...but not Daikatana levels of pish tho'... I really want to play that. Not even kidding. Yeah, I constantly look at it in the Steam app and think about buying it. Only thing that really stops me is that I’m sure it being so old, there’s some dumb workaround to get it to work on a modern PC, and I can’t be bothered with that shit. |

Immersive sim is such a stupid name for a genre. I cringe whenever I see it used. There’s nothing more immersive or more of a simulation in them than any other game, especially since they usually give you some ridiculous powers. They’re shooters. In the case of Deus Ex, it’s an RPG, that’s also a shooter hybrid. In the case of Bioshock and Prey, they’re shooters with horror elements. They are not simulations.
It’s a dumb name.

It is. I've always taken it to mean there's a greater emphasis on interacting with the world, rather that it merely being a backdrop. So you're more immersed in the world/role. You have more agency than say Doom or Halo. But I just see them as FPS/RPG hybids

Fallout and Elder Scrolls are more immersive and interactive, but people specifically categorize those as RPGs.
I mean hell, Shenmue had you looking through every item in a cupboard and inspecting them. Pull out the Sega Saturn and play some old Master System games, which is anachronistic but whatever.
When I play Bioshock, I’m spending my time electrocuting enemies, or shooting birds at them. oh but I clicked play on a tape recorder, SIMULATION.

It’s a Metroid.
It’s 3D and first person, but game design-wise, it plays like the 2D entries. Same mix of platforming, finding hidden paths, getting power ups, etc.
