I noticed as well, while editing the Inquisitor's appearance, I could hear strains of the music from the dark future Redcliffe Castle from Inquisition. Which was nice.
Have had the occasional crash to desktop, seems to be a DirectX related issue.

Just gonna say, on the Series X in performance mode and VRR tv, its one of the most visually pleasing games I have ever played. The environments are absolutely stunning. It is all silky smooth as well, not a single stutter in 3.5hrs of play. I can only imagine what it looks like on a high end PC.
Oh, the music deserves some credit too, it is incredible.

Bit of a weird question, but for those currently playing: how responsive does the dodge feel in combat? I'm watching some live footage now, and it looks pretty good; however, I'm coming off the back of Silent Hill 2 and also playing Alan Wake 2 atm, which are excellent games, but the dodge in both suuuuuuucks.
Hoping this one feels snappy. Also not too fussed if it's cheesy and trivializes combat.

Dgzter The dodge feels good and snappy. One of the bosses very much required it and I was leaping out of the way at the last minute. Its a proper dodge and roll which gets you out of the way, unlike Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 which is more of a duck and weave.

This is really bloody enjoyable so far. I've played, liked but never loved the other DA games. This one just has that pick-up-and-play quality; the combat to me is as moreish as crack is to Super Hans. So: great combat, looks gorgeous, moves at a clip, feels strangely soothing to play and interact with (probably as I'm coming from Silent Hill).
I can see why fans of the series might be put out, as it feels and plays very differently. And the dialogue is clunky as hell at times (it's not that bad though, ffs). Some of the voice acting is a bit suspect. Dialogue choices don't feel particularly meaningful (yet). It's linear and streamlined, meaning exploration so far is a case of stepping two metres off the main path to find a bag of gold or valuable item.
I'm only about 3 hours in. So some of the above may turn out to be bullshit, but they are my first, very positive, impressions.

In fact, I've found myself not using my shield much, apart from throwing it at mobs...and the doing a follow-up strong attack (a skill-tree upgrade). I've just acquired an explosive shield too, can't wait to give that a go.

Double dodge (quick timed presses) does a little phase thing for the mage. I assume it has an effect on the otehr classes also.

I mean, I've obviously just bought it on a whim because the review mentioned an elvish forest and I love elvish forests, me. What's the rest of the game like though?

Overall reception has been pretty positive, in the main. Best BioWare game since Inquisition... which seems like damning with faint praise, but Veilguard still seems like a return to form, even if the bar was a tad on the low side.
Hope you enjoy it! Keep us posted.

Cool, thanks, and yes, I've seen some mixed opinions but I've put that mostly down to Internet spacktards as I'm sure it'll be up my street

It's embarassing. I wasn't going to buy the game but with all these idiots moaning I'm slightly tempted to. Not quite at the point of wanting to buy it yet, but yeah. I'd probably just have forgotten about this for now and picked it up for cheap at some point - now I'm interested in y'all's experiences with it and might end up grabbing it anyway.

I'm glad this is off to such a strong start sales-wise, even though it seems like a waste of a perfectly good 'Dragon Age: The Fail Hard' headline.

It's at odds with itself a bit. Has all this great lore and background and the main story is compelling enough but the dialogue really lets it down in places, its almost comical. Morrigan turns up at one point and she just reminded me of the Limmy Falconhoof sketches.
It's gorgeous to look at but they are very much game levels with glowing chests not environments to explore. Kind of feel like I'm doing instance after instance in a luxury MMO. There's little RPG immersion but I love the combat, nuking giant health bars with the team moves is fun and now I know the rules of the game I'm enjoying myself a lot.
It's a good game, could be a lot better.

At times the HDR on Deck is actually hurting my eyes, I've got green lightning bolts seared into my retinas.

Metacritic user scores looking about as expected so far. Lots of 0s and 1s and 9s and 10s with only a few more reasonable people with something middling.
Edit: People had already started posting their reviews on Steam as well, even though most of them barely had any playtime on it. Mixed at first, but now it sits at Mostly Positive. Playtime for a lot of them is still more on the short side. Some with 15-20 hours. Though of course it's already around 7000 reviews, so I didn't exactly look at a lot of them.

This is where I am at. £30 and I’m in. With Christmas coming up I have no doubt it’ll hit that.

Got to a point where this has really opened up with side quest, factions quests and companion quests, and it is constantly improving as it goes.
The writing can be a bit JRPG “power of friendship” at times, but it’s not as prominent as I feared. I was still able to leave someone to be killed early on, so it fits.
The combat is great. Easily my favourite mage combat in anything. The way new stuff keeps opening up, rather than abilities just getting stronger is cool.
I like most of the characters so far and am still looking forward to getting stuck in to see where it goes.
I like it.
P.S. I also completely managed to miss the Create-Your-Inquistor section at the start, but I can’t be bothered starting again. I can’t really remember what he looked like or what happened in Inquisition anyway, so let’s see what pops up!

I just went on a couple of reviews which lauded it. I'm not sure what's going on with the online comments from people.
Is it not just because the middle games of dragon age were poor and this one is back to form?

It's a load of culture war bullshit, propagated by outrage-baiting incel grifters - best ignored, in other words.
"Go woke, get shitloads of sales and critical acclaim" doesn't have quite the same ring, does it, you basement-dwelling manbabies? Bwahahaha! Get fucked, idiots.

I think there’s a lot of wailing from people still stuck on Origins being “proper” Dragon Age too, when it hasn’t been that since that first game.
In structure and gameplay terms, this is very much Mass Effect 2: Dragon Age. I even have an aquarium in my office.

But yeah, the main noise is from the “no politiks in muh vidya gamez” culture war mob.

There's definitely an element of [opposition from DA purists] as well, although the culture war stuff is more prevalent (or at least, it's louder).
EDIT: Beaten to the punch again

Right, so it's back to my previous reasoning that they're all internet spacktards again then. Got it. Glad I was born when I was tbh.

Very much agree with this (well, I can't comment on mage abilities, but my warrior is really doing it for me, and it's not a role I normally choose). I'm nine hours in and it's opening up in all the right ways - quest choices, story, companions, skill tree, combat options. It's really got its hooks in me.

The more I play of this the more it feels like a fantasy version of Mass Effect. It's basically the same template with the skills upgrade trees, power wheel, detonations (biotic detonations), missions structure, level design.
Combat is stellar as well, feals really good. I am totally down with this, its the most fun I have had with a videogame for some time.
Also, I have lost a lot of respect for some youtubers and how they have treated the game. People like skillup who for 45mins just tore into the game and couldn't find a single positive thing to say. How about reviewing the game on its own merits rather than by comparing it to the expectations you had of it. Totally sus review, makes me wonder if he was afraid to go against the youtube flow of hate thus incurring the wrath of his followers. Perhaps he did it for the clicks and money., who the fuck knows.

Or you know, he reviewed the game...and didn't like it. Not everything is a conspiracy.
At the same time that kind of nonsense talk is the exact sort of tripe being pushed by people talking about the positive reviews.
