival horror game. It's one of those genres where you gotta get the pacing just right and at some point even a few hrs in you've seen all the games tricks at scaring you. Can't imagine stretching that out over a longer period.

Couldn’t sleep because of this stinking cold so ended up just getting up and starting this when it unlocked. Sunk two hours in and, in all honesty, if it carries on like this then I think it’s everything I want it to be. I’ll caveat this next comment by saying I am very easily pleased, and most of my favourite games haven’t reviewed amazingly well but… I bloody love it so far.

Blimey... An avoid on eurogamer citing the lack of actual gameplay.
Not sure how they managed to hide that this is just a poor interactive movie for so long.

My copy got dispatched but was upgraded free to courier delivery. Unfortunately today is the one day I am not working from home and the courier email insisted on a signature. So no Dead Space, er I mean Callisto Protocol until Monday for me. Never mind, still have Plague Tale: Requiem to finish.

Didn’t actually expect a recommended from EG. I’m quite surprised.
Anyway I’ve already had my arm ripped off, the top half of my head pulled off and been bludgeoned to death. The combat is great fun.

Can't imagine stretching that out over a longer period. All of the recent Resident Evils are 10-15 hours on first play through with trophies for getting that down to 2-3 if you’re blitzing it and they’re all brilliant. Its a shame that the review embargo red flag seems to be justified from what others are saying about this game. It looked like a cool successor to Dead Space while we wait for Dead Space

Yeh. That's a turn up. I'm optimistic now although EG reviews can be all over the place.

10-15 hrs is a fine length, but I'm talking about people wanting double that length in order to justify the RRP.
